Cat Burger Posted 25 January 2006 Posted 25 January 2006 Earth: Past The Point Of No Return by UPI Wire Jan 16, 2006 LONDON, Jan. 16, 2006 (UPI) -- Renowned scientist James Lovelock says he believes the world has passed the point of no return for climate change, and civilization is unlikely to survive. Thirty years ago Lovelock conceived the idea that Earth possesses a planetary-scale control system he named Gaia, which keeps our environment fit for life, The Independent reported Monday. But now he believes mankind's abuse of the environment has made climate change insoluble and life on Earth will never be the same again. In an extraordinarily pessimistic new assessment published in Monday's Independent, Lovelock suggests efforts to counter global warming cannot succeed, and that, in effect, it is already too late. Lovelock now believes Earth and human society face nearly complete disaster, and sooner than nearly anybody realizes. He writes, "Before this century is over, billions of us will die, and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic, where the climate remains tolerable." The People's Hero Posted 25 January 2006 Posted 25 January 2006 Earth is such a stupid name for a planet. Planet Zoidberg would be my choice of name, were we to rename the planet (which I think we should).

Rincewind Posted 26 January 2006 Posted 26 January 2006 By the end of the century I shall be around 150 years old, blind, suffering from arthiritis, impotent, out of work and a pensioner trying live off the state pension relying on the winter fuel grants and free TV licence to exist a daily meagre unhappy life. City will stll be fighting for relegation in one division or another. The Kop and L1 will still be arguing as to who sings loudest. Derby fans will still inbreed and shag sheep . Forest fans will still hug trees. So taking all that into consideration I will accept my demise and reflect on a long and fruitful life.
