SILENT STADIUMS: THE MYTH OF PREMIER LEAGUE ATMOSPHERE

I can't  comment on other clubs but for us I think one if he problems especially since we moved is the make up of the crowd. As said in the article there's  a lot more older people now and at F St they tended to be in the main stand or the upper tier of the DD were as now they are spread around the ground more. From my vantage point I can see plenty in the kop which is not surprising since the club encouraged that mix when we moved. The kop is also the cheapest part of the ground and although there are more older people they can't all afford the other stands.

Another reason for the mix is because those that used to sing more like myself still like to be where the action is.

All this diluted any singing area.

Sorry mate, but disagree. I'm 65, UFS member, stand in SK1, and sing. Age is not a barrier to getting behind the lads. Its simply an attitude problem. Prices are bloody disgusting though - even for a pensioner!

Well I'm  older and I'm  not saying it's  a barrier but what I see  sitting in G1

I hope to see more discussions about this going forward - it matters a lot. The commercialising of football has in my opinion eroded most of the things I grew up loving it for. So many negative side affects are becoming apparent and it's only us that talk about it. I've never heard when we're singing "where's you famous atmosphere" at Anfield, being broadcast over a sky channel.

I hope we keep pressing these issues.

I have to agree with this, although you do get some anomalies like Steveherbe.

When you had terracing in England and in countries where they still do, they have a natural migration of fans. The older fans got the less they wanted to get involved in singing and general rowdyness so they moved. As every stand in our stadium is the same and all areas apart from a couple are pretty tame and safe there is no need for fans to move when they get to the age where they don't fancy getting involved with singing as much.

Obviously this is a generalisation, but it's pretty clear to see the age demographic when you go in L1 or the back of SK1.

I agree, I get the impression that L1 is pretty much full of Lads but the Kop where I sit is a real mish mash of age's. There must a couple of 80 something's in the row behind me. There's also a group of lads near me in their late 20's who don't get very animated at all, a lot of the time they seem to be checking how their online bets are doing.

I'm nearly 50 and I actually prefer the view in the East and West stands but I prefer the atmosphere in the Kop.

The other problem we have at the moment is in a ground with 29000 home seats and 23000 STH's and taking out the family stand you're really limited on where you can migrate to.

As more are forced to leave the family stand due age criteria that's not going to get any better.

This, say what you like about Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea, etc... but Everton are the absolute worst for a home atmosphere

The Everton crowd are very reactive. If the team are playing crap they just sit there, but when they get going Goodison is very loud. They're either very loud or very quiet though and it's usually the latter.

For all the myth of how great atmospheres used to be in England, that's more the reality. Goodison has more stayed to that. Football crowds were often very quiet and never really sang all game for the most part, just sporadically, whereas nowadays as soon as a ground goes quiet the away fans pipe up with a put down about it.

it doesn't help that there's a lot of foreign football on telly now so you can see the difference when you watch a Bundesliga game and then flip over to West Brom against Middlesbrough.

Lack of organisation is the main issue for me. Sad fact is that in an age where pay on the gate and stand where you like is almost non-existent, where away tickets have to be purchased weeks beforehand, and a core demographic of 16-35s are often priced out of attending, like-minded people need to be more organised than they ever were in the past.

Sadly, few actually attempt it because it's not seen as the done thing in this country.

There's no excuse for high gate prices with TV money dwarfing the take anyway. The atmosphere generated by supporters is the lifeblood of the product they are selling worldwide. Eventually they'll kill the golden goose.

It's true this. One club owner recently said, we don't actually need fans anymore as we make all our money from TV revenue. Not sure if they realise that the TV companies make their money from....oh Yeh. Football fans!

Well mate, I've been called some things in my time, but an anomaly? Isnt that a portal thing that allows time travel? Thats why an old bloke like me can blend in with you young lads - and long may it continue.

Then you have fans saying £30 a game is good value.. £55 for the champions league is a bargain... corporate mugs... yes I pay that money but it pisses me off... pure greed from the club. It should be £10 a ticket for under 18's and O.A.Ps  .. Twenty is Plenty for everyone else...

The atmosphere in recent times in the KP has been electric...  Maybe winning stuff helps???

was in SK4 in Philbo, AKA the library, but, on moving the KP the group got mixed up a bit and we get plenty of noise generated in and around my area now...  I think the clappers have helped too - I like 'em
