Too right I lived right next to Maine Road in my first year, it was built in such a lovable part of town

Steven Posted 7 September 2005 Posted 7 September 2005 It's more than 70 odd miles I tell thee! According to Michelin it is 142 Kms. or 88 miles by the shortest route.
Shum Posted 7 September 2005 Posted 7 September 2005 103 miles from my house to the City Centre of Manchester!
Hitesh Posted 7 September 2005 Posted 7 September 2005 Get a job the lot of yas! why? we could have an even better job after uni!!
rossporterlc Posted 9 September 2005 Posted 9 September 2005 gotta get my bloody personal statement done by 15th oct, any advice?
Matt Posted 9 September 2005 Posted 9 September 2005 why? we could have an even better job after uni!! Prehaps a easier job, but whats better finacially better or easier? Do an apprenticeship - Work as you learn, do a trade, and in years to come trades are where the money will be, not in teaching, law, computers, pshycology (Which seem to be the big uni course's alot of people are going for) in a few years when occupations such as teaching, law, computers(Although there is alot of aspects of occupations with comupters) are very over populated, your course and your results/qualifications won't mean alot, people who go to uni will be in debt (Its happening now and the debt is only gonna get worse I think) and you won't be able to get jobs in those kind of occupations, i'm not saying this will happen to everyone who goes to uni because there are plenty of different course's, e.t.c, so not everyone who goes to uni will be in an occupation that will be overpopulated but everyone that goes to uni seems to be doing course such as I have listed teaching, law, accountancy, computer work, e.t.c. Finally apprenticeship are on the up for the first time in years, why is this? because the government is finally making apprenticeship more well known again, for the first time in ages I have seen a City and Guilds advert (Apart from the current City and Guilds advert I can't say I have ever seen one before) Trades are now becoming popular again, people have realised there is money (VERY good money) in trades and the wages are only gonna get better because when all these people have finished uni and they are in debt e.t.c and there are hardly any tradesmen about and then your roof falls through or your plumbing goes wrong, "oh no there's such a shortage of tradesmen" [look in the yellow pages - pick the correct tradesmen you need] "Can you give me a quote on [enter the thing you need fixing] because [such and such has happened]" tradesmen will be booked up and not only will you not be able to get a tradesmen, when you finally get someone to fix the problem they will be charge stupid amounts of money. I can't see into the future I am not phsycic but this is truely what I think will happen, Its the only way I can see things going because although apprenticeship are becoming popular again there still ain't enough people doing them, and trades are going downhill and fast, there are currently to many of the subject I have mention being studied at the moment so in years to come these subjects and occupation are surely gonna be overpopulated its the only thing that can happen. Another thing is if you do a trade you will NEVER be out of work, especially the way things are going because the company I am currently working for is threating redundancies if not closing the whole buisness but I will and could get a job fairly easy because everyone want and everyone NEED these jobs done, but when your training its not so easy because companies only want experienced tradesmen, So its hard to break into these kind of jobs but once your trained and once your fairly experienced your laffin' Next year I will be 19, if I am still working at the same company next year (Providing the company survives redundancies ) they have promised I will be going straight upto £8 per hour thats £72 a day/£360 per week/(About)£1440 per month/£17280 a year now for a 19 year old i'd say thats pretty good. A tradesmen at the top of there game could be earning between £150 to £300 per day (Apparently) My advice - Get a job! (Obviously this is only my opinion, you are doing what you want, and nothing I say or do will change your mind and fair play to you, you may be in a better job and a better situation than me in a few years I don't know, this post will probably just be "another moan from Matt" but it what I really think, anyway good luck to whatever you do!)

Steven Posted 10 September 2005 Posted 10 September 2005 I think the thing is not just to drift out of school. When you leave school you should try and get further training and/or go on to higher/further education.
The People's Hero Posted 10 September 2005 Posted 10 September 2005 why? we could have an even better job after uni!! Don't bank on it!

Whilst a lot of that is sensible, I know good tradesmen who ARE out of work. Also your point about over population of the teaching profession seems to be based on little more than the fact that a lot of people say they would like to be teachers. In actual fact, this country NEEDS more teachers. Perhaps in the future, the balance could tip the other way but a training course in teaching is a good investment at the moment due to the availability of work in most areas and the various incentives being offered. Can't really be bothered to argue about this. It's horses for courses.
Alexikokopops Posted 10 September 2005 Posted 10 September 2005 gotta get my bloody personal statement done by 15th oct, any advice? I copied my sister's, worked for me. And Matt,m teachers are in demand, my mum (who's a maths teacher) got asked if she could fill in and teach English for a year they were that desperate. Now she works in Hinckley, dunno which school though.
Matt Posted 10 September 2005 Posted 10 September 2005 ' date='Sep 10 2005, 11:07 AM' post='173549']I copied my sister's, worked for me. And Matt,m teachers are in demand, my mum (who's a maths teacher) got asked if she could fill in and teach English for a year they were that desperate. Now she works in Hinckley, dunno which school though. Yeah I know, but that is the point there in demand now, but the amount of people going into the teching profession, law, phsycology e.t.c at uni are surely too many, everyone you speak to who are going to uni are doing teaching, phsycology, e.t.c, and come a few years time surely ther'll be too many, they many be in demand now but going on my theory there will be too many in years to come. and in the same way tradesmen are in demand and not many people seem to be learning trades (At the moment), expect in a trade you learn whilst working, and theres where the problem lies, because companies only want experienced tradesmen, but how are people going to become experienced when no-one will give young trainees jobs? I have had a nightmare trying to get jobs, in my first job I was mistreated I though I was going into a job where I would be learning, but really the company only wanted me as a labourer (The company didn't tell me this at the time though) so my plan was to just keep the job until I finished my course then I would piss off to another job that I wanted to do, after the big summer jobs this company "layed me off" so I was back to square one, I finally found my current job and I am very happy there the only thing worring me is the threat of redundancies, becuase I am only 1 year away from compleating my course! I'm not saying do a trade because its up to the person what they want to do if they wanna go to uni to learn, do it, but we do need tradesmen, and good tradesmen, Australia are crying out for tradesmen because they have realised they need them they are paying people to go, what is England doing? Oh the odd City and Guilds advert will do the trick A few years trades will be in a right state, as I said i'm not saying to people do a trade because the less people doing trades means more money for me(), although it means more work () And as I said in my original post on this subject I am not a pshycic I don't know what will happen in the future, people in the teaching profession or other professions I have mentioned may be in a better situation than me in a few years time, and good luck to everyone going to uni, but this is the way I see things going!
TrickyTrev Posted 10 September 2005 Posted 10 September 2005 gotta get my bloody personal statement done by 15th oct, any advice? You are applying to Oxbridge then I presume? I'm probably going to apply for Oxford, means I have to get all my UCAS stuff done by October too. They have 4 day interviews on top of all that including aptitude tests. It all seems liek a lot of extra hassle when the chances of getting in are small. <_<
