England Euro 24 Squad

Admit it's probably a bit petty and bitter of me but can't help but feel it sticks in my craw that in a period where we produced 6 top 10 finishes, 3 top 5 finishes and won the title and the cup we could barely get 1 player in the England squad. Now Palace play well for 2 months and make up half the squad?

I actually think we did ok, although I still think Marc Albrighton should have got to a squad during 2015/16. Just looked it up and we've had the following players get a cap since that season;

 

James Justin (2022), 1 Cap

Harvey Barnes (2020), 1 Cap

James Maddison (2019-2023), 3 Caps

Ben Chilwell (2018-2019), 11 Caps

Harry Maguire (2017-2019), 20 Caps

Danny Drinkwater (2016), 3 Caps

Jamie Vardy (2015-2018), 26 Caps

 

Then I'm sure Demarai Gray got tothe bench the game that was at the KP. Not too bad really.

Always harder for attacking options to make the squad.

Forgot about Maguire tbh  yeah Justin would probably have made the Euro 2021 squad if not for injury.

 

Drinkwater being overlooked for Euro 2016 was ridiculous, could argue that was the moment his career started going downhill.

Definitely, the game that year against the Netherlands when he was MoM I thought he was in for sure, looked so comfortable.

defo agree with you there about Drinkwater how can you play so well and not even make the squad ,he opted for wilshire who had been injured for most of the season if i recall

Albrighton deserved a call-up even if stylistically I'm not sure we'd have got the best out of him.

 

Maddison situation was ridiculous as we all know. The only one I feel a real gripe about though is Vardy.

 

Criminally underused when he was the most clinical striker in the country. Always felt he could have been our Benzema, Muller or Klose at big tournaments. That ace

 

But Hodgson and Southgate could barely look past their own nose

Expert Neville... yeah so quality didn't half pay off when we got knocked out by Iceland in the round of sixteen.
