Leicester's free beer festival Brew Beat to return this summer

A free craft beer and cocktail festival is returning to Leicester this summer. Organisers say the vibrant event will showcase the city at its best and bring in thousands of visitors.

The Brew Beat festival will return over three days at Leicester’s Jubilee Square next month in a celebration of craft beer, cocktails, live music and more. The family friendly event, which is running for the fourth time, attracted more than 7,000 people last year, with organisers hoping to bring in even more this time round.

The free-to-attend event will have its drinks supplied by this year’s partner, The Real Ale Classroom, who are set to bring a wide range of craft beers, cocktails, gins, alcoholic slushies, mocktails and soft drinks to the event. Ian Martin, co-owner of The Real Ale Classroom, said: “The range and quality of craft beer available has exploded in recent years and we are really looking forward to showcasing a diverse selection of beer styles from some of the finest craft brewers in Britain. I believe there is a beer to suit all tastes and a beer festival is wonderful way to try new beers and give your tastebuds a treat.”

Brew Beat is funded by BID Leicester and has support from sponsors including De Montfort University, PPL PRS and Octopus Energy. It is also a partnership effort with three Leicester businesses as Arch Creative and HQ Recording have worked alongside the Real Ale Classroom to bring the event to life this year.

The festival is not just about booze either as it will be a musical showcase of all genres. The acts, which are yet to be confirmed, will feature both Leicestershire artists and others from further afield to bring a great backing track to the event.

Simon Jenner, BID Leicester Director said: “This year will see a huge range of musical talent, craft beers and tasty food from Leicester and far beyond, with something for everyone to enjoy.

“The festival will be a vibrant showcase of what Leicester has to offer, helping to drive footfall into the city centre. We expect this year to see the summer out in true Brew Beat style, which is always a lot of fun.”

Brew Beat will take place at Leicester’s Jubilee Square from Friday, August 30 to Sunday, September 1, with music running until 10pm on Friday and Saturday and 7pm on Sunday. The festival will operate on an one-in, one-out policy once capacity is reached.

Full details on vendors and entertainment will be announced in due course. More information can be found on the Brew Beat website.

There will be lots of fun at city centre locations including Town Hall Square

Families looking for a low-cost day out this summer can find things to do in Leicester’s children’s centres, parks, libraries and museums. There's plenty to do and most of it costs nothing or very little.

As schools prepare to close for the long break, the city council is getting ready to open its venues for a summer of affordable fun, offering children the chance to explore a heritage building, ride on a steam train, hook ducks from the Town Hall Square fountain, or enjoy the sound of a brass band in one of Leicester’s parks.

Ideas for dozens of free and low-cost things to do in Leicester during the school holidays – organised by Leicester City Council and other partner organisations – are listed on the council's online holiday guide.

READ MORE: Your chance to win a share of £450,000 for your local community – and a £500 prize for yourself

Highlights of the six-week-long programme include Roman-themed free family activities in venues across the Cultural Quarter on Saturday, July 13, a family-friendly guided bike tour through the Glenfield Tunnel on Monday, July 15, weekly Railway Days at Abbey Pumping Station each Tuesday and a fun day inspired by Leicester’s larger-than-life legend Daniel Lambert at Newarke Houses Museum on Wednesday, July 17.

There’s also a Magical Gardens craft day at Belgrave Hall on Wednesday, July 24, a Cops ‘n’ Robbers fun day at the Guildhall – Leicester’s first police station – on Thursday, July 25, a Heritage Sunday on July 28, when buildings including the ancient Magazine and the Great Hall of Leicester Castle will be open to the public, a Summer Garden Party for all the family on Wednesday, July 31, at Belgrave Hall and a Teddy Bears’ Picnic at Newarke Houses Museum on Monday, August 5.

Young children can enjoy an afternoon of storybook-inspired crafts and activities at Belgrave Hall’s Story Book Forest on Wednesday, August 7, there’s magical fun at the Guildhall’s Wizard School on Thursday, August 8, youngsters can meet the beekeeper at Wings & Wildflowers at Newarke Houses Museum on Saturday, August 17, while all the family can enjoy a fun day at Abbey Pumping Station on Sunday, August 18, with vintage vehicles, craft stalls, rides on the steam locomotive, refreshments from the café, and drinks from a gin and cocktail bar.

From Monday, July 15, until Friday, August 23, young children and families can enjoy free activities at Leicester’s children, young people and family centres. The Get Up & Go programme will include lots of indoor and outdoor fun, such as skipping, circus skills and giant games, as well as a chance to have a go on the smoothie and spin art bikes.

Times vary at each family centre venue so people are advised to check the timetable at families.leicester.gov.uk or to call their local children’s centre

And there's more. Town Hall Square will host Mini Playdays on Wednesdays throughout the summer, with giant outdoor games, story-time, arts & crafts and a dedicated area for babies. Mini Playdays will take place from 11am to 2pm, with the big one – National Playday – transforming Town Hall Square into a giant playground on Wednesday, August 7, from 11am to 3pm.

A free Summer Extravaganza on Victoria Park on Wednesday, August 21, will bring the Get Up & Go programme to a close. Leicester’s libraries will be promoting a summer of reading, with a brand new Summer Reading Challenge.

‘Marvellous Makers’ – which runs until Sunday, September 15 – challenges youngsters to visit their local library three times and read at least six books over the summer. In return, they’ll pick up stickers, collectibles and a certificate when they complete the challenge.

A free family fun session, with games, puzzles, crafts and stories, will also take place at each of Leicester’s libraries between July 22 and August 15. Families can find out when their local library will be hosting its Fun Afternoon here.

Some libraries will also be hosting additional workshops and activities, which are free to attend but must be booked in advance. Activities include Simple Science, Lego Coding and National Space Centre workshops.

A number of free sports “masterclasses” and pop-up events are taking place at Highcross from this weekend. Ahead of the start of the Paris Olympics, two weeks on Friday, Highcross in Leicester is holding masterclasses on football, basketball and yoga.

Alongside these sessions, shoppers are encouraged to test out their own sporting skills on the centre’s themed pop-ups, also found in St Peter’s Square, which include a mini outdoor running track, football nets for penalty shoot-outs and table tennis.

Visitors will be required to supply their own paddles and footballs for these pop-ups. Beginning today (Saturday, July 13), the first masterclass will be a football freestyle session held by professional freestyler Stephen Gray, who will showcase technique lessons and trick tips.

This runs from 11am until 4pm. On Wednesday (July 17) from 1pm-4pm, coaches from the Leicester Riders Foundation will be at the centre to “give shoppers the chance to take part in a fun shoot-out so they can perfect their jump shots and ace their alley-oops”, a spokesperson for Highcross said.

Finally on Friday (July 19), the team behind the Ufit Thrive yoga and pilates studio in Leicester will show shoppers a number of “breathing, balance and posture techniques”. This session will run from 1pm until 2pm.

Jo Tallack, senior general manager at Highcross, said: “Since the middle of June, the country has been gripped by the sheer joy of sport – from the Euros across Germany, to Wimbledon in London. And we’ve seen the people of Leicester swept up in the action.

“So we wanted to bring some of that fitness fever closer to home by giving them an opportunity to get active this summer. We’re delighted to be able to bring together a whole host of sporting experts, with masterclasses in a range of disciplines, from football and basketball, right through to yoga and pilates – so there’s something here for everyone, no matter your age, skills or passion.”

Abbey Pumping Station will be having train rides

Families looking for a low-cost day out this half-term can enjoy dozens of activities in Leicester that won’t break the bank. Leicester City Council’s guide to half-term fun lists events organised by Leicester’s libraries, museums and children’s centres, as well as free activities taking place elsewhere in the city.

During their week off school - which begins on Monday, February 17, in Leicester - children and young people will be able to delve into a cabinet of curiosity, try their hand at stand-up comedy, take a ride on a steam locomotive or join a Lego coding club.

On Saturday, February 15, the team from Leicester Museums will be bringing their Cabinet of Curiosity to Beaumont Shopping Centre. Visitors can drop in any time between 11am and 4pm to discover fascinating items from Leicester’s natural history and technology collections.

Also on Saturday, young cyclists aged 16 and over can find out more about the Leicester playwright Joe Orton. A nine-mile guided bike ride takes in the area where the writer grew up and the theatre that inspired his passion for drama.

On Monday, February 17, any child who wants to learn how to be a dog’s best friend can join a free event at Beaumont Leys Library. Organised by The Dogs’ Trust, the session runs from 10am to 11am and is aimed at children aged 7 to 11. Places must be booked in advance by calling the library on 0116 454 3270. No dogs will be involved in the session.

Later that day, at Highfields Library, there will be a free event inspired by David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny. Those aged seven and over can join a Simple Science session and create an alarm system to protect the Crown Jewels. The Gangsta Granny sessions will be repeated at Fosse Library on Tuesday, February 18, and at Belgrave Library on Wednesday, February 19. Places must be booked in advance by contacting the libraries directly.

On Tuesday (February 18), Newarke Houses Museum hosts a Puppets’ Playtime - with tickets costing £4 - while those looking for outdoor activities should head for the Abbey Pumping Station, where the steam train on the narrow gauge railway will be offering rides. Admission to the pumping station’s Railway Day – which runs from 11.30am to 4pm on Tuesday – is free of charge, with train rides costing 50p.

The Haymarket shopping centre has got lots going on for youngsters on Wednesday. As part of its Blast Off To Fun event, there will be free space-themed crafts and an alien walkabout from 11am to 3pm, with activities provided by the National Space Centre. There will also be King Richard III-themed crafts for those aged three and over.

Leicester Museum & Art Gallery in New Walk is inviting families to make their own museum in a box on Wednesday (February 19), while the Central Library is running a six-week Lego Coding Club for those aged eight to 12, starting on Wednesday. Booking for both events is required.

On Thursday (February 20) it’s the Guildhall’s annual ‘snowball’ fight – part of the museum’s Frosty Fun Day. Whatever the weather, there’ll be wintry-themed arts and crafts between 11am and 3pm. Tickets are £4 when bought in advance.

Children who like to play with clay can drop in to Leicester Cathedral on both Tuesday and Thursday and make their very own mythical grotesque. Aimed at those aged three and over, the craft sessions are free of charge.

On both Thursday and Friday (February 21) young people can join a zine making workshop at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery, working with professional artists to create a Leicester Legends zine. Part of the Tell Tall Tales heritage project, the free drop-in sessions run from 2pm to 4pm.

All week, there’ll be lots going on at Leicester’s libraries. Free activities include Undersea Crafts at Aylestone Library, The Aliens are Coming at Westcotes Library, Fabulous Frivolous Fun at the Pork Pie Library, Ramadan and Eid-themed crafts at St Matthew’s Library, Make a Dreamcatcher at St Barnabas Library, Year of the Snake crafts at Rushey Mead Library and fun paper crafts at Belgrave Library.

And all week, children and young people can get involved in the UK Kids’ Comedy Festival by telling their favourite jokes at libraries across the city. Joke Spots take place at Highfields Library on Monday, Aylestone Library on Tuesday, Braunstone and Hamilton libraries on Wednesday, Beaumont Leys Library on Thursday, New Parks Library on Friday and Belgrave Library on Saturday, February 22.

Assistant city mayor Vi Dempster said: “Keeping children busy over the half-term break doesn’t have to cost the earth, as we’ve got plenty of free and low-cost activities in our libraries and museums. I hope families will find our online guide useful and will enjoy discovering the many free educational, creative and activity-based events taking place in Leicester this half term.”

All the activities taking place at Leicester’s libraries can be found on the Leicester City Council website.
