Stuliasz Posted 18 November 2005 Posted 18 November 2005 Hey everyone, I am looking for a bit of advice on reading (no sarcy comments please). I have never been a big reader of fiction, but I fancy getting into it for something to do when I'm a bit bored. Can anyone recommend some good books to get me started? I've not read a fiction book since GCSE English when we were forced to do so (probably the reason why I rebelled against reading )
Rincewind Posted 18 November 2005 Posted 18 November 2005 depends what sort of stuff you are into. I assume not Mills and Boon? Name a genre to help the suggestions. Science fiction Fantasy Detective Classic Romance Naughty romance Picture book naughty romance. Ermmm! Western Mystery Murder Sport Horror Gothic Just a few suggestions hope they help. I like Sci Fi Fantasy and Horrer myself. My Favorite horrer author is Stephen King. Got a 3 in one book at the Mo. The Shining, Carrie and Misery. All made into reasonable films.
Cat Burger Posted 18 November 2005 Posted 18 November 2005 I read classics mainly, for my uni course. Reading Huck Finn at the moment by Mark Twain. I'm Not far through but enjoying it. My course sets about 3 books a week, I'm having trouble with that Two books that I recommend and are easy to get into are: Brighton Rock by Graham Greene. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess.

Nationwider Posted 19 November 2005 Posted 19 November 2005 I agree with everyone above who's recommended Dave Gorman and Danny Wallace books. I'd start with "Are You Dave Gorman?", but they are all good, easy reading and v.funny.
The People's Hero Posted 19 November 2005 Posted 19 November 2005 At the moment I'm re-reading a John Peel biography whilst also reading a few books on Dylan and Sam Kashner - When I was Cool, about the beat poets etc.
Scarby Posted 19 November 2005 Posted 19 November 2005 I agree with everyone above who's recommended Dave Gorman and Danny Wallace books. I'd start with "Are You Dave Gorman?", but they are all good, easy reading and v.funny. Tony Hawks Around Ireland With A Fridge one of the best i have read, it follows the story of a bet Tony made which led him to hitch hike around Ireland with a fridge. The adventure he took on led in him into the Irish folks hearts. A great Read! Playing the Moldovans at Tennis Another bet, this time after watching England Vs Moldova on the telly the bet was for Tony to play all the Moldovan national team at tennis. One Hot Wonderland In the 80s Tony had a top 5 hit with morris minor and the majors and after a dinner party picks up another bet this time to get another top 5 record. Dave Gorman Are you Dave Gorman? Well are you? Dave and his flatmate Danny Wallace trek around the world looking for and meeting Dave Gormans! Why, cos it was a bet of course! Googlewhack Adventure Had to explain this one, but another bet and again a round the world trip looking for googlewhacks Danny Wallace star of BBCs how to start you own country helped write and edit Are you Dave Gorman? Join Me again a fantastic book. Danny was bored and so put an advert in the paper asking people to Join Him just send me a passport photo to.......and people did, they didnt know why it just seemed a right thing to do . Soon Danny had thousands of people in his 'cult' that called him the leader and so he decided that his cult should do good deeds - random acts of kindness on fridays- known as the good friday agreement! Yes Man After going through a bad patch, Danny has a life changing experience on a bus when a fella turns to him and says say yes more!! and he did and founf him self all over the world by just saying Yes to every question he was asked!! including a moment when a guy in a nightclcub asks him if he was looking at his girlfriend...!!!! The story is great and very moving and also continues a search for who that man on the bus was...was it Jesus??
