lookwhaticando Posted 2 March 2007 Posted 2 March 2007 Unfortunately it came with the pc, I couldn't wait any longer. In that case... commiserations. Still on the bright side, you'll be all the more experienced for it... having learnt how to handle Vista the hard way, you'll be well placed to answer anyone else's questions about Vista. I can get Windows Vista Business edition for free... but I'm not going to get it just yet. Firstly because it's a new release and I don't trust it as far as I can throw it... and secondly because I just don't fancy backing up all my information - again - formatting and installing a fresh OS. I don't fancy the sound of the upgrade... especially if Vista goes wrong... and I just prefer a clean break anyway, should I decide to change OS. It might mean it takes a little longer to get it set up in my familiar style, but it'll make me feel warmer and fuzzier inside if I start fresh.
davieG Posted 2 March 2007 Posted 2 March 2007 I'm currently finding it impossible to run an external mouse on this laptop, I can't find anywhere the laptop info or in the Vista software for adding a mouse. I've dropped a pm to Deathside but any ideas are welcomed.
lookwhaticando Posted 2 March 2007 Posted 2 March 2007 Is the mouse a USB mouse? Unimportant really as it's been reported that PS/2 mice as well as USB mice are failing to function in Windows Vista. Updated drivers are needed... but unless they've been Vistasized, they're not much use. http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPo...8&SiteID=17
Daggers Posted 2 March 2007 Author Posted 2 March 2007 I've dropped a pm to Deathside but any ideas are welcomed. You won't like my solution dG ~ wipe the drive and install XP. I am loving having all my applications back and running as normal. I may have the odd copy of XP knocking around here somewhere, I'll go hunting if you want?

I'm still running a desk top pc with XP on it, as we need two pc it's the one with the ME Edition that will go as quite a lot of software wont run on that now. Mrs G is currently using the ME for her music and it's bloody noisy, the PC not her music, well that is as well
lookwhaticando Posted 2 March 2007 Posted 2 March 2007 I may have to hang fire then. I suspect so. Sadly. I'm still running a desk top pc with XP on it, as we need two pc it's the one with the ME Edition that will go as quite a lot of software wont run on that now. Mrs G is currently using the ME for her music and it's bloody noisy, the PC not her music, well that is as well Windows ME is the worst version of Windows ever. I thought 98 was poor, but ME took the biscuit. I feel sorry for Mrs G having to use it!
davieG Posted 2 March 2007 Posted 2 March 2007 I suspect so. Sadly. Windows ME is the worst version of Windows ever. I thought 98 was poor, but ME took the biscuit. I feel sorry for Mrs G having to use it! As she has no concept of file management and mainly uses Cool Logic Pro ( a music package) and IE it's not too much of a problem. As mentioned the biggest pain is the noise, she's had to pad it out will pillows and cushions

cisono Posted 2 March 2007 Posted 2 March 2007 I suspect so. Sadly. Windows ME is the worst version of Windows ever. I thought 98 was poor, but ME took the biscuit. I feel sorry for Mrs G having to use it! Windows ME was a rip-off. I would never want it on any of my computers...
lookwhaticando Posted 2 March 2007 Posted 2 March 2007 Windows ME was a rip-off. I would never want it on any of my computers... It was essentially the Windows 98 core with Windows 2000 (a very good OS) style appearance. Unfortunately, fusing the graphics from Win2000 to the core of Win98 made the whole thing very unstable. A friend of mine once managed to crash WinME completely (basically destroyed the OS haha) and he asked me what to do. My advice was to use Win95!
davieG Posted 2 March 2007 Posted 2 March 2007 Windows ME was a rip-off. I would never want it on any of my computers... Yet again like most purchasers it came with the PC, there really was no choice, I guess that's why the guy is so rich.
cisono Posted 3 March 2007 Posted 3 March 2007 Yet again like most purchasers it came with the PC, there really was no choice, I guess that's why the guy is so rich. Indeed. That is why I buy components without an operating system, build it up myself to the spec I have decided and then can put what I want on it
lookwhaticando Posted 3 March 2007 Posted 3 March 2007 Indeed. That is why I buy components without an operating system, build it up myself to the spec I have decided and then can put what I want on it Solaris 10.
cisono Posted 3 March 2007 Posted 3 March 2007 Solaris 10. Hmm well, no, not yet. Although I did have a Solaris server at home here, it was my brother's. Generally linux and more stable versions of Windows (for compatibility)... At times, I wish I had a cool-looking new Mac (especially for graphics work).
Deathside Posted 3 March 2007 Posted 3 March 2007 Is the mouse a USB mouse? Unimportant really as it's been reported that PS/2 mice as well as USB mice are failing to function in Windows Vista. Updated drivers are needed... but unless they've been Vistasized, they're not much use. http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPo...8&SiteID=17 Interesting read - Although I've not encountered any issues with Vista and mice - I note that the majority of the posts on that TechNet thread refer to either PS/2 mice (Not an option for DavieG's notebook) Wireless mice (The whole pairing issue comes into play here) KVM switching (I'll leave that completely alone thank you - Again not relevant for DavieG) In short there should be no issues with a standard USB corded mouse - And a USB wireless should also be no problem once it's paired with it's receiver
cisono Posted 4 March 2007 Posted 4 March 2007 Alternatively... keep your current version of Windows and apply this Vista Pack! (not the same, but it should be much cheaper and impress the neighbours!) Vista Transformation Pack - Freeware Transform your Windows user interface to Vista version. Dr The Singh Posted 5 March 2007 Posted 5 March 2007 Alternatively... keep your current version of Windows and apply this Vista Pack! (not the same, but it should be much cheaper and impress the neighbours!) I've decided to dual boot between the 2, untill Vista sorts itself out!!!
davieG Posted 5 March 2007 Posted 5 March 2007 I now have a working external mouse - cheers Deathside
MC Prussian Posted 30 November 2007 Posted 30 November 2007 I'm getting a new ASUS Desktop PC with Vista on it - I hope that 2Gigs of RAM will sort out any speed issues and that Microsoft has used the past 8 to 9 months working on a more stable version of it... I'm actually getting a bit anxious.
coale39 Posted 30 November 2007 Posted 30 November 2007 1 gb is enough to run vista fine 2gb is more then enough
DB11 Posted 30 November 2007 Posted 30 November 2007 I am getting Vista Home Premium on my laptop for Xmas
Super Arj Posted 30 November 2007 Posted 30 November 2007 dont waste ur time and money - stick with windows xp proffesional , youll find vista complicated at boring to run
coale39 Posted 30 November 2007 Posted 30 November 2007 dont waste ur time and money - stick with windows xp proffesional , youll find vista complicated and boring to run Granted its buggy but complicated? Not IMO
lookwhaticando Posted 1 December 2007 Posted 1 December 2007 Complicated my tits. It's dead easy... my Vista Business is running quite nicely at the minute. It annoys me once in a while with the whole clicking-to-continue stuff (like install a program, change a setting) but such is life. It's neat, it's tidy, I actually use the search feature in the Start menu to find stuff (programs) and it's ace. And I've not come across any serious bugs, as far as I can remember... Vista is an improvement on XP... even in terms of stability, which is impressive to me, considering stable XP was for the most part (and how long they've had to make it so).
