BartonFox Posted 23 January 2007 Posted 23 January 2007  People wonder why England never win owt? Joey Barton, what has he ever done at Man City to be talked alongside the slightly above average Lampard and Gerrard, neither of whom can touch the now retired Paul Scholes?

Joey Barton, what has he ever done at Man City to be talked alongside the slightly above average Lampard and Gerrard, neither of whom can touch the now retired Paul Scholes? Spot on. Although I'd rate Gerrard above slightly above average. He's a good player and worth his spot. Scholesy is missed big time though...
Manwell Pablo Posted 23 January 2007 Posted 23 January 2007 Spot on. Although I'd rate Gerrard above slightly above average. He's a good player and worth his spot. Scholesy is missed big time though... Indeed whoever said Lampard retired Paul Scholes is talking tripe, I know for a fact McLaren would take Paul Scholes back and play him tomorrow if Scholes changed his mind.

Agree about Gerrard being slightly better but he isn't all that the media, Scousers and hooray-Henry football watchers would have you believe. I would go as far to say that Owen Hargreaves is better than Gerrard in an England shirt, never have either Fat Frank or Snide Stevie put in a shift for their country like Mountie Owen did against Portugal.
BartonFox Posted 23 January 2007 Posted 23 January 2007 Scholesy is missed big time though... Quite possibley the best English player ever.
Ric Flair Posted 23 January 2007 Posted 23 January 2007 Quite possibley the best English player ever. Just a shame that once Keegan took over, Scholes became a shadow of his former self and didn't really re-discover his high level of performances when Erikkson took over either. Infact he was pretty dire for his standards from about 2000-2004. His hat-trick against Poland in Keegan's first competitive match was simply sublime though. The only other individual performance in an England shirt that can compete with that is probably Beckham against Greece when he managed to run about 2 miles more in 90 minutes on the pitch than any other player!.

Was that the match when he scored the free-kick to put is into the World Cup? Or was it Euro?

Joey Barton, what has he ever done at Man City to be talked alongside the slightly above average Lampard and Gerrard, neither of whom can touch the now retired Paul Scholes? Good call. Unfortunately for me Scholes ruined it when he spent the 2002 World Cup falling over in the penalty area looking for a foul. I remember one classic when he threw himself to the floor but waited until the ref was watching but in the meantime the defender had moved and was nowhere near him by then. If Barton is the future of England's midfield then it will be along time before we win any silverware.

It was Scholes that took England to Euro 2000 with his 2 goals at Hampden, if he wasn't there then England would have been out on their arse. Scotland more than matched England everywhere else over the 2 legs, but we didn't have a Scholes. Even the Tartan Army have the utmost respect for Scholes, quality player.

I remember it well, England were a shambles other than Scholes. Not to take anything away from Scotland as you were in our faces for the entirerity of both matches and Keegan hadn't prepared us for it. I would like to retract my statement about Scholes being disappointing from 2000-2004, it was more like 2002-2004, under Eriksson.
Ric Flair Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 Was that the match when he scored the free-kick to put is into the World Cup? Or was it Euro? Yeah the match he scored the free-kick. I'd be very surprised if Beckham wasn't immediately hauled in for a drugs test after that game. Most people thought he must have been on something to sustain that level of performance for 96 minutes.
breadandcheese Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 The one problem with Scholes is his ability to play in the heat. Without doubt, he is one of the most talented players we have produced and is rightly hailed as a true professional, shunning the limelight and just getting on with it. However, whenever we have played in the heat, he has wilted. I don't know if it's related to his asthma, but he just doesn't seem to reproduce his form at the Summer tournaments when he is playing in 28 degrees plus. All his best games, (Poland, Scotland) have all been during the winter months.
Geo V Posted 24 January 2007 Posted 24 January 2007 I sometimes think that the players we have are good enough, its just they are all fooked come the World Cup. I cant think of any other country that has there elite clubs playing so many games. League Cup, FA Cup, European Football and the League and this bit is the killer for me, WITH NO BREAK!! Owen Hargreaves was quoted as saying that he felt great at the World Cup and that was due to the Germans winter break. He arguably was our best player. Germany looked lively as a nation and I thought they would win it I know Italy won it but one thing to take into consideration is the speed that our football is played at compared to theres. Ours is energy sapping football and I cant see England winning a sausage unless they are hosts or unless something gives in the amount of games our players play.

I think that's an excuse though and this nation loves excuses. A break 6 months before a tournament isn't surely going to be the difference between doing well at a tournament and doing bad is it?
