Anish Posted 18 December 2006 Posted 18 December 2006 I was in New York just 2 weeks ago on the final leg of my RTW trip. It'll be bloody busy, I'll warn you now! The streets will be packed full of tourists, trust me. As for shopping, I'd recommend Woodbury Common - it's about 50 miles outside NY but it's got loads and loads of factory outlets, and the prices really are cheap. You'll have to take a Gray Line coach to get there - it costs $38 per person, but it's well worth it. Another tip:Search for 'Woodbury Common' on google, and register on their site - then you can get online discount vouchers, which you print out and take along with you. My brother did it so I don't know the exact website, but again it'll come in good use for shopping.

Manwell Pablo Posted 18 December 2006 Posted 18 December 2006 I'm going with school, Geography field trip so I don't think I'll have time to check out any bars Funny you should say that, I went there on a 6th form Business field trip. I had plenty of time for bars. Amazingly so did the teachers. Not one once of work done all week! We were going to go to the Barcelona stock exchange but we couldn't find it And they say standerds are splipping in state schools.

Had our work's christmas do in Barcelona this year, the Baja Beach Club was top banana. Mrs Hullfox had to keep putting my tongue back in my mouth (I think you'll get my drift Singhmeister!) Barcelona almost deserves it's own thread.

ANy tips on where to eat, drink, and ofcourse Mrs Singh likes her shoppping, your posts will be much appreciated!! I am driving to Boston on Thursday and will be doing my very best to get around the place as I travel North. It's a zoo at the best of times and over Xmas and New Year will be crazy. It'll probably be cold and extremely crowded. Tips....... Nightime boundaries if you are walking; North-South, 42nd and 59th Streets; East-West 5th and 8th, anywhere else take a cab. 5th Avenue is the place for shopping but expensive. There are some great small deli's for breakfast and lunch and they are everywhere. There are some fabulous retaurants, your concierge will be your best guide. It's unlikely that you'll get into a Broadway show since the good ones will have been booked for months but there are some great jazz clubs like Birdland and Blue Note. I also enjoy the architecture of the Plaza Hotel and having a Martini there. The Oak Room is a famous restaurant but its $$$$. For sighteeing use Grayline Tours or similar, they are the fastest way of seeing just about everything. Doing it by foot and taxi is time consuming and expensive. If you need anything else PM me. I'll wave on the way home as I head South on the New Jersey Turnpike. Have a great time!

I'm looking forward to it, except new years eve, everything around time square is ticket only, do you know anywhere around time square that's not charging $200???? Are you from Vancouver VaFox, cus my brothers spending new years there???

Guest Posted 18 December 2006 Posted 18 December 2006 I love NY, I think we'll be going back in the summer. I thought the pub culture was better in Boston than in NY, but you can find some great little places off the beaten track. You can't go to NY and not have a sandwich at Carnegies Deli. I went in 2000, and I still can't stomach the thought of pastrami, the portions were so huge!! Even Carl couldn't eat half of his sandwich, and that's saying something!!
Finnegan Posted 18 December 2006 Posted 18 December 2006 I can help with your New York accent. Had some first hand schooling from a couple of NY students last year. Otherwise, I'm up short.

Are you from Vancouver VaFox, cus my brothers spending new years there??? No I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia in the US about 400 miles south of NY City. Va is the postal abbreviation for Virginia. I have never been to New York over New Years and don't live close enough to make any suggestions about how to see the ball drop inexpensively. As I said have a great time and stay safe. One other thing that I meant to mention is that New Yorkers have the reputation of being rude, don't be offended by their manner, they're like it with everyone.
lookwhaticando Posted 18 December 2006 Posted 18 December 2006 Fifth Avenue is definitely the place to shop - as VaFox has stated prior, but that is if you've the wallet to do it with. Finding a place to eat should be easy - particularly around Times Square and surrounding area. There's plenty of different establishments, but you must try a proper New York deli while you're there. Finally, New York is a busy place even in 'the dead of night' - I can imagine it'll be infinitely busier during the Christmas period. Part of the reason will be all the knobs coming down from the hills to buy expensive gear from nice shops. Hope Know you'll have a great time there.

I was appalled and disgusted with the rude manner of most people - ticket staff, shop assistants, even hostel workers at the hostel I was staying in. A little courtesy wouldn't go amiss, although I don't think 'pleasant' or 'polite' is in the New York vocabulory.

I went in early 2002 and it wasn't as bad as people made out - for obvious reasons they had softened up a bit - but it still wasn't the warm fuzzy feeling you'd expect/hope for of such a huge city, tourism-wise.
