Jonbluefox9 Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 Tried to swallow an antibiotic tablet today and it just wouldn't go down. I want to know if anyone else has trouble swallowing pills and has anyone mastered the skill of swallowing them later on in their life after struggling to begin with?

Sounds painful. I just got the pill right to the back of my tongue with a mouthful of water and nearly choked on it. I jumped up, spat the water out and fortunately what remained of the pill landed in the glass of water. It does dissolve so I drank it instead but swallowing it whole removes the taste factor.
holly Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 possibly the strangest post i have seen on here! but yeh i can!
Strokes Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 fock me, don't ever get involved in taking ecstacy if you can't swallow pills, they taste **** horrible when you chew them.
andyh1884 Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 Used to struggle, no problems now - 2 at a times if necessary
Jonbluefox9 Posted 29 March 2006 Author Posted 29 March 2006 I had problems until I was about 12. Thanks. That makes me feel better.
Flemmish Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 I never took any pills until I was about 15/16, until then I always had the liquid stuff When I eventually took paracetamol, I could not swallow them whatsoever so decided to chrush them and gulp it down with water. Now it is easy for me to swallow them, I think it was a case that I didn't want to and I was trying to hard to swallow them. Should hopefully get easier

I think your problem might be the actual pill, if it does dissolve then when you pop it in your mouth it will stick to your tongue and the water will make it fizz on it. You should start with small vitamin tablets using either capsule or caplets (these have a sugary coating to stop them sticking). Then when necessary you can eventually start to go on to bigger and better things, like your anti-biotics (some are HUGE!!)
The Don Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 Can swallow pills easy. 2 at a time wi no drink. Only trouble is if you do it that way, they can get stuck at the back of your throat and then no matter how much water you have after, you cannot get it to go down!!
Strokes Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 I just love throwing pills down my throat, double dropping is the best.

TrickyTrev Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 When I was a really young kid I couldn't do it. Once I had got over the metnal block I was fine. I can now do 2 at a time without a drink.
filbertway Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 Yeh I can swallow pills, i feel so good about myself for it

Well I think these are huge but maybe that's because I'm not used to taking tablets. My Dad said that they're quite a nice shape but I beg to differ. They look like something you'd give to a horse. My older sister's just got home and said they're about the biggest she's seen. Mine are white. That picture isn't the best way of showing how big they are though. They are about as thick as two £1 coins on top of each other. Basically I'm trying to come up with reasons why I'm struggling to swallow them.
Libertine Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 Used to take me ages to be able to swallow them, I just wolf 'em down now.

Don't worry I wasn't able to for a long time, I'm sure it's psychological. And everyone thinks you are strange for not being able to. The way I managed to was when I went to China. I had to take malaria tablets for 14 days straight and after the first few days it just starts to happen. I'm sure soon you will be able to

Just had my second of the day. I decided to take things back to basics and chop the big pill into smaller pieces. I was thinking about it and if you're not used to swallowing them then it's not going to be easy to swallow the big ones straight away. I've built my confidence up now because I've manged to swallow a big pill (in little pieces) so hopefully by the time I reach number 28 I'll be able to do a whole in one. I'll keep you all informed. Last one of the day at 10 pm tonight. I got quite bad stomach cramps after the first one but not the runs that the doc had told me to expect. If Channel 4 had been warned they could have done a reality TV show on me.
Bluefoxtim Posted 29 March 2006 Posted 29 March 2006 trust me on this one! wrap it up in bread, for a few times, then take the bread off then you will be able to swallow it. I had the same problem
