Ultra Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 Aye it was horrendous, but a fair bit of over-reaction in this thread. I mean, it could ALWAYS be worse... The Gazza and Vinnie photo was contrived. If Vinnie tried that today he'd be on a register, and rightly so! But that episode hardly did any harm to the careers of either of them, did it?
oundlefox Posted 24 August 2006 Author Posted 24 August 2006 I'd say the worst one I'd seen before was Leonardo's on that American in the '94 World Cup. The one where Keegan was commentating and he said he couldn't see much wrong with it, even though the guy was eating through a straw for about two months. Thatcher's last night though rocketed to the top of the charts for me. Even more so when you consider he walloped Summerbee a few years ago too, so its not like he hasn't got any history. Good job Match of the Day is on after the 9pm watershed. 18 certificate that job
Jay Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 I think one thing this will bring up is the issue that if you are booked for something then you can't be charged again or receive and additional ban while in terms of this incident it seems pretty obvious that he should be banned for a good few games however on something like this were do you draw the line in terms of what is a bookable offence and what should be taken further? you could end up with a player being banned every game!!
Durnerz Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 I was a big fan of Thatcher when he was at City, sometimes he could go over the top and this situation is an example of that, i'm not going to pick up my pitchfork and flaming torch and head over in the direction of his house though which sounds like what some posters in this thread would do, its a mans game, get over it, you take your knocks etc, the games becoming a softys sport, players like Thatcher are becoming rarer and rarer, some may say good, I personally disagree, people like Cantona,Thatcher etc will provide us with something to chat about in the pub after the game. You lot will be moaning when these kinds of players go or are fined/suspended because they will give you nothing to moan about.

Happens all the time in Rugby Players run halfway across the pitch to elbow someone in the face and send them flying into the advertising boards in Rugby? Dunno what rugby matches you've been watching, that never happened when I played rugby, I'll tell you that for free.
London_Fox Posted 25 August 2006 Posted 25 August 2006 [its a mans game, get over it, you take your knocks etc, the games becoming a softys sport, players like Thatcher are becoming rarer and rarer, some may say good, I personally disagree, people like Cantona,Thatcher etc will provide us with something to chat about in the pub after the game. This must the be the first, I hope last, that Thatcher is mentioned in the same sentence as Cantona for providing entertainment and something to talk about... All this stuff about a 'mans game' is crap when you look at the incident, there is nothing wrong with physical contact and even when challenges are hard challenges but running up to someone and blindsiding them with an elbow to the head is an absolute disgrace. I don't care if he once played for us or if Walshy would have condoned it...its a disgrace and it's a positive thing that football fans (and media) condemn stuff like this when it happens.
davieG Posted 25 August 2006 Posted 25 August 2006 Manchester City have suspended defender Ben Thatcher following his challenge on Pedro Mendes. The City full back has been condemned from all corners of the game following his clash with Mendes, which left the Portsmouth midfielder unconscious. Thatcher was initially booked for the incident, so it was presumed the Football Association would not be able to take action - one reason why City have taken it upon themselves to suspend him, meaning he will miss this weekend's clash with Arsenal. City have stated that Thatcher is suspended from all first-team action until their own internal investigation is completed. The FA, though, have also announced that Thatcher will indeed face a charge of serious foul play. In a statement, The FA revealed they considered the incident serious enough to warrant a separate charge. "The incident is being considered as an exceptional case because The FA contends that the challenge was sufficiently serious that had Thatcher been sent off, an additional sanction would have been merited," said an FA statement. Thatcher has until September 12 to respond to the FA charge.

If the referee and the assistants were watching the game, and had their eyes on the ball, then they would have seen it properly, and he would have gone. Good to hear that Man City suspended him, I personally would have him banned for at least the rest of this season, cos, he says he is sorry, but it isn't the first time he has done something like this.

Every Paper i read this morning condemned his actions, one of them (can't remember which) said he did the same to a Shanghi player on Manchester City's preseason Tour at the begining of this season

Northants Fox Posted 25 August 2006 Posted 25 August 2006 Didn't he also do something like that when he played for Wimbledon?! Yep he flattened Kevin Phillips on that occasion, all the pictures shown in Todays paper show the same intent in his eyes
lcfc_jme Posted 25 August 2006 Posted 25 August 2006 Yep he flattened Kevin Phillips on that occasion, all the pictures shown in Todays paper show the same intent in his eyes So he's done it on 3 seperate occasions?? I bet he has been very apologetic after each one, said sorry and admitted he was way out of order for doing it, promised not to do it again and LIED on 2 occasions. Seriously, should the F.A wait until he leaves somebody with brain damage or paralysed before he recieves a permanent ban??

The pictures of the Mendes incident were blured as Thatcher was in full flight at the time, but from what i could see if his elbow had been 2 to 5 inches higher he could have Killed him.

Well it was bad enough where he did hit him - knocked him out cold and caused him to have a seizure :pinch: Mendes needs to have his whole nervous system examined next week to see if there is any permanent/lasting damage to him... Seriously though, if the F.A isn't the strictest it can be with things like this, it'll only be a matter of time before somebody is left paralysed or brain damaged

And that was a month ago. That must have been a helluva of a tackle to do that. The blokes a nutter.
lcfc_jme Posted 25 August 2006 Posted 25 August 2006 He'll be banned 8 games max on top of his suspension by Man City, and maybe fined a susbstantial amount of his forthcoming wages.. It'll be interesting to see if GMP pursue their investigation any further, and see what they make of it

I forgot the punctured lung Must have broken ribs to punctured a lung surely, i might be wrong but i'm sure thats the only way you can puncture a lung.

That's the common cause for a punctured lung, but probably not the sole cause. To puncture a lung in a tackle is very serious business tho - the impact forces had to br very high indeed.
