if i have worked it out correctly and argentina win the group england need to top the group as it is the only way to avoid argentina in the quarters;and will germany sooner meet england in the second round to avoid the sams fate?

We're gonna have to meet them sometime! If we're realistic about winning the world cup - we're going to have defeat Brazil, Argentina etc.

Perfectly said Bert.

I guess if we want to win it, then we shouldnt be fearful of *any* other team at all.

i think the pundits will be picking up on the big picture soon; yes it looks like the best way to dodge the argiesfor england and germany is for us to play each other in 2nd round game 3

In all fairness, i thought the scoreline flattered the Argies, yes they played quality possesion football but they didn't deserve to win 6-0, the fact that S+M, to quote a commentator "didn't belive they could win" and were very lacklustre all game, helped this, as soon as they scored their first goal, they're heads dropped and got more and more frustrated, which made them lose concentration, which left massive gaps all over the place. I don't dear anyone, we're good enough to win this without a doubt.

Did you actually watch the match?

Argentina we're brilliant. If England meet them on that form and play like they did against T&T you can forget about winning for another 4 years.

I'm praying we win the group... I'm getting married on the 24th at 3pm, so no way will I be able to watch a gamee at 4pm.. Nor will my mates, so to retain any popularity whatsoever, I need England to play on the Sunday, which means winning the group.

I will be supporting Germany to beat Ecuador. They will want to as you said to avoid the Argies. Awesome performace today.

Congratulations and I hope they do for your sake. :D:D:D:):P I have to ask, what are you doing getting married during a World Cup.:unsure::whistle::ph34r:

When we play a team that isn't completely focused on jsut defending and will actually try and attack us, I think thats when we will see the best.

We can beat anyone :D

you may have a point here perhaps germany would sooner finish second and play either sweden or england in 2nd round 3 game where a quarter with portugal holland would be likely

yes i think thats how it would pan out ; i think germany will view england/ sweden as equal opponents and will be more pleased to meet either in 2nd round game 3 ; time will tell ;)

This thread = typical English sporting attitude

I bet the likes of Brazil and France are sitting their with their predictor calculators working out their route to the final and who to avoid.

Play to beat anyone and everyone ffs. No wonder we never win anything

we do win things but a certain amount of strategy is needed

ever heard the phrase "keeping your powder dry"

That's not strategy though is it?

You should go into every game wanting to win irrespective of who you play next game

So say Germany come second in their group.... You want us to ''strategise'' and lose on purpose to Sweden?

Win all your games, that's the only strategy you need

no because that would put us on course to meet argentina in the quarters ; its only germany that can benefit from losing their game meeting either us or sweden as group winners in 2nd round 3

I doubt there's a team in the competition with a game plan like that, It'd be all guess work, they have no idea how the other games that will affect them are going to pan out and so the best option is to go out there and win. Winning breeds confidence and you certainly don't want to go into the 2nd round with a poor display and a defeat behind you.

If anything a team may not put out it's strongest side but it would still be a world class side going out to win the match.

It amazes me at times that people dream up these conspiracy theories

The thing is though, only one team wins the world cup (funnily enough).

Coming runner-up is just as good as going out in the first round IMO, most teams (excluding Angolia etc who play for national pride) come here to win the tournament. So if you come second, you've failed, I don't believe in this 'heroic failure syndrome', our players are way too good to expect us JUST to put up a good fight.

So who cares if we play the Argies in the quarters or the final? More than likely we will play them... or someone equal in quality plenty before the final.

We're not just going to be handed the world cup, look at the recent finals, Germany V Brazil, Brazil v France.

The commentators on ITV get on my t1ts, every game they analyse the effect of each game on groups and more than likely relate it to England. One thing they are forgetting and taking for granted is England getting that far. Maybe if we just concentrated on winning games (like the top teams do) and not crying on each others shoulders about how good other teams are we may win!

it would hardly be described as a conspiracy theory to try and avoid the most dangerous looking opponents;england of course have to try and win to top their group to diminish the liklihood of meeting argentina whereas germany could decide it would be better to finish second

[i'm not just picking on you macbeth the majority of England fans agree with you] but why would Germany or any other team looking to win the tournament want to avoid a team? If they think we will beat them, then it will be just as good to lose to us in the quarters (or whatever) than in the final, either way they will not win the world cup. It's a negative attitude to take, England have IMO the best group of 11 players in the tournament, just beat whoever is put infront of us!

well; for the same reason that lots of knockout competitions are seeded by the organisers to try to keep the most likely looking finalists apart; ok its not an exact science and doesn't always work like it should but it would be ridiculous if hewitt/federer etc met in earlier rounds

The Equador game isn't going to be a stroll in the park anyway

......but do you honestly believe they would go out in front of 75000 fans in Berlin with defeat on their minds?

I don't think so!
