Sad News about a Leicester City Fan

Update from Muzzysgal off of foxestalk:

Hubby went armed with your messages to see Steve and he managed to read the first message himself before coming over a bit emotional (well, it was from Soho!). Hubby and his mum read out a few more messages to him before leaving them with him for him to look at later.

I've had to appoint myself the secretary of the 'Steve Smith Fan Club' (now there's a scary thought!) due to the phenomenal response we've had both locally and nationally for messages of support.

Our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who have taken the time to post a message.

I'm pleased to report that Steve has been able to sit up in a chair today and has also managed to say a couple of words too - very encouraging.

He still has a few more tests to come, but he is better today than he was yesterday, so let's all hope that he continues to make progress.

I'd also like to add that he received a visit from Peter Jones today too.

Also someones put a message up on the 606 froum

Thats good news, ive cared for people who have suffered strokes, mostly people older than Steve and most of them have gone on to make as good a recovery as they possibly can and lead very full and active lives. The good news is that he's still relatively young and he's improved a lot already its seems.

Another Message From Muzzysgal:

Steve's wife has asked me to post the following message on her behalf:

I am Steve's middle son, Matthew.I have read all the messages on the site and wanted to post my own. My daddy is the best daddy in the world and I love him very much. I miss him lots and I know he will get better soon and be back playing football with me. He is my superstar.

I am Ryan, Steve's oldest son. I am posting this message so my dad can read this when he is better. I miss him so much because there is no better dad in the world and want him to come home to play on the playstation with me.

I am Kathryn, Steve's wife. I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all the kind wishes. They mean so much and I know Steve would be absolutely astounded. He is the boys and my world and I know he will do his very best to come back from this.

Well this is my first post here, and no finer subject could I have chosen.

With the stupendous suppost of your family, and the positive thoughts of all on this board, you will and can get better.

I have been through this, its horrible, its frightening, its disorientating, its meant for other people, its something that you thought would never happen to you.......

But there is light at the end of the tunnel, and, my god, doesn`t the world seem a better place as you emerge into that light.

So have strength, take heart from all the love that surrounds you, be patient, do as you are told and take it slowly.....and then, slowly but surely tou will get better.

I`m not religious, but I will have a quiet prayer for you....if you want....and if not, I will have a quiet prayer that Forest keep on being losers!

Ian

Latest Update From the Fox:

Steve is now able to eat whatever he likes because he can swallow again.

His right side is still paralysed and the only word he can say is 'yes'.

He will remain where he is until Christmas and then hopefully he might be transferred to a more specialised unit.

I will continue to update on here, but Steve's recovery is going to be a very slow and gradual process. I will only report when I have something significant to tell you.

Apologies to those of you who have sent cards to Steve, but haven't been acknowledged. We do appreciate them. Steve's wife has decided to keep them all to one side for now until Steve is well enough to open them himself.

Thought you may like to know that the club are putting together a cd of messages from the players on the basis that a variety of sounds can help stimulate the brain.

It is just something it was agreed may help, just like us all on here we want to help in anyway we can

What a great gesture from the club!

That's great stuff, credit to the club.

Update from Muzzy'sgal:

Thought I'd update you all on Steve's progress before the chaos that is Christmas kicks in.

Steve is now able to stand unaided and can get in and out of bed by himself.

His eating is completely back to normal, with him preferring to be wheeled down to the canteen at lunchtimes to scoff sausage and chips rather than consume what is offered on the ward.

Progress with using his right arm and leg is "as expected" according to the doctors. In other words, he still has no use of them, but his physio is going well.

His speech is really the area that is causing most concern. Doctors have said that it may never return completely.

However, I cannot stress enough how early we are into the recovery process. It appears I was being a tad optimistic when I said to be thinking in terms of months.

The support that Steve's immediate family has received has been totally overwhelming. I'm sure it's reassuring for Steve to know that they are being well looked after.

Personally, I would like to thank everybody who has sent cards via my address. Steve has read them all and they really keep his spirits up.

Very special thanks to Ian Bason who has been marvellous with his support throughout and incredibly understanding.

I wish you all a very Happy Christmas!

Lisa

Thank you for transferring my posts from The Fox site over to here.

I've now registered on here and on another forum so that I can update anybody who's interested.

I always knew that Steve was a popular guy, but I didn't realise just how many good friends he has got.

Thanks to everybody who's been in touch and a Merry Christmas to you all!

Just to add my best wishes, and say, Steve, YOU WILL BE BACK!

My brother had a massive stroke at the age of 24. He is now 30 and has made a pretty much full revcovery. As Ian said earlier, who has been through this himself, it's something that happens to other people, right? Well, you're young, you're strong, you're brave, and you're already on the way back, so just keep going for it Steve. My brother was pretty much out of it for a year (it was a couple of months before he was able to swallow and at least six months before he could stand unaided), so you're already well ahead of his recovery.

Steve's family: If you'd like, I'm sure my brother (who still lives in Leicester unlike myself) would be glad to visit and provide a bit of inspiration - let me know.

Best wishes,

DesertFox

I hope that further progress can be made on a steady basis. What bad fortune it is to have a stroke at that age - just proofs that it can hit you anytime, especially as a man.

Nice to hear he is recovering fast enough and I'd like to hear more news about his current health status.

Best wishes to Steve and his family, get well again, enjoy the holidays and a very, very warm 2006!

And yes, you have more friends than you can imagine!
