davieG Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 I used to work in, as a mechanical designer and manage a new product development department. It always used to amuse me how, whenever we reviewed progress, which was invariably running late the software designers would castigate the mechanical and electronic designers for any incidents that had led to a delay but were never responsible themsleves for any delays, it was always some mysterious bug that seem to have absolutely nothing to do with the guys designing the software
Dr The Singh Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 A combination of logistical possibilities and commercial constraints, I guess. Testing till OK rather than perfect, so it works 80% of the time in 80% of situations - and so that it meets launch dates. I'm on Day 3 and nothing has blown up, no nasty bugs have infected my laptop and no....ARGHHH! OH MY GOD! HOW DID THAT GET I......argh! I don't mind the updates but updates that **** up the machine is annoying!!
cisono Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 I don't mind the updates but updates that **** up the machine is annoying!! Yeah, I know what you mean. I guess that is why you can now rollback to a previous state. Well, in theory you can, and only sometimes.
Daggers Posted 22 January 2007 Author Posted 22 January 2007 ...it was always some mysterious bug that seem to have absolutely nothing to do with the guys designing the software Perfect, isn't it. I try blaming the kids or the parents ~ doesn't carry the same kudos tho'!
cisono Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Perfect, isn't it. I try blaming the kids or the parents ~ doesn't carry the same kudos tho'! Perfect. Especially when you can do that while earning a (usually) higher salary...
Daggers Posted 22 January 2007 Author Posted 22 January 2007 Perfect. Especially when you can do that while earning a (usually) higher salary... As they are all being out-sourced to India, I can cut them some slack...in fact, it would be nice if we could all be imperfect again - like we were in the '70s. Nowadays everyone is expected to be perfect at all their jobs and being crap isn't tolerated...even though we are all a bit crap. I'm starting a movement - I'm (a bit) crap and I'm proud!

Daggers Posted 23 January 2007 Author Posted 23 January 2007 Today IEx7 and MSN have decided that they don't like Vista and both locked up. I tried to reinstall and was greeted with the message "IEx7 will not work with this operating system" Spot on Microsoft, top marks
fox123 Posted 1 February 2007 Posted 1 February 2007 Does anyone have it yet or tried it? Might see if its available on Bittorrent
Daggers Posted 1 February 2007 Author Posted 1 February 2007 Does anyone have it yet or tried it? Might see if its available on Bittorrent I'm running the Business version on my laptop: It's not effected the speed of processes, the deisgn is appealing, it takes longer to boot up than XP but seems to shut down faster. At the moment IEx7 and MSN do not work - reinstalling them &/or Vista has not solved whatever the conflict is. For a while it kept trying to re-install the wireless network even though it was working. It has a problem with "cracked" software - and will not install them. Everything else seems to work fine. The media centre is more universal now, the treatment of images is an improvement and the ability to change icons is decent. I like the start menu and the widget bar works although I'd like to be able to integrate some Yahoo widgets that I used to use. It's not perfect, but I prefer it to XP on balance and will not be swapping back. Maybe a bigger question is - 'Would I pay around £150 for it?' ... not a hope in hell. If I'd had to pay for it I would have stuck with XP. Get it free or forget it.
Leicfox Posted 1 February 2007 Posted 1 February 2007 stick to XP as a desktop OS unless you like testing new software, most games probably wont even run as there designed for XP and most apps wont even install. Im talking cracked here. I dont pay for nothing.

As I said - they only conflict problems I have are ones with the two Microsoft products.
Monk Posted 1 February 2007 Posted 1 February 2007 I had a play on it in Currys last night - its basically just XP with a fancy windowblinds skin on it. Certainly not worth the price, although I would be satisfied if I had it on a new computer. However, I think my next computer will be a mac, when the new OS comes out later this year.
Daggers Posted 1 February 2007 Author Posted 1 February 2007 However, I think my next computer will be a mac, when the new OS comes out later this year. I'm reckoning the same...but don't tell Babylon ~ he'll be insufferably smug.

Thanks for that, think I will stick with XP Pro for now, untill microsoft bring out a new service pack for vista, which i am pretty confident they will!

Daggers Posted 1 February 2007 Author Posted 1 February 2007 Are your apps cracked or legit. Macromedia 2004 suite and my entire Adobe suite are...*ahem*...on approval Everything else is freeware, shareware or original.
Deathside Posted 1 February 2007 Posted 1 February 2007 But why not test the fu cker properly from the start? I've been beta testing it for over a year - TBH I'm glad that's all over MS have been a lot more demanding in the beta - pushing you for bug reports etc Personally I don't think it's any great revolution - It's prime feature is eye candy - (If you have Aero enabled try Windows Tab instead of Alt Tab) It's other notable feature is the search function EG: Hit Start (I know it's not called the Start button anymore) then type device manager and hit enter - Dev Man opens Right now I'm quality testing Vista machines - but that's enough geekness from me for 1 day

lookwhaticando Posted 1 February 2007 Posted 1 February 2007 Eye candy is something MS has been lagging behind for... hmmm about 30 years. So it's good to see them make the effort this time around.
fox123 Posted 1 February 2007 Posted 1 February 2007 Service pack 3 for XP is being worked on Im quite suprised at this actually, I would have thought the Service pack 2 is stable enough?
