Fosse_KC Posted 12 July 2006 Posted 12 July 2006 Like one or two others, Freddie Mercurys death in 1991 upset me. It wasn't shocking news, but i remember crying before going to school that day. I never got to see Queen live, but have made up for it since with Queen + Paul Rogers. Cozy Powell's death in a car crash a few years ago was a shocker (hero drummer of mine). And who can forget the death of Helen Daniels ... I still cry about that today.
Random Burglar Posted 12 July 2006 Posted 12 July 2006 As many of you know, Feeder are one of my favourite bands. When Jon Lee took his own life i was shocked and wondered why? There were many reasons behind it im sure..but we may never know. Comfort in Sound then came out which were a great bunch of emotionally charged songs to celebrate Jon's life. I was 16 and remember reading it in the paper and i never thought Feeder would be the same again, but they seemed to come back bigger, stronger and better than before, maybe as a tribute to Jon. Mark Richardson has not tried to emulate Jon in any way shape or form but he has done an awesome job and put Feeder back on the map.
Daggers Posted 12 July 2006 Posted 12 July 2006 To be honest, most deaths affect me now, I think its either age, realising that I probably have less years less than I have lived(mid life crisis) and having children. Yea, I think it is sad if someone I like passes - but it doesn't really trouble my day in any great way. I don't know them. I didn't know your Kirsty - loved her gigs, thought her Dad was a star with his reclaiming the countryside protests, and so I thought it sad that her life was cut short by an outboard motor. Celebrities come in two varieties: the decent one's and the massive glut that the world could well do without. If Gordon Ramsey ploughed his car into BBBM's Russel then I'd be the first to organise a street party. The list of those involved in this accident could run to a couple of pages. The only thing that cuts me up nowadays is seeing other parents grieving for their children. Even in films, if the little nipper buys the big one then I'm reaching for a box of man-size faster than Canadian sprint runner on drugs. Or if it is the kid who's been left. Seeing Kirsty MacColls family all upset moved me far more than her death itself. When Pol Pot's death was announced, and that of Slobodan MiloÅ¡ević, Ronald Reagan, Robert Maxwell, Lady Die, and the Queen Mum...I rejoiced. I'm waiting for Thatcher and Pinochet.

I met Jon Lee after a gig at Wolverhampton Civic back in '96 - one of the nicest blokes I had the priviledge to have ever met. We chatted for ages about being drummers in bands, he signed my ticket. I just so happened to have a demo tape of my then band with me - so he asked me to sign it for him. Top bloke, and a great drummer too.

Top bloke, and a great drummer too. My mate, also called Rob, has a signed copy of Polythene i think it is, cant remember. He also said that he loved everybody apart from himself. He did everything for other people. Is a sad moment when you think that somebody with as much talent and love for other people could be driven to suicide.
Jay Posted 13 July 2006 Posted 13 July 2006 Without any shadow of doubt John Peel - The most amazing human being that I ever met - And the one single person who has most influenced my life Hardly a day passes when he doesn't enter my thoughts in some shape or form So much of my music tastes and purchases stemmed from the great man!! It's happy to say the music I heard on the John Peel show changed my life
macbeth Posted 13 July 2006 Posted 13 July 2006 who would have expected tommy cooper to go just like that?
macbeth Posted 13 July 2006 Posted 13 July 2006 I went to richard whiteley's funeral. pneumonia he died of...........at least he went out on a 9 letter word did they play the theme tune as they lowered the count down

Head Honcho Posted 13 July 2006 Posted 13 July 2006 Hit is maybe too strong a word but the death of John Peel, Michael Hutchence and Robert Palmer were the most shocking and unexpected
Bedford Fox Posted 13 July 2006 Posted 13 July 2006 I Would say John Peel! as alot of what influences me as a music lover and a musician (term used losely) was introduced to the mainstream by John Peel!
macbeth Posted 14 July 2006 Posted 14 July 2006 marvin gaye .... the good die young RIP wherever he lays his hat now; harry chapin "all my life's a circle" and "taxi"........two of the best songs ever
Thracian Posted 14 July 2006 Posted 14 July 2006 Prince Rainier. Because of playing at his squash club in Monaco (he was a keen player) and sunbathing on an offshore pontoon just yards from his then-gorgeous daughter Stephanie. It just made it seem closer although he was an old man. Princess Diana because she was so young and the whole thing seemed and still seems so suspicious. Finally George Best. It emphasised how dreadfully some people willingly treat themselves. But how I would have loved to see his like at the recent World Cup. So many of my old favourite footballers are dying now. It certainly makes you value every day.
Nationwider Posted 14 July 2006 Posted 14 July 2006 I respect everyone's feelings - but I'm finding this thread a bit mawkish all the same.

Jon is buried about 1/2 mile from my house and most of my friends were his best friends at school.
