Paving The Way to Honour The Legends.

Recommended Posts

In Newmarket, (the home of British horseracing), the Local Authority have laid commemorative paving stones set into the pavement at random intervals along the High Street.  They commemorate legendary local figures from the horseracing fraternity, (both human & equine).

I would like to suggest that this might be a cost effective way of honouring our own legends, before the achievement becomes simply a page in football history, and we get accused of living in the past.

It needn't be near the Stadium, indeed it would maybe be better to be right in the town centre, so that the wider population in years to come can be reminded of that season of all seasons.

When compared to commissioning & erecting a statue/s, the cost would be minimal, & would not be delayed by planning laws & red tape. It wouldn't supplant a statue, if one ever came about.

The whole squad, (& management, training & fitness staff etc.) could be honoured, even those who through no fault of their own didn't figure very often, or who had a back room role, but still contributed to the success could receive some form of recognition in this way.

Just imagine in 20 years time some small kid being taken shopping by his Mum & asking "Mum, why does that stone say 'Wes Morgan/Jamie Vardy' etc. etc."  Brings a tear to the eye just thinking about it!

I commend the proposal to the House.

We did that years ago....

It's just a struggle when about 3 famous people are from here.

in 20 years they will have already been trashed and ignored by the council....just like the sculpture mix of Football/cricket/rugby lost the respect of the city...

and it's people....Now that brings a year to my eye...!!!!!! ??

I can almost guarantee that absolutely nothing will be done to honour our title winning squad.

Such a shame.

Well not completely

Tories would honour former Leicester City owner Khun Vichai by naming an 'Oyster card' after him - https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/leicester-news/tories-would-honour-former-leicester-2761167

Although they have no chance of ousting Soulsby

A city-centre pavement soon gets covered in fag-ends, chewy, spittle and dog bob.

It deserves a tribute, but above ground-level. Not holding my breath though. Leicester has a lot going for it, but isn't great at promoting itself or its achievements.

I agree. Any tribute would have to be fan funded.

What could be a more fitting and long lasting tribute than being on a card stuffed inside every OAP's stinky purse as they get on a dirty Arriva

The club pretty much instantly stopped the fan groups collecting for a Vichai statue. Whether they would do same for the players you would like to think not.

How exactly did they do that in a free country?  (That's a genuine question, not an argumentative challenge).

I think top said that one was being commissioned before anyone got the chance.

They knew of it about to kick in and a public donation drive begin. An email was circulated asking for it not to happen as the club basically would be doing one internally funded. Wish more of a fight was given as it would mean so much more fan funded but I think at the time it was felt best to respect the club wishes.
