NEW PLAYER SIGNED

Is anyone else concerned that Kelly doesn't seem to know where to look when it comes to signings. We were supposed to be on the lookout for a striker, we've obviously failed and ended up bringing in a player who was here last season, who isn't a striker and was pretty average overall, perhaps just about equal to Porter when it comes to an attacking threat. He's not even got the right side of midfield that needs strengthening. Both sides are indeed horrible but we have the option of a League 2 winger and a central midfielder who quite frankly doesn't look anything like a footballer to me anymore for selection at right wing.

This signing doesn't mean the end of Tiatto, he will start on Tuesday, mark my words. Welsh will be a sub and Porter will most likely be left out the 16. Unless either of them are much use on the right, still it's not their natural position. Gradel.

I agree.

But hasn't Kelly said he's still trying to sign a striker?

kelly said before soton game he was trying to make TWO loan signings welshj being 1 plus a striker, he is obviously still working on the striker side of things

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. I like being right. Especially about the tackling/heading. And I'm not surprised he's out of his depth. He is only good for beating people going forward. His crossing's bad, finishing bad, passing mediocre, but pace and skill are his assets. He won't get much better than he is now"

Message relayed from my Cobblers supporting mate about Josh Low after reading some of the ratings he received on here for Saturday.

........but the o/s are trying to sell him to the fans as a "forward"

With two goals in 30 odd games I beg to differ!

Elvis strike rate!

As good as Fryatt's and O'Grady's this year but overall, none of them have a strike rate like Dodds over the last 12 months or indeed this season match for match!. Just being mischievous with that last bit.

This is a very smart move. It shows that RK is on the ball with what needs to be done to strengthen the side's weaknesses. Since he has played for us before he should just fall right into place. Like bric-a-brac ;)

I wonder whether this will be followed by loaning Maybury to Sunderland?

The reason Welsh's deal took longer than expected (it was due to be completed on Friday), was that discussions about Maybury going in the other direction, were still going on. I've heard from a journo mate, that the "Maybury deal is 'on hold' (again !) - it might be resurrected before the weekend" - Sunderland apparently only want him for a month, Kelly is (currently) holding out for a deal for them to keep him until January - with a view to a permanent (money - hoorah !) deal when the 'window' opens.

Gutted tbh. I thought he was a waste of time when he was here before, maybe he's improved but lets face it he can't get into the Sunderland team. I like the look of Porter, and I know Welsh can play right wing, but all i can see is Porter being pushed out he picture. Kelly keeps going on about not wanting to make the young players play too much, well there not playing enough, plus with Tiatto where is the need for another winger?

This is, and always be a fu cking stupid argument. Theiry Henry couldn't get in the Juventus team, Kanu couldn't get in WBA team, Stan Collymore couldn't get in the Villa team, There was a time when Ronny stuggled at PSG. Stuart Elliott can't get in Hulls team now and IMO he's a damn good player and he's scoring record for them shows it.

Just because that Irish basket case can't see that a certain player has got talent doesn't mean they don't posses it.

Please note the use of "A certain player" instead of "Andy Welsh"

:yesyes: Excellent point.

To be honest, I'm quite excited about this signing. No particular reason.

Definitely agree. He hasn't brought in the best of players so far...

Let's see who this possible new strike he brings in is. I hope it's Leon Knight. I quite like him as a player

As for Welsh coming in, we have the Palace game coming up soon. Remember what happened last year? Welshy scored and we won 2-0! :P

Well you were right about the Welsh signing. It only makes sense that Maybury is now offloaded, but Ultra pointed out something I hadn't thought of - we already have a relatively low squad, and if defenders get seriously injured where does that leave us?

I know it's not a priority since we have a pretty decent defense line, but we need to beef up our numbers a bit back there. Maybury hasn't been great for us and he'll no doubt do better elsewhere - so who else could fall into that category? Maybe some more League One singings?

No more defenders!

We've plenty of them - the only time we'll struggle is if we lose 3 or 4 in one go. That'd be very tragic and quite unlikely. Our defenders are quite flexible too. Stearman, Nissa, Maybury can play in a couple of positions each.

We could do with a proper, natural left-back - but ideally any new left back should replace a current defender - Maybury being the likely exitee, as his position (RB) is well covered by Kenton & Stearman.

The other alternative is to wait for Nissa to head back to the Premiership, replace him with a true left back and rely on Tiatto/Maybury as LB cover.

But neither of them have been playing in the youth team last year. If they ahd they'd probably have scored as many as Dodds, well Fryatt would have. He set all sorts of records in the academy at Walsall. Thrac, you do need to realise that youth level and reserve level are completely different to first team level in the championship. That's not to say that Dodds record should be made a mockery of because he can only score in the level of matches he is playing in and who knows what he'd be like in our first team, but you must bare in mind the different levels of football sir.

I well take your point.

But it still seems extraordinary to me that we train up a local lad for donkey's years. He's scores endless goals. And then we starve him at footbal just as he's playing his best football and at his highest level at the same time as we're searching for anyone who can put the ball in the net.

Now he's had to go on loan just to get fit again and every chance we've had to use him in matches (Macclesfield/Hereford) or off the bench has been wasted.

Individuals have blown hot and cold but I've not noticed any of our young players looking out of their depth on moving into the Championship.

In fact nothing I've seen this year so far suggets the Championship is a particularly good standard at all.

Logan, Stearman, Porter, Wesolowski, O'Grady have done just as well as many and better than some I could and have named.

However I do think the performance of some young players has suffered sometimes because they are too often surrounded by older plays who just don't pass and support well enough and the quicker that changes the better in my view.

Dodds is not just a striker. He can pass and move with the best we've got.

This is another one of your failings. The Championship might not be particularly pleasing on the eye, but that is because it's a professional football league with 24 teams who play extremely well without the ball compared to most youth/reserve sides. Before you point out how fantastic Porters passing has been in the first team, it hasn't been anything special you've just got your Porter specs on. Passing and moving is easier said than done in this division, the space allowed to players at youth level is ridiculous, I've seen it.

On the Dodds subject, he's gone on loan for the same reasons Sheehan has, and if powers a 25 year belter in every week a few people might sit up and take note, he might get a more attractive loan deal or maybe find himself in out sixteen. He has 4 or 5 players in front of him 2 of which are worshipped by the management and the supporters.

Do you REALLY think any Premiership side would be desperate enough to sign him?:unsure::unsure:

To be fair if he was going on a free and I was manager of a newly promoted club I would think about signing him. He's not a bad Premiership CB he's shown that with Blackburn, he would as a squad player. People forget we play him out of position every single game. He's no more of a left back than Kisnorbo.

That may be true but currently we have a midfield who's philosophy seem to be 'pass and have a bit of a strole' or 'pass and wave your arms about pointing at other players'.

The lack of goals this season and the inability to break down defences are a direct result of this.

a) Porter's passing has generally been excellent in the first team...in all parts of the field.

b) If Dodds isn't wanted let him go. Someone else can benefit if we can't give him a chance or even a sensibly supporting game.

c) I've not seen any Championship side play well this season. With or without the ball.

Well you can't of gone to the Burnley game then because that was the perfect away performance.

EDIT: For the second season in a row.
