Why do people have it in for Gareth Williams?

He along with Hughes are the best "footballers" we have at the club.

Ok he doesn't go round kicking people and doesn't get stuck in, but he is one of the only players we have who could change a game.

He does get lost in games but that is usually when we result to the long ball.

Give the guy a break, he will become a very good player for this club.

Unfortunately his 'lost' periods far outnumber his 'found' periods. When he puts in the same amount of effort as Hughes then you can compare them - and yes he is a 'good' footballer, I've seen many in my time but if they don't put in the effort and I don't mean of the headless chicken type but by making themselves available then they don't make it. Williams with his skills could probably be playing in the Premier but seems, by his attitude happy to be slumming it in the Championship.

i ve been a fan of williams ever since he signed for us and yeah your right he is a quality ball player. the problem i have with him is his lack of passion for this football club , he is the most inconsistant player we have and he wouldnt be in my side to travel to wolves where we are gonna have the fight of our lives even to get a draw

There is no doubt he has the quality to rip teams apart but his work rate and effort sometimes is laughable. Like Sparky said I would'nt have him playing today he is not that the sort of midfielder that will get us anything from the game.

hang on a minute, weren't people just the other day saying we should be going out to win games as we aret good enough at the back. make up your minds

I'm still waiting to see why he has such a high reputation.

His ball control and passing ability are okay - when he's involved - but generally he seems to be a periphery figure, a guy who drifts in and out and doesn't really have the commanding presence of great midfielders.

If he had the constant involvement and threat of a Scholes then I wouldn't give a damn that he can't tackle and has little appetite for the defensive side of a midfielders job, but he doesn't. Worse still he never scores.

So what you get when all is analysided is a positive contribution that only amounts to a fraction of the time he is on the pitch. He should get some footage of David Gibson playing the attacking midfielder's role. He'd be awed like nipper on his first day at school.

Anyone believing Williams is a truly good player would be left speechless if they watched Gibson. On a rating of 0-10 in comparison I'd be generous to give Williams a three. It's a bit like comparing gold with tinfoil. Given the chance I'd sell him.

I find Gareth quite frustrating, he quite obviously has a lot of talent - he just doesnt use it a lot of the time and hes a bit of a bottler as well  having said that I do think hes a useful addition to the team and in time he will become the player we all want him to be.

He would be fine if the game was 10 minutes long but it is 90! He goes missing on a pitch as big as Walkers for long spells, which is a job.And opportunities he misses are basic and straightforward and cost us dearly in lost points.Send me a pair of the rose coloured glasses teblin.

what u on about ? whats that got to do with how williams is playing?

Let's just say that - in some of the games - I didn't even realise Williams was playing until towards the end of the first half (and even so, thought he might have come off before the end) :D

Having said that, yesterday I was watching some highlights from the July 05 friendlies: he did put in some good shots at the goal there. Haven't seen (much of) that in the championship games yet.

Do you think the two are not connected then?

Unfortunately when Leicester lose the ball and are under threat from the opposition the defence, being a bit vulnerable, needs all the help it can get.

Were Williams such a creative player that he were making one or two goals a game and/or scoring a goal a game, I would probably forgive his anonymity as far as defensive/track back duties are concerned.

I'm one of those who believe ball players - footballing artists if you like - need to save their precious energy, their speed over the first two yards, for what they do best...without being too knackered to think when their skills are needed.

The trouble is Williams doesn't make one or two goals a game and he doesn't score any which means he's got to justify his presence in other ways.

When you're one-nil down or under seige at 0-0 you cannot afford for people to allow opposition players to run unchecked from midfield.

Does that explain it clearly enough?

Williams is a good player I admit, but he is what I call a 'waster'. So much talent and so little effort. No productivity for the most part either. He doesn't want to get involved in midfield and is more than happy to play well for 2 minutes then disappear for the next 15.

If I was the manager he wouldn't be starting in the first 11 that's for sure.

He's like a right footed Stefan Oakes, bags of potential and talent but very little drive, self motivation and work ethic, Under Paul Hart at Nottingham Forest he got numerous kicks up the backside and performed very well in the season we got him. Does Levein treat him too well I wonder? When Levein took over I was under the impression people who put in below par performances would lose their place to more deserving individuals so why people like Hughes should be played out of position to accomodate a lazy arse like Williams does make me question Levein. Agreed Gaz has talent but as did Stef and look where hes ended up.

It wasn't until after the game today that I realized he wasn't playing at all. lol

When I listened to most of the game (woke up a little late :() and when I heard nothing of Williams, I just assumed he was hiding behind all the other midfielders again. lol
