BoyJones Posted 8 October 2017 Posted 8 October 2017 For me it's got to be Coventry City aka "the vermin"; palways felt there was much more needle in games against them then either Forest or Derby, particularly Derby who I have never really considered as rivals anymore than, say, Sheffield Wednesday. Think the Cov thing goes back to April 68 when our coaches got bricked as we had won 1-0, or a year later when a packed ground and I mean packed ground saw us lose 1-0 in a the key relegation decider. This after we had "taken" the lead after 88 minutes, to have the goal chalked off and then Cov break away immediately and score. i was even on the Bristol City end at Highfield Road in May 1977 with the loser likely to be relegated. However, Jimmy Hill got the game delayed and the other team in the equation, Sunderland, I think, went down instead. Anyone interested google Cov 2 Bristol City 2 1977.
The Fox Covert Posted 8 October 2017 Posted 8 October 2017 Portsmouth are supposed not to like us because we beat them in the play-offs in 1993, after finishing 19 points behind them in the League. A couple of years later City were playing at Fratton Park and I went along. Because of traffic congestion I was a bit late and arrived at the ground just before kick off. I didn't look carefully enough at the signs, paid my money, went through the turnstiles and on to the terraces just as they were about to kick off. I should have looked at the signs more carefully as I was surrounded by the Pompey Dots. I made my excuses and made to leave but some fella said to me that they didn't mind me being there and I could stay if I liked. So I stayed and had general football banter with them in the quiet bits and went over to the away end at half time. The Pompey Dots are in legend some of the most notorious hooligans in the land. However as a Pompey fella I used to work with said to me, they hate each other even more than they hate the supporters of rival teams. Each estate, like Paulsgrove, has a slightly different dot pattern so they can recognise each other in the street without even speaking.

Cov simply can't be that big a rivalry any more, it'd be like billing Man United vs Accrington as a big game. Although I am sure they take pleasure in us losing. Forest is the only one that has consistently been a rivalry. None of them are particularly fierce.
