Just got thinking about the big wages that we’ve been handing out willy nilly. I’d like to speak to a psychologist about this, but seeing as I can’t readily do that I thought I’d ask you fine folk…

So you’re a middling club who are known for paying well. We know this from various players in the game who have said as such.

Do you sign for that club fully motivated to help them succeed and run through brick walls… or do you think it’s a little bit weird, inflates your opinion of yourself/make you think are better than you are, decrease effort (because why bother trying when you get paid so much anyway) or even take the piss out of them for paying you so much money. Am I making sense?

I just don’t think it’s as clear cut as if you pay people more their performance levels increase, which seems to be the logic we’ve followed.

Obviously lots of other things to consider like motivational qualities of the manager etc, but clearly for the wrong character paying them too much may well backfire. I feel we’re always a club that needs players who are hungry and have something to prove. Clearly in my view over paying average tossers takes away their hunger or perception that they have something to prove because they may think they’ve already made it.

I genuinely feel we are fortunate that some of our better paid players are coming to the ends of their contracts.

Imagine, when we get relegated, if the likes of Amartey, Tielemans, Bertrand.. and a number of others, stayed with us in the Championship because no-one else wanted them. Ie if they had a couple of years left on their contracts.

We’d be a Sunderland mark two… having been relegated and still with an enormous wage bill being paid to garbage footballers or to players that did not want to be here.

At least we can start over in the summer.. finally rid ourselves of these guys, sell Maddison, and re-develop the squad in an affordable way.

Honestly, there's not a lot that I'm bothered about in those first 2 columns (stolen from Reddit)

****ing travesty that we got here though.

Working back from the right hand side, there's the bones of a decent championship side there.

Yeah that’s how I see it.

If we can retain at least some of the existing lot (eg Daka and Justin), get good money for Maddison and the parachute payments, we should have both the nucleus of a decent squad and money to strengthen it.

IF this happens, I’d be surprised if we aren’t one of the favourites with the bookies to come back up.

BUT it depends how the money is spent. I wouldn’t trust Rudkin with a penny of it. The last few transfer windows have been absolute disasters.

And we need to recruit the correct manager to motivate them and to build a side.

All ifs and buts unfortunately…

I’d love to keep Iheanacho. I think he’d rip up the Championship. What happens to Vardy will be interesting as well - tempted to think he’d rather try and get us back up than he a squad player at a Brentford or wherever.

But I think more importantly I want to hear a manager talk about the importance of recruiting the right characters - just like Pearson used to.

Some players are motivated to bust a gut even when they haven't got a club, others can't be motivated to get fit for autumn even when they know they'll be sacked if they don't.  It's much more dependent on the player than the pay.

Pay can be used as both a motivator and a reward.  I don't think we've got the balance right - too often we've used it as a reward - renewing players' contracts with higher wages at the same time as selling key players.  What we end up with is a rising wage bill and declining quality as those players pass their peak.

Add to that, an overpaid manager who talked the team down, a series of new signings who know full well that they'll never get another contract like they're on and won't move, and a few players who know that they'll likely double their salary next season regardless of what happens to Leicester City.

A lot of people are gonna say this about some of our players and it's not going to happen.

Championship is more fiesty, get up in their faces, our players don't like that.

Also at this point, I'll be happy IF we stay up BUT we'll be pretty screwed for next season

I don't think we paid players more because we thought it would motivate them more at the time it was seen as a necessity in order to try and achieve European places.

It went wrong because we signed players that weren't good enough to achieve those Euro spots and we under estimated the power and control that players now have over their contracts.

On top of this we had a manager who despite popular opinion didn't seem to be a very good people manager and was full of self interest.

Imagine being Souttar......can't get a game and sitting here thinking I've got another 5 years of this sh!t potentially. He will be more suited to the Championship and dare I say it Vertergaard would probably do a job. Pacy defence
