Always good to see some ESB love. A beautiful drop.

In Westminster area for work next week, anyone recommend any decent boozers?

I am more interested in the quality of beer than anything else but interesting/quirky/historic pubs with good beer, even better.  I'll also be around Paddington as well potentially.

Thanking you!

Westminster is crap for pubs.

The Hole In The Wall by Waterloo is possibly my favourite London boozer. Massive (and good) selection.

Depends which part of Westminster. The bit close to Parliament is as Stadt said not very good for pubs. There always seem to be a lot near St James' park station that look quite nice but probably don't have a great selection of beers. Then a little walk north to Charing Cross you have the famous Harp of course which I still think is classic although it splits opinions.

I'll be nearer St James Park station area, don't need a massive selection of beer as long as what they have is in good nick

iirc like most parts of central London there's a Fullers pub which will probably be quite good and a Greene King pub you'll obviously want to avoid. Probably somebody who knows the area better than me will be able to make a better recommendation...

For Paddington,  The Victoria on Strathearn Place is good.

Currently on half a Kings Pale (Hawkstone/Scottish Stores collaboration) in, surprisingly, The Scottish Stores at Kings Cross before my train home.

First time I've been in here sober. As good a pub as when you're half cut, which is pleasing.

Been at the top of that street a thousand times but never been down it - always assumed The Scottish Stores was a shop. lol

Could never figure out how they were making a profit selling shortbread and tartan in Kings Cross.

Big benefit of visiting Bromley for the 92 on Saturday is visiting a whole part of London, I've never ventured in.

Firstly Bromley with its Star & Garter pub - this is Stormbird's sister pub

Then Herne Hill after the game and maybe STormbird on the way back where all the sexy people drink

Rehill’s in Jesmond is the best off license/bottle shop I’ve ever been to. So much breadth and depth.

Star & Garter supposed to be open at 12.30pm, closed.

End up in some Greene King off the peg for a half

Back over the road to Star & Garter opens at 1.10pm, very disappointing but some good beers on show

Walk to Cork & Cask, good micro pub in a old corner shop

On way back, a big surprise, the Bricklayers Arms, looks crap but instead full of Bromley FC old gear and a real mixture of ales

Went for grub and ended up at one of the shadiest places I think I've ever drank at.

Craft Metropolis - terrible name but it's hosting a Verdant residence. Great beer but felt like you were gatecrashing someone's party as it was the opening day of the residence. It also meant walking round Loughborough Junction, on the outskirts of Brixton, which was interesting.

Newcastle has loads of pubs but has the same problem with Leeds. Giant, generic contemporary bars without a lick of character plus all the usual chains.

Crown Posada, Bridge Hotel and the Free Trade Inn were the pick of the bunch.

Is the foxestalk consensus that Sheffield is the best pub city in the UK? I need to get up there and try some.

Sheffield is great but the centre isn't that strong. Suburbs are cracking though.

Depends on what you like. My city pub rating is some combo of volume, beer selection, interior, atmosphere, price, pub proximity, city attractiveness, stumble-ability

Best in class per city size imo:

London

Sheffield, Bristol, Liverpool

Edinburgh, Nottingham, Norwich, Hull

York

Haven't been to Glasgow or Belfast so can't comment on those.

There's an incredible pub at the train station before you even get to the town, so pace yourself.

Thought I better acclimatise myself before going to Arran Distillery with a couple of mates next weekend

Yeah agree with most of that. London is a hard one because it's SO much bigger than everywhere else. Whilst London has lots of great pub buildings, a lot of them are chain run and a bit rubbish. There's also lots of areas where there aren't many great pubs and it feels cask light compared to cities further north IMO.

Haven't done Bristol, Norwich and Hull properly.

Nottingham is annoyingly good. Even the suburbs are good, particularly Beeston and West Bridgford.

It would be interesting to delve into villages and see what the best pub villages are in the UK. How would the likes of Barrow and Mountsorrel compare to others...
