Vardy is only small he has no chance against strong, tall centre backs which Southampton have. Even Messi would have no chance with our direct style of play. For Vardy to be bottom, even somehow below Ulloa, is shocking.

For Vardy to be bottom, even somehow below Ulloa, is shocking. With respect I think you're missing the point. Half of the reason we end up launching it is because Vardy isn't moving. It's not like Vardy is getting himself into brilliant positions and then people are ignoring him, he's standing on the half way line waiting for the ball rather than moving into space to receive it. The point about Messi is an odd one too because Vardy has thrived when we've been at our most direct (certainly not something you'd say of Messi) - not just in terms of his goals, so many of which came from quick, direct counter attacks, but his benefit to the team from just allowing us to "get out" by making a sensible or clever run into space between the full back and centre half which allows one of our more technically limited defenders to get the ball downfield and relieve pressure without having to go through Drinkwater. With him standing in the centre circle "conserving energy" our centre backs either clunk it downfield and hope Slimani wins it in the air or play it short to Drinkwater who looks up and sees he has no movement in front of him and back we go again. He had 1 shot (gifted to him) and made 8 passes in an hour on Sunday, it's no wonder he came bottom of the pile. Had he been busting a gut to make himself a viable passing option and received the ball as infrequently I dare say people's ratings might have been a bit higher. As it is I'd say he was lucky to get 4.3.

It's as though they don't know what to do with the ball so it's just launched long. It happened at Old Trafford, it happened at Hull. We literally win nothing in the air yet we still insist on playing aimless balls forward and it's so frustrating to watch (not enjoyable at all). As for the chance, yes he should have scored/passed, but lets not forget he closed the ball down for that opportunity to happen - I don't think it was exactly gifted to him in that way.

I think you're being a bit too generous to Vardy but I can understand your point of view. On the chance he had, hed actually stopped putting pressure on van Dijk by the time the mistake came - VVD had dealt with Vardy's initial press and then made a mistake with Vardy a good 2-3 yards away and having come to a virtual standstill. If anything I'd say it further serves the point that with a bit more movement he might get a few more opportunities!
Koke Posted 5 October 2016 Posted 5 October 2016 This is the second game of the season where Vardy is bottom of the rating list and the worst player on the pitch for us. Last season he barely dipped below top 3. Vardy needs to bulk up his ideas. He looks like a lost child out there.

Ted Maul Posted 8 October 2016 Posted 8 October 2016 Overall I think the ratings are pretty fair. The 86% manager confidence is bizarre though, and I thought Simpson was our best player behind Schmeichel.
