ThaiFox Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 Didn't Ranieri request this earlier in the season? I thought I read an article where he said it would be good for players like Dodoo and Chilwell to gain first team experience and exposure, and maybe come in matches that are already won?
Hollism Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 There's no need whatsoever to increase the size of the bench to 25. And by the way, can't we register up to 25 players, but under 21s don't have to be registered and can play whenever? So say Ben Chilwell was our only under-21, and he was starting a game. Would then all but one of our 25 players travel across the country. Leaving Marcin Wasilewski sat at home watching Jeff Stelling? How about if you were allowed only 3 subs but a youth player wouldnt count towards the 3 sub limit. So say if you had used 3 subs but a player got injured and had to come off then a youth player could go on the pitch. Maybe after they hit 20 years old they then become a proper substitute. You would find more youth players getting on the pitch taking over tired players and may impress. I prefer this idea and a similar thing popped into my mind as I was scrolling down. I'd suggest keeping it at 3 subs, with the option for a fourth sub for an under-21 home grown player. (If it were just set at an age with no other restrictions like in your example, then it would have a direct impact on the transfer market and big clubs paying even more for youngsters.) Could also add that although you get a total of 4 subs, you can only have 3 breaks for it. So if you use them all, at least 2 have to come on at the same time. Otherwise you could have a boring 0-0 game with 4 minutes added on for stoppages despite nothing happening for the first 90 minutes.
Zapp Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 As others have said the next part of progression would be 7 subs, but you're allowed an extra few youth players who don't count towards the 7 A bit like how they don't count towards the 25 man squad
glenelgfox Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 May as well have a "massive" bench and a "massive" dug out with designer Porsche seats to go with it! Top can build it at the same time he is adding another one or two tiers to the KP to squeeze in the massive 40 thousand plus per match! PS - Top of the league so we are officially massive!
Guest Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 I think the rules should be changed to what soccer aid has. Every club would have 12 celebrities, 6 professionals, with the celebrity goal keeper being required to play 2nd half.
Will1981 Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 where would they all sit the benches are not long enough.
davieG Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 Re having a 4th U21 sub, I don't think this would work unless there was a number of games played restriction because some players can be well established first teamers at 18+ giving them in effect 4 fully fledged subs. Putting provisos in any option just makes it too complicated and open to abuse.
Guest Mee-9 Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 Imagine the size of the warm up's along the touchline. It'd be like watching human centipede.
My Nads Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 It's fine how it is. Don't see any point for having so many players on the bench when the manager knows before hand what his likely subs will be. Only an injury on the pitch ever really changes that.
Guest Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 where would they all sit the benches are not long enough. they could sit randomly amongst the fans, it would be great for a bit of atmosphere and banter.
BigMicky Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 This will be proposed at some point so if you object to it, you'd all better start thinking of good reasons why not or come up with some good alternatives or it will happen. The tactical aspect is only minimal and isn't a good enough reason to stop it but extra spots for youth teamers or home grown players sounds a bit more interesting. Simple, it plays into the hands of bigger teams with better squads.
Fox seen in Norwich Posted 9 December 2015 Posted 9 December 2015 Would help increase capacity Serious answer: no, pointless. Instead we let the manager continue up to one hour before kickoff to decide which 7 of the squad he's realistically going to use
Leicester_Numan Posted 10 December 2015 Posted 10 December 2015 Simple, it plays into the hands of bigger teams with better squads. It may be a reason for you to object to it but that's not a good enough reason to stop it if/when it's proposed. You're all going to need better reasons or acceptable and viable alternatives and then make sure the powers that be are aware of them. Personally, I'm neither actively for or against it and I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was brought in.

Personally, I'm neither actively for or against it and I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was brought in. If we're talking about the big clubs as the traditional big 6, Man U, Man C, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs, then they'll always have 14 other clubs against them on things like this. It'd never get through the vote same as dropping to 18 team won't either.
Thracian Posted 10 December 2015 Posted 10 December 2015 It wouldn't appeal to me. It would diminish from the tactical battle and the minor excitement of potential uncertainty and would only give a slightly greater advantage to the big clubs who would have even less chance of being caught out by the aspiring pack. As for ruling that so many on the bench should be under 21s, or whatever, it'd just be another patronising gesture. If The Premiership wants to be a catalyst for the development of youth footballers - or even English youth footballers - they should do something constructive. I don't really see the Under 21 League as serving any great purpose as it stands.
bmt Posted 10 December 2015 Posted 10 December 2015 Why would it? You can still only make three subs during the game, the options you'd have are still the same with injuries whether you have 7 or 14 subs. So long as there are things imposed like x amount of positions going to home grown / youth team players I think it could be a good thing. Allowing people to bloody youngsters and give them experience in the first team more. If you have 7 you could have a gk, lb, cb, rb, cm, winger and two strikers. If you have 14 you could have two GKs (remember when both chelsea keepers had to go off a few years ago), two CBs with different attributes for tactical reasons, a defensive and offensive full backs, different roles of midfielders, specialist one sided wingers and a variety of strikers. More choice is definitely an advantage and subsequently injuries still have a further impact on those who are unfortunate enough to suffer them.
