Ric Flair Posted 11 October 2005 Posted 11 October 2005 Cats are worse. At least dogs have the excuse of being stupid. Cats are manipulative users who would eat their owners if they (the cats) were big enough. Agreed. Bang on.
Thracian Posted 11 October 2005 Posted 11 October 2005 Dogs are horrid creatures. I don't like them. I can only imagine you have never owned one. They are the most instinctive of animals. An intelligent, properly cared-for dog will tell you much faster than any doctor if you are ill. They instinctively now your state of mind and will react accordingly, being either consoling, playful, quietly content, inconspicuous, whatever. In the case, certainly of a Shepherd, they will, with thoughtful, friendly training become wholly trustworthy, faithful, useful and companionable. They make you exercise and their expression of joy in exercising themselves is the perfect tonic for the start of any day. I believe too that there is considerable evidence of the social benefits to children in having a dog or other pet because it draws them away from selfishness it makes them think of the needs of others. Dogs offer immeasurable amounts of comfort in difficult times, and, again relating to my experience of the Shepherd, they take great joy in learning anything that makes them of value to their owner (look at sheepdogs, guide dogs, mountain rescue dogs). Sheeka could easily have filled any of these roles. She could also have sniffed out drugs or criminals. Sheeka was a giant of a dog, still remembered in my neighbourhood nearly a decade after her death. Along with our children it was the greatest blessing of our lives to have enjoyed her time and enjoyed her company. I would run with her, wrestle with her, put my arm between those massive fangs and have her "fight" in fun to hold on. I'd have her leaping over streams and through hoops, I'd watch her swim, bound over mountain tops in the Lake District and Snowdonia and across the hills of Bradgate. I'd watch her find a scented lure from half a mile away. I'd see her guarding my youngest son for hours as he lay in his pram in the garden. I'd spot her on the pitchside as a dozen kids and more played football in the safe knowledge that one word would bring her to the rescue if necessary. I'd smile as security men called at our house and asked if they could borrow her to find some youthful michchief-makers who had run to hide in the canal basin. Sheeka had presence as a dog and many who spent an hour in her company had their negative views transformed. Proud, gracious, sensitive her presence always made everything seem okay. How we'd have loved to be able to bring up her offspring but no - despite three or four attempts she would never breed, not once, not ever. When her time came she ambled over to me to let me know. The vet arrived and she looked at me one last time, trusting that I could help. And so she took the calmest and most peaceful of last breaths. And wherever she went I just hope she met my dad. They'd deserve one another..
Guest Posted 11 October 2005 Posted 11 October 2005 I can only imagine you have never owned one. Correct. The only pet we had was my sister! Animals in their natural environment are great. However I don't see the need in pets, well not for myself. I can see why people have them though, but I find animals dirty and smelly, and having seen a friend's pet dog sniffing around another dog's poo or bum before bounding over to lick your face does fill me with horror!! Dogs are also crap art critics.
Alexikokopops Posted 11 October 2005 Posted 11 October 2005 It's all about the Pug. Cats are awesome too, we have an adopted cat at our Student house called Frank IV, he's the coolest cat around. He spends more time here then at his actual house, and we feed him ham.

Guest Posted 11 October 2005 Posted 11 October 2005 One thing you should know is that dog saliva has antiseptic properties. So does human saliva, and I know where my mouth has been, thank you.
lush Posted 11 October 2005 Posted 11 October 2005 Dogs are horrid creatures. I don't like them. I agree, with the exception of scooby doo. Animals are wild creatures, there not civilised like most humans, but some humans take so much care of them, then give n recieve love, that they dont realise there wild creatures. My friend has a cat, and knows if she dont give it good enough food, the cat will run away.
john_lcfc Posted 11 October 2005 Posted 11 October 2005 i like golden retreivers and labradors but all dogs and cats rule
