Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 How could we have counter attacked Iceland? They were content to sit deep, what were we supposed to do? We went 1-0 up. Maybe not concede from a throw a minute later?
purpleronnie Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 nothing will change, this latest debacle just lowers the bar for the next yes man. id rather england didnt bother with a national team because the fa are a joke. I say forget the premiership players. Just pick from other leagues. Hungry dedicated players who see england as a step up rather than an inconvenience. Let's face it we couldn't do any worse.
Cheese Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 As others have mentioned, had the team been selected on form and players such as Drinkwater, Cresswell, Noble and maybe Defoe were selected, I think the players would have put a lot more effort in and in my opinion would have been a much more entertaining side to watch.
Fox92 Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 Copy Spain? They've gone out before us in both the last two tournaments. Copying other teams is exactly what we shouldn't be doing. We need a manager who recognises the strengths of English players and plays to those strengths instead of trying to get them to play systems that they're not used to. Tbf they've only gone out before us because of the days they've played on, we've not actually got further than them, but you're right we shouldn't be trying to copy other teams we should look at our strengths and play to them. I wasn't talking about style of play, I was talking about how football is run in their (and Germany) Country.
purpleronnie Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 The last thing we need to do is copy other nations, we've been trying that for years and it won't work. We don't produce technically gifted players very often and when we do they aren't allowed to flurish.
Dodgy Bob Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 I wasn't talking about style of play, I was talking about how football is run in their (and Germany) Country. The point that Spain have done no better than us in the last two tournaments is still relevant. People blame the make up of the premier league every time we disappoint but for me that's a weak excuse. The premier league isn't to blame for Roy Hodgson's staggering incompetence. There was a decent team available, Roy just couldn't see it.

Agree RE Hodgson, he's never been competent though.

m4DD0gg Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 One of the key problems is we think are young players are better than they actually are.....Kane, Sterling, Wilshire are all fairly shit in comparison to some of their international counterparts but because they are in the premier league they come with the stigma that they must be good because the cost the best part of or are valued at 50 million quid. That shit can not be good for some one and to be honest i can see Kane and Sterling really struggling with confidence next season (good for leicester like). When Kane hit that huth'esque free kick he looked like he was going to burst in to tears.
Dodgy Bob Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 The PL lacks quality of English players. The quality in the league is made from the foreign players. Agree RE Hodgson, he's never been competent though. The English players would still be of the same quality even if there were no foreign players. They might even get worse because the standard of the league would be lower. Foreign players would be replaced by English players currently playing in the lower leagues. The premier league would become a slightly better version of the Championship, which let's not forget is already a fiercely competitive, highly professional league full of English players. If we can't produce the requisite number of quality English players now, I fail to see how reducing the number of foreigners in the league is going to make any difference.

I've been thinking about this too tbh The premier league is full of great players that have been poached from foreign clubs How many top European clubs are trying to sign English players from our league? Who was the last English player of any note that transferred to somewhere out of the UK for any sort of money? You could probably argue that David Beckham was the last player of any note that was wanted by top European clubs We don't have any world class players any more, that's the sad truth. We're full of average players that are paid far too much.

We're full of average players that are paid far too much. Latest English players to move abroad really have been Lampard/Gerrard (payday) then really Ravel Morrison, Micah Richards or Scott Carson are only real recent ones (no fees though if remember correct) so probably is right that Beckham was last one to go abroad for any sort of fee. However much I agree that English players aren't as in demand and potentially a reason to our failure I don't think that unless it's a Barca/Real there is an ignorance from English players to move abroad and adapt to new league/language/culture etc. As a history there isn't really too many that have travelled the continent to play - Gazza, Lineker, Waddle, Owen, Mcmanananananaman, platt, Woodgate. Can't really think of too many in last 20 years who have moved, whatever reasons they may be? Think English players are given this automatic high fee too as if there made of gold or something too, a club always demands more money for an English player which has probably out of most foreign teams as a lot have less financial resources. Edit - forgot to add Beckham to the list although mentioned him earlier and forgot to mention the French Joey Barton
Guest Col city fan Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 Genuinely af the moment I don't give a shite. I am sick to death of continually bigging up players before its really warranted, paying them far too much money and expecting them to be really bothered. The state of English football is dreadful. How to fix it? Fook knows.
Dan Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 Rooney has got to retire now as well. This tournament for me was the last chance saloon and when the going got tough he didn't deliver. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if he ends up still in the picture though.
lcfcfoz Posted 29 June 2016 Posted 29 June 2016 England 11 I would of liked. Forster Bertrand Cahill Jagielka Simpson Albrighton Drinkwater Henderson Sturridge Vardy Defoe
