Extraordinary Breastfeeding - Channel 4 - 1st Feb - 9pm

A group of women discuss their decision to continue breastfeeding for as long as their children want. One mother still meets the needs of her seven-year-old daughter, and her eldest has asked if she can be breastfed as a present for her 10th birthday. Meanwhile, 38-year-old Sophie is tandem-feeding two-year-old twins Zac and Molly on demand, and is feeling the strain (T)

Not wishing to sound too much like a conservative prude, but I witnessed this actually happen in public....

About 6-7 years ago, I was on a day out at Lindisfarne Priory. Standing outside the gift-shop (woh, rock'n'roll!), me and the (now ex-) girlfriend watched in amazement as a young girl of probably 5 or 6, certainly of school age, went up to her mother and said she was hungry.

Her mum bent over, lifted up her top and the girl just helped herself. In public, just like that, about 15 feet from where we stood.

I'm not arsed about women breast-feeding in public - there's more important things to worry about - and the flash of a nork or two never hurt anyone....

...But the sight of this young girl just going up to her mum and demanding a swift half on draught in broad daylight was completely and utterly bizarre, to me anyway.

i thought it was wrong, children of 7yrs old should not still be suckin on their mothers breasts!

dont care about breast feeding in general though, but rather they didnt do it in restaurants!!

I'm not knocking it - it just took me by surprise. Apparently the W.H.O. recommend that mums breastfeed kids until the age of two.

I've lead a sheltered life. :D

I was bottle fed from birth, and it did me no harm...shame it was vodka, really.

The mum was saying it does no harm and nothing but good comes from it..... BUT..... did anyone else get the feeling that the children seemed slightly warped!!!!

Also, what if it was a boy she was still breast feeding!!?? I know it would of fooked me up.

breast feeding past the age of 6 months is pointless as the only use breast milk has is to protect babies from infections and diseases until they are old enough to have the injections.

people who breast feed after that like shown on this tv programme are actually putting there childrens health at risk in the long term.

I haven't got a problem with breastfeeding, but a child of 5/6, just isn't right, feel it could cause a lot of problems in later life. Breasts are for babies and grown men lol:thumbup:

Who said it's 6 months?

But I agree with you, past a certain age (say 1 year max), breastfeeding seems unnatural under normal circumstances...

Because they don't care what happens to the breastfeeding women! (e.g. teeth etc)
