No. They lost because they had a chance to knock out of the group stage a big team like Germany. It's simple as that. The first Japan goal is actually an own goal by Unai Simon. Check again the replay, he punches the ball inside his net. 

Imagine if England had the opportunity to do the same in a group stage against Brazil.

Costa Rica did lead a one point, which would cause Spain to lose out if they lost to Japan, so I am pretty sure it was not a game plan to lose. But I am also sure, that they did not try 100% the last 10 min with Germany leading 4-2.

I reckon many had 2 teams from this group reaching the Semi-final at least..

But hoping for that Japanese upset..

 

Though in the end,the cream has reached the top....

The lower rated countries,put up and delivered good games & had quality moments. Some good football all-round,which often hasn't been the case..Qat_ar ,though losing out,never really got hammered..
