The 00s

Are we in agreement that the 00s is the worst decade for music in a very long while? Sure, there are a few good bands around, but, in my opinion, we need a new Nirvana or Sex Pistols. Somebody to raise the standards of everyone else.

The 90s Britpop battles etc were fantastic, what do we have now? Sugababes versus Mylo?

Not really.

But for those that choose to listen and like music that is constantly shoved down your throat instead of searching for the better bands out there i'm not suprised they think that. British music has hit an all time low this decade though IMO.

depends on the genre

the sort of alternative/acoustic music has recently took a huge jump forward, some of the artists like james blunt/jason mraz are beautiful (no pun intended) in their performances and like no other i've heard from numerous past artists. If you looked at nirvanas kind of music, then maybe i'd agree but i don't really listen to that kind of music so couldn't make a big judgement.

you have to remember there is only so much you can do with music, every time a new song is made... there is one less possibility of thing you can do with the instrument. it is a true talent to make a piece of music, different, unique, and tasteful that hasn't been done in the many decades of music!

its hard to judge the decade until its gone. if like you said about the 90's you had judged it in 95 you'd say all we have had is Nirvana. no were getting blur, oasis, the verve and pulp all shoved down our throats.

WEll for one the Oasis v Blur battle was shite cause it was the 2 bands worst songs and just hyped by the media. For every Pulp there was a Menswear and for every Oasis there was a Mansun and for every Blur there was another shite band. Britpop was like everything, the good was good and the bad was bad but easily forgotton.

I personally think this decade has brought some great bands/albums like Kings of Leon, Futureheads, Avalanches, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Maximo Park, LCD Soundsystem, Killers, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Arcade Fire, MIA, The Streets, Dizzee Rascal, Goldfrapp, The Sleepy Jackson, NERD, Tom McRae, Ed Harcourt, Kanye West, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Amp Fiddler, Alicia Keys, Libertines, Outkast, British Sea Power, Coldplay, The Coral, Elbow, Flaming Lips, Fat Boy Slim, Muse, White Stripes to name just a few off the top of my head. I don't like certain genre's so I can't comment on them but there has been loads of good music this decade already.

Alot of those artists would have been just as successful in the 90's as now, and in my opinion apart from the debut Oasis album, bits of Pulp and various songs on my ipod, I don't listen to the Britpop albums cause they sound so dated. I imagine if I listen to them I'd enjoy them cause they'd stir so many memories but musically the bands above are far superior (IMO).

There are always going to be epoch making albums like Radiohead, Nirvana etc and it'll be interesting to see which bands do that this decade.

Every year/decade since I've bought music has been the same, a load of tripe mostly with some quality thrown in. Theres even been some good pop music this decade with Beyonce, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera etc, which I personally wouldn't buy but like the occasional song of.

The best from every genre is as good as the best of every genre from the last decade.

Yeah but the 90's were great!

I think bands like Oasis, Blur, Pulp Shed 7, Weller et al set up what we have now cos most of the bands now would have been young enough to be a part of the scene.

I think it seems to come in stages where we get loads of bands at once then baron times where theres nothing i.e. 1998-2002 that was boring.

And the most popular music of the 90's was dance - the charts were packed full of techno, house and handbag from about 94-2000 and even before that if you take into account the latter days of acid house and the early days of techno.

Britpop only lasted from 95-97 and as most people agree a lot of it was good but there was also alot of pants, it wasn't this all encompassing genre of quality that makes the music of the past few years poor in comparison.

Gotta say this year especially has been poor, this year I have just been buying CD's from years ago and updating my older CD's collection, Then this year for me has been about buying alot of Greatest Hits - Ian Brown, The Prodigy, e.t.c as well!

I have bought this CD's this year from new bands and artists, but they havn't blew me away.

The worst decade for music must be the 70's. Well apart from the Punk, Mod and Ska Revival at the end.

It was all Glitter and Shit! Like the Osmonds, Sweet and the Carpenters.

Just rubbish!

I don't think the decade has been to bad, but the worst thing is that the mainstream music is to Americanised, aimed at young wannabe bad boys. The 00's has also so far been a decade for slow boring depressing music aswell.

I'm with Mr C on this one.

Now I'm off to listen to some "I Am Spartacus".

Spartacus was a Thracian. I've gotta have some of that!!! :)

i think its all the pop idol bollax. wheres the 4 piece bands who grew up at school, like the housemartins. even they have split, the lead singer is in the beatiful south, and the drummer is fat boy slim.

all there is well seems, is pathetic love songs. wheres the frankie goes to hollywoods of this world, sex pistols, madness, david bowie. ok theres oasis, but will funking young YAK!

no wonder music sharing is massive.

I think bands like Sex Pistols came along at a time when they were needed socially! It doesn't REALLY reflect their quality...Although they are great don't get me wrong. But there is stuff as good, if not better out there, you just have to look for it!

Not that you have to look hard for them but I'm listening to Blink 182's greatest hits at the minute and I'm reminded just how class they actually were/are - I dunno.

Good post.

Is Blink 182's greatest hits worth buying then?

I downloaded it. I'm glad 'Dammit' and 'Man Overboard' are on, a couple of their less known gems.

I have a couple of their albums already and I'm poor so I downloaded. Depends on your own situation regarding the above m8 :D
