The Finals

Recommended Posts

After getting a stealth launch before Christmas, The Finals has chugged along quietly going about its business with very little hard marketing but a really active developer putting out constant updates, content and balances.

Season 1 was a lot of fun but largely used as like a continuation of the beta.

Season 2 about to come on Thursday bringing a lot of new content for each specialisation. They're also promising a lot more promotion and expecting the player base to grow.

Any of you already playing? Any of you thinking of trying?

Personally think it's the most fun I've had in a shooter since the "classic" days of COD and, to a lesser extent, Battlefield before both got shit.

Really nice to have a solid, very well made and really fun FPS that isn't a ****ing BR or survival game.

I had a dabble around the initial release and enjoyed it, though the game show trappings didn't do much for me. The destruction in particular is genuinely pretty amazing and felt like a rare instance of genuine innovation in multiplayer shooters. That said, I found it very hard to come away from it thinking anything other than "this is fine and all but I really wish you lads were still making Battlefield instead".

Trailer looks fun mind and a big new injection of guns and gadgets may well see me having another look - one of the problems I had with it was that it felt like each class only had one or two weapons that were actually worth using, though I imagine three months or so of balancing and patches may well have changed that.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of Arc Raiders, which was initially meant to be their first release but was pushed back in favour of this and has since been retooled into an extraction shooter. Nobody else seems to be able to make one of those that appeals to a wide enough audience without also sacrificing the things that make stuff like Tarkov compelling.

I have played The Finals a lot since it came out, I really like it. All the classes play very differently and you can have a lot of fun with non-meta builds. Being able to significantly alter the cashout areas through destruction is amazing and it is always rewarding when you get into a really intense fight for the end of a cashout and then survey the scene afterwards. It isn't perfect - good definitely use more maps and some things did get massively abused - C4 missiles in particular - but the developers have done a good job with balance fixes.

Looking forward to the new update on Thursday a lot.

Yeah nukes have almost vanished since the last tweak to be fair. Still a few people chucking them around but a lot more risky because you have to pop them very short range.

Mostly I just use the red canisters raw to get through walls.

What the **** am I supposed to do, looks complicated

It really isn't. It's mostly a generic (in a good way) shooter, remember it's made by guys who left DICE, it's all the devs that made the good Battlefield games. The main difference is how immensely interactable and destructable the environment is.

If you're going to play casual there are three main modes:

Quick Cash: this is the most similar mode to the competitive tournaments, it is an objective based mode where you take the objective to a location and then have to defend it for a short time while other people try and steal it. Until you learn the ropes, just follow your team mates, stick together and hope they're not useless.

Bank It: this is the most "solo-friendly" mode, it is the closest thing to team deathmatch and MOST players treat it that way. People really, really don't care that much about the objective or winning and losing in Bank It. I would recommend you start with this mode for a couple of hours to get comfortable. What you're SUPPOSED to do is collect coins that pop out of either vaults than spawn randomly on the map or other players when you kill them and then go and put them in cash-out machines dotted around the arena.

Power Shift - this is a new mode for season 2. There's a platform in the middle of the map, if your team is standing on it it goes in your direction, if the other team is standing on it it goes in their direction. To win you have to get it to your end of the map or have it closer to your end before the time runs out. This is a bit 50/50 in terms of whether people actually try and win or whether they just go for kills. It's a fairly easy mode to get in to because the platform makes it so you know exactly where 90% of people will be. But it's probably a bit chaotic if you don't fully understand the game yet.
