Benji Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 News flash - You dont need the brains of a doctor to be a footballer Nor do you need to be that intelligent to know not to move someone in mendes situation. I know the 'typical' footballer is dim, but i would like to think everyone knows that?
Knighton Matt Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 Anyone got a vid of that last night or where can view it - wouldn't mind another look Can't find it but there's some quality moments here one of which features Pedro Mendes.
Head Honcho Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 There is a slight difference between serving a TWELVE-game ban (as Walsh did - still the 2nd longest ever ban in league history), and escaping with a yellow card as Thatcher did. The FA saw fit to hit Walshy with a disrepute charge even AFTER he'd served a three-match suspension. They should do nothing less here, and maybe also give plod footage of the incident. .............but how many of us booed Walshy when he next played at Filbert Street? He was probably applauded ffs and now we have the same people having a pop at Thatcher for his act of violence.

One rule for one and one for another, is the rule applied to football fans in this case!!!
Knighton Matt Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 He's facing FA and police probes! From bbc... The Football Association and Greater Manchester are to launch separate investigations into Ben Thatcher's challenge on Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes. Manchester City defender Thatcher was shown a yellow card after knocking Mendes out with his arm. An FA spokesman said it will investigate whether they can take further action against Thatcher. Greater Manchester Police confirmed it had received complaints which it is "duty bound" to investigate. Mendes needed oxygen at the pitchside and was later taken to hospital after Thatcher's arm propelled the Portuguese midfielder into advertising hoardings. Thatcher could escape punishment as referees are not allowed to retrospectively upgrade yellow cards. An FA spokesman said: "We are looking at whether this may possibly be an exceptional case and what options may exist under our disciplinary regulations." A Fifa spokesman confirmed to BBC sport: "It is one of the fundamental rules of the game that the referee's decision is final. "Therefore, if it is his decision that an offence warrants a yellow card, that cannot be changed later by somebody else." Greater Manchester Police confirmed they had received a number of complaints about the incident and that they would be talking to both clubs, Mendes and Thatcher. A GMP statement added: "From those talks, GMP will decide whether any further action will be taken. "There is no official criminal investigaton but GMP are duty bound to investigate the complaints." Pompey boss Harry Redknapp was incensed by the challenge and urged the FA to take retrospective action against Thatcher. Redknapp said: "The FA have to do something, it is there for all to see. "I do not want to see anyone suspended but how could that possibly not be a red card? "What do you have to do to get a red, kill someone?" Mendes travelled back to Portsmouth after overnight observation and a club statement said: "He will continue to be under medical and neurological supervision during the forthcoming week."
Manwell Pablo Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 They're going to speak to Pedro are they? Bet he remember the incident well!
Head Honcho Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 They're going to speak to Pedro are they? Bet he remember the incident well! You have to laugh though don't ya? We've all seen the incident on TV, yet they want to speak to the only person who probably hasn't watched it and will no doubt think he's still in Portugal
lookwhaticando Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 It all sounds very shocking but I've so far been unable to view the incident. Hopefully they'll replay it tonight on Fox Sports World - especially that he's now being investigated for it. Twat-ish incidents like this should be punished to the fullest extent. A Yellow card won't do - I don't give a f_ck if the ref's decision is 'final' - to classify what sounds like the most horrendous tackle in recent years on the same level as celebrating with the crowd or removing one's shirt in celebration is just complete insanity. Like divers and cheats, dangerous play like this should be dealt with retroactively by the FA.
lcfc_jme Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 He needs banning for it, it was absolutely disgraceful. It'd be more at home in the UFC!! GMP are investigating it as well, should be pressing charges. Apparently he's done it before as well :pinch:

lookwhaticando Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 lookwhaticando for you Holy Sh!t! That's incredible, the speed he was screaming towards Mendes, that elbow would have had a hell of a lot of force behind it. It's no wonder the lad travelled so far! That's disgusting, it really is. The bastard should be banned for at least 10 games, fined by the FA for violent conduct, and fined by his own club too. I hope plod comes up with something they can do him for, too. Disgusting.
City_4_Life Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 lookwhaticando for you No matter how many times you see that it is never going to look any better.
lcfc_jme Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 fuk me. :pinch: Flippin 'eck it looks worse every time you see it :pinch: Especially the shot of Mendes where he's just lying there lifeless and his eyes are glazed over
Head Honcho Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 ...... Yes your quite right. Well done Ben. No one's applauding him! ............but it is a bit rich having Steve Walsh as a city hero on this forum and then complaining about Thatcher doing something that Walshy would have been proud of.
Bloomer Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 He'd already at a go at Kanu and someone else with his elbow. If he did it in the pub he'd be arrested. The guy's a thug and should have the fecking book thrown at him.
Finnegan Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 Aye it was horrendous, but a fair bit of over-reaction in this thread. I mean, it could ALWAYS be worse...
Fez of Mahrez Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 Aye it was horrendous, but a fair bit of over-reaction in this thread. I mean, it could ALWAYS be worse... That picture didn't work here, what was it?
lcfc_jme Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 Aye it was horrendous, but a fair bit of over-reaction in this thread. I mean, it could ALWAYS be worse... Could always be worse you're right.. But say it happened to a City player one Saturday, how would you react then?? Doubt it'd be called an over-reaction then... If he did it in the street or in a pub he would have been arrested and locked up, so what makes it any different because he is a well paid footballer and he did it in his job?? Not good enough, he needs a hefty fine, a ban from the F.A and a proper investigation from GMP.
Manwell Pablo Posted 24 August 2006 Posted 24 August 2006 No one's applauding him! ............but it is a bit rich having Steve Walsh as a city hero on this forum and then complaining about Thatcher doing something that Walshy would have been proud of. Well thats the way you make it sound, Steve Walsh would of been proud of it so we can't critize Thatcher is the way I'm reading it?No we didn't boo Walsh when he came back, I doubt the City fans will boo Thatcher when he comes back. Doesn't mean either sets of fans condone elbows to the head. Thats worse then anything Steve Walsh did any way, he went tanking into mendes like a steam train with one attention, to remove Mendes's head from his shoulders. Walshy didn't even have that much pace for one

Some people need to wind their heads in a bit and remember the way some of our players have acted in the past.

I don't think even Walshy would have been reckless enough to launch an assault like that in the full glare of TV cameras..
