Matt Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 I am currently on AOL and its doing my head in, it has been for weeks, I have phone and gone on technical support a few times, If I phone them up I can't understand the person speaking to me and if I go on technical support there not much help most of the time. Sky have currently started a broadband service which looks very cheap (Not sure on prices of the top of my head but looked at it and thought it was cheap) So who's everyone using? I just looking for a decent but cheap service. I'm currently paying £25 for AOL Broadband and tbh i've not noticed much difference between normal internet and broadband so for £25 and a rubbish service = Rip Off.
Collymore Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 I've used telewest for the last 4 years and have never had to ring for assistance or had any problems. Pay £35 for 10 meg connection but share this with another 3 people. Have AOL at home in leicestershire and it's the worse connection i have ever witnessed. I get cut off every 10 seconds. I'll be moving soon and probably will go on the 4meg contract Telewest is a bit mainstream (which I don't like) but I can't complain about their connection.

I have been on the phone for about an hour trying to sort this problem now (Thats gonna hurt when the phone bill comes) and the bloke on the phone hadn't got a clue what he was on about, so I hung up because I was gonna start shouting at him if he carried on, anyway I come of the phone had a little play around with all the settings and I had eventually installed my drivers than I needed to update my modem, so I tried to sign on, and a message came up saying "Firewall found - Cannot Connect" - Something like that anyway, I didn't want to because I was annoyed anyway but phone AOL up again again the person didn't know what he was on about he said find the Firewall settings on your anti-virus and turn them off so I tried and said there was no option to switch the Firewall off, so he then said something about uninstalling the anti-virus so I did it - because "he knows what he's doing" and as always "I gaurentee this will work" now I have no anti-virus software because I don't have the CD to reinstall So wondering what AOL will say if I phone them up for compensation for 1) Me spending an hour on the phone talking to people who know nothing 2) Someone telling me to uninstall my anti-virus and 3) Inconvienience of not being able to use internet...Will I get compensated? Nahhhhh Oh well looks like a threat of canceling my account - That always (Well most of the time) makes tham say we can give you a free month just for you to try us out, if your not happy then cancel at that time. And if they don't offer me a free month I want to cancel AOL anyway Win - Win situation

In practice, it is unlimited downloads. Tend to ring them when we lose connection, but there is usually no point (nothing you can do about it). Doesn't happen often though.

The area im writting from can only pick up 1.1, yet this computer has talktalk connect upto 8mb. Talktalk is NOT FREE, unless you spend £21 with them... AOL provides a free router now. Norton is but a very average and expensive anti-virus package. They are no better than the many FREE ones you can get. AOL spyware protection is the best ive seen. It has detected stuff ive had on my pc for years, stuff i paid norton to find. 40GB's is rubbish, try UNLIMITED...aol, ntl etc. 15 email addresses at aol...but that aint something to shout about, you can get unlimited email addresses with hotmail and yahoo. How much is this BT package, i pay £15 a month, first month free, 12 month contract, which i then own the router.
