AI music

So I was in the pool yesterday listening to a play list on YouTube.  It started to add a few random songs towards the end  which is fine. It happens. A song came on that I very quickly realized I was going to like- it was a version of The Sound Of Silence that I hadn’t heard before, almost like a blues version. I actually played it 3-4 times. After I got out the pool I looked into it a bit more and I highly suspect it is an AI song, and now I feel quite dirty on the inside!

 

im torn.  On principle I feel I should kick it to the curb… but I liked it!

 

 

Anyone had anything similar happen? Or anyone have a general opinion on AI music?

You've clearly missed all the fun we've been having in the BSLB podcast thread! @Anonymous F.O.X. created an intro to the podcast based on the Baz Luhrman Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen song, and has since gone on to create many more song parodies, song parodies from lyrics written by other users in the thread, original tracks and much more.

There are few things more depressing than AI music. One of the incredible things about music is that it is a person's experiences, talent and creativity rolled into a piece of art. It's all very romantic but I love knowing that there's a human behind a song and there's a story of how the song can to be. I really hope AI is broadly rejected (preferably banned), but I won't hold my breath.

I've spent 20+ years learning how to produce and am now at the point where I can call myself semi-professional.

 

And now - along with my many of my peers and collaborators - we find out our songs have been scraped to train these AIs whilst we battle for listeners because so much of this garbage is being uploaded every single day. 

 

It's fine for a bit of fun, but keep this slop off DSPs. 

 

Don't get me started on the vapid, deluded shit-peddlers populating AI music or Suno communities all desperately trying to convince themselves they're musicians or they possess some sort of skill.

I've pretty active across social media within my genre and I see AI prompters try to market their product all the time, and they're rightly met with absolute venom. They'll use AI visuals, AI artwork. The lack of self-awareness is staggering. 

 

This stuff is absolutely rejected by the vast majority of people, anecdotally. Thankfully an increasing amount of distributors don't allow AI music, and DSPs require disclosure. Tidal was the first platform to block AI from earning royalties.

I was just about to mention this! Tidal also pays far better royalties to artists than the other streaming platforms, as well as having better audio quality.
