Westerby Cup Final Match Thread

Recommended Posts

Coalville looked rather lost in the first half. LC scored two goals in quick sucession to take a 2-0 lead. The Ravens played a lot better in the second half and the first goal they scored gave them a lot of confidence. Coalville scored late in the game to send it to extra-time.

The extratime was all Leicester. Coalville simply ran out of steam. Leicester hit the bar twice and missed a number of chances. Dodds scored with about 10 minutes left in the 2nd extra time. Leicester had poor finishing throughout the game, which kept Coalville hanging around.

Well done to Coalville though.... played an excellent second half.

Dodds Hat-Trick Crowns Cup Win

Leicester City claimed the Westerby Challenge Cup with a 3-2 victory at the Walkers Stadium, but Coalville Town took them to the wire.

Predatory striker Louis Dodds (pictured) had already threatened to open the scoring, dispossessing a Coalville defender and forcing the visiting goalkeeper to stand his ground bravely to make the block, before he gave City the lead on the quarter hour. The Academy Player of the Year would only have to wait another two minutes to find the back of an empty net with the Ravens' stopper stranded out of his goal.

Dodds' second to double City's advantage came in the 20th minute, finishing with a precise flick from the outside of his right boot.

Coalville had looked dead and buried at the interval, but to their credit the Midland Alliance League side fought hard in the second half. Having got one back just before the hour mark, the visitors thought they had pulled level ten minutes later but had their strike ruled out for a foul following a good save from Alex Cisak.

The Foxes had several chances to regain their two goal cushion yet were made to pay for not taking their chances when with two minutes left of normal time, Town curled a corner into the box and a free header was redirected in for an equaliser, much to the delight of the travelling supporters.

As the final moments of the 90 ticked by, Leicester came agonisingly close to snatching the win. Seconds after Levi Porter had been denied what looked to be a fair claim to a penalty, Andy King's diving header struck the post.

The game went into extra time with both sides still intent on attacking. It wasn't until City had again struck the woodwork that Dodds would seal the victory. After a barrage of shots on the Coalville goal, Dodds floated his effort over the 'keeper and into the top corner to put Leicester's name on the cup.
