It seems Coppell picked him up from Cork city for £80,000. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't we still have a connection with Cork city - hence Damien Delaney. The academy was one of the things which took a fair few cutbacks at the time and has only just been brought back into the limelight in my opinion.
