Caretaker manager Dave Bassett confirmed on Monday evening that Kevin Harper has returned to Portsmouth.

The 28-year-old winger originally joined the Foxes on a one-month loan spell in September - but that period was extended until November to allow the player to recover from a calf injury.

Harper made his comeback for the Foxes in City's 1-1 draw with Coventry at the weekend before being replaced in the second half by James Scowcroft.

But the Scotsman has now returned to Fratton Park as the Foxes could not guarantee him first team football.

Bassett said: "I had a good chat with Kevin today and I told him that I couldn't guarantee him first team football so he has returned to Portsmouth.

"I have also spoken to Harry Redknapp down there and they are short on a few players at the moment so we came to the conclusion that it would be better if he went back there.

"I thanked Kevin for all his help. It was just unfortunate for him that he got injured so soon after joining us"

bassett out already??? lol, i don't agree with this either. I haven't seen him play but what all the reports say, as petrescu said, he was the best player on sat, whats up with this decision?

Pathetic decision! Bassett - what on earth is he playing at?? Harper was our best attacking player at Coventry and looked like he would create something. This is shocking. :angry:

Posted it on another thread...but Harper might have gone back so we can afford a left winger...I wouldn't be surprised given that Wilcox is out for the rest of the season...either way I guess its Slow-croft back on the wing...Stick him up front, Plllllleeeeeaaaase Harry

Great so an actual winger is sent back, even though we are having trouble on the right flank with no real wingers except Gillespie! Maybe Basset has decided to find someone else for this position, maybe a Basset loan??

So Wilcox is out for the season, Morris is never fit, Canero is out, Scowcroft is a striker and Gillespie is mostly useless but we can't guarantee a lively, energetic, dangerous looking winger a place......suuuuure Bassett. Just like when we couldn't guarantee Keown a place in the side yet strangely when he came back he went straight in knocking the 'captain' right out of the squad... <_<

Also didn't like what Davies was saying on the Moan-In today, the things he was saying about Bassett were exactly the same things he said about Micky (changing 'young' to 'experienced'). He better not of made a decision already... :(

Also, Birch mentioned on Century tonight when the news was 'broken' to him (he was as baffled as the rest of us), that he'd spoken to Harper at about 1pm and he seemed really keen about his future with us.

I think we should chill...whoever comes in is likely to change the set up/some of the players anyway, if we react this way to everyone/anyone who is in charge...NO ONE will want to manage us.

I don't agree with the decision, but we must bear in mind that Bassett is temporary...we can't react this way to everyone...it is not going to gain us any points with potential future managers...who, based on our reaction will probably run screaming in the opposite direction.

That's the point - Bassett is temporary, and he's making daft changes like this.

Besides, I don't think potential managers would be put out off from a few outbursts on a forum. ;)

You are right, he shouldn't be making decisions over playing personnel. But if he axed Morris would we complain? If he had stood by the Keown decision made by MA would we not complain? Just playing devils advocate Scowy...I agree with you on this one, Harper was class. But then I have never got what I want...Freund for example!

I think what I'm trying to say is that I wouldn't complain with Bassett dropping the passengers...class like Harper is a different matter, but at the same time we shouldn't cry (insert managers name) OUT every time a decision doesn't agree with us.

To be fair, that's always been the case - All sets of fans are the same, and will react the same to any baffling decision like this. Just aswell we have a forum to vent our frustrations on. <_<

I really can't get my head around this one. I'm gutted. :(
