Daggers Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 Is anyone running a beta & do you have any comments about it?
Head Honcho Posted 5 September 2006 Posted 5 September 2006 I may go for Vista premium but not for a while and I certainly won't be paying £200 for the pleasure!
Daggers Posted 20 January 2007 Author Posted 20 January 2007 Spent last night installing it. First, I didn't have the space because of my Linux partition. Then, I forgot to reformat the partition when I wiped it. Eventually I got Vista Business on...but the task bar vanished leaving me some pretty widgets but nothing else I've got the thing working now most of the drivers aren't supported and companies haven't got Vista one's ready. The change in boot/shut down times are noticeably faster (but I now have a pretty empty disk) and it's prettier than standard XP...but I'm at a bit of a loss to understand why anyone would pay for it.

Sounds like the usual windows nightmare.... Windows Vista MAC OSX
Simi Posted 20 January 2007 Posted 20 January 2007 Sounds like there are still some things that need altering then . I tried a demo skin and had the same problem with the taskbar dissapearing Dave.
Rincewind Posted 20 January 2007 Posted 20 January 2007 I thimk when My PC was cleaned up the bloke made it Vista compatable. He said he has seen it (may have it) and said it is great. I don't want the problem I had last time when was being flooded with requests to buy the genuine windows (it is now) from Microsoft if I should decide to upgrade. Vista Preview
JoeyB Posted 21 January 2007 Posted 21 January 2007 I may go for Vista premium but not for a while and I certainly won't be paying £200 for the pleasure! i hopefully will be able to get it for £50 when my uncle next goes to teach microsoft and im not lying either
Daggers Posted 21 January 2007 Author Posted 21 January 2007 Time to go linux-only methinks Nope - I'm starting to bed into it now. Aside from not allowing my (ahem) not entirely legal copy of FM07 to be installed it is working fine with everything else, and I'm liking the little aspects to it such as alt-tabbing through open programs. Linux is nice enough but not if you want games or functionality of certain packages. I'd fancy having a linux/open source network for work in the new build in '08 tho'...but not at home.
stez Posted 21 January 2007 Posted 21 January 2007 my chattering teeth have gone. it's not all bad then

You could do anyway couldn't you? Well you can on the schools computers that run XP

I meant for me. I'd rather go linux only than purchase Vista
Daggers Posted 21 January 2007 Author Posted 21 January 2007 You could do anyway couldn't you? Well you can on the schools computers that run XP Yup - but it looks SOOOOOO much cooler in Vista if you have a game playing at the time in full screen. As I say, there's little touches I keep finding that make me go 'Ooooo'.

As I say, there's little touches I keep finding that make me go 'Ooooo'. So you'll buy Vista for the Ooooo factor? (I imagine this is related to the Vavoom factor? Kind of part of the same family?)
Daggers Posted 22 January 2007 Author Posted 22 January 2007 So you'll buy Vista for the Ooooo factor? (I imagine this is related to the Vavoom factor? Kind of part of the same family?) I'd not buy it - I haven't paid for a single OS...ever. I wouldn't buy one either, but I feel that if new computers are being shipped with Vista in place now then business has no option other than to adopt it. I would like to look at the new office suite ~ but the buggers haven't let me have it for nothing. From the looks, it's an improvement on the current stuff I'm using - and beats the open source stuff hands down.

Dr The Singh Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Oh ok then. The prices seem overinflated anyway. Overpriced, agreed!! But with Microsoft we will all have to comform to there way!!
The People's Hero Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Overpriced, agreed!! But with Microsoft we will all have to comform to there way!! That is the Microsoft way. I wonder when the first MASSIVE security failure/shortcoming with Vista will be discovered and a half arsed patch/update released.
cisono Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 That is the Microsoft way. I wonder when the first MASSIVE security failure/shortcoming with Vista will be discovered and a half arsed patch/update released. Seconded. It is not a question of whether it will happen, but rather WHEN. Strange how this is considered "normal" in the software industry.... If the same mistakes were made in your house alarm system, you'd have good grounds for suing the company... and you'd probably win!
Daggers Posted 22 January 2007 Author Posted 22 January 2007 Strange how this is considered "normal" in the software industry.... ...but no system is 100% and there is no way of anticipating how a piece will interact in all environments. If you striped down a human being to its cellular level and examined it, if you looked at the blu-print for assembling these cells, if you rebuilt a human from the ground up - at no point is there any mention of soul. No hint of the possibilities for the engineered whole to have properties exceeding that of the initial remit. Thus it often is with pieces of software when required to interact within a system. I think people have a right to grumble if no patches were ever produced and everyone was expected to bumble along with gaping holes in their software. It amuses me to listen to the shit that MS come in for...for my money, there's far worse than them operating in the IT industry today. My experience of Novel has left me with a terrible opinion of them.

Daggers Posted 22 January 2007 Author Posted 22 January 2007 Agreed and of course you are right. But why not test the fu cker properly from the start? A combination of logistical possibilities and commercial constraints, I guess. Testing till OK rather than perfect, so it works 80% of the time in 80% of situations - and so that it meets launch dates. I'm on Day 3 and nothing has blown up, no nasty bugs have infected my laptop and no....ARGHHH! OH MY GOD! HOW DID THAT GET I......argh!
