No not really, sounds like it has been his best season by far though.  So why not play him on the left up front?  Is Palmer better?  Is Foden really better than Bellingham or Rice in the middle for England?

Because he doesn't play on the left for Man City. Him and Bellingham have basically played similar positions and both excelled this season so for me they both play CAM in behind Kane, with Rice at CDM. For me I'd sacrifice Palmer not playing in the middle and stick him on the left, Saka on the right.

In that formation you waste Rice as the holding midfielder, he is WAY better than that.

A midfield trio of Rice - Foden - Bellingham offers far more attacking intent and flare.

Absolutely no need to field a midfield trio of Mainoo - Rice - Bellingham, especially in the Group Stage.

Rashford not going is indeed a surprise. Even though he has been poor i thought he was southgate's faves

He and Grealish paid for poor seasons .

Don’t need the press conference as everything gets leaked anyway !

Good to see Southgate rolling the dice a little.  No Henderson, Rashford, Sterling is quite a big deal for him.  I suppose Slabhead staying at home is a wish too far :)

BBC saying Grealish is in

Fair enough.

Might be one who could miss out eventually?

True, not one I had down to go and think there's others in the LW spot that have had better seasons e.g. Gordon

Maguire’s always been good for England?

In the group stage we could get away with the midfield 3 of Rice, Foden, Bellingham but against anyone half decent Rice gets completely overun. Man City manage it with Rodri but their defence is strong with 1on1 battles.

You'd have to ask Bellingham to drop deeper, which I think he is capable of to be fair.

Sky Sports News are saying that GS will announce a 33-man initial squad so I would imagine pretty much everyone not already mentioned as not being in will be in unless he has another surprise or 2 up his sleeve.

Indeed, hence playing Mainoo behind :)

I would take;

Pickford, Henderson and whichever English keeper has the best penalty saving record.

Trent, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Dunk, Tomori, Branthwaite, Shaw, Trippier.

Rice, Jude, Foden, Gallagher, Mainoo, Wharton, Maddison.

Saka, Kane, Watkins, Toney, Grealish, Gordon, Bowen.

Looks as though Southgate has gone for players in the 33 who he feels he can easily drop and not take. Kind of makes sense, no point naming Rashford, Henderson etc if not going to take them.

By England international standards, you have to have been pretty doggo to not make the 33 man initial squad...

Or indeed been injured for half the season, moved to Saudi or not playing for your club.

Even he has realized that Mount, Sterling and Rashford are just not near the level at the moment

I’m shocked, Southgate has found his balls and dropped his favourites. Whatever next, attacking exciting football surely not!

I thought I had my squad and line up sorted but then saw Palmer and to a slightly lesser degree Gordon's names which makes me start over again!

Trent Alexander-Arnold's potential dual role is another factor, we are in a position now where we have more than 11 obvious first choices and 14 or 15 may be started over the course of the matches as horses for courses (no Kane insult intended). It's a shame that Grealish and to a degree Madders aren't arriving at it in peak form but thankfully the form of Foden, Saka and emergence of Palmer should compensate and they could still both play a part, but with Kane up top and Bellingham being a goal threat that's plenty more excitement than Safegate can cope with.

One place is nailed on - Sticker book says our own Luke Thomas will proudly claim a place in the squad over Bell Chilbell, congrats Luke :appl:, well deserved
