Daggers Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Frank Lampard has hit back at Joey Barton's criticisms of the Chelsea midfielder's England performances.Manchester City midfielder Barton was scathing about Lampard's World Cup and claimed he should replace Lampard in England's midfield. Lampard told the Times: "There are a lot of players fighting for a place but they don't come out and say something. "They get their heads down and keep fighting. That's what Owen Hargreaves did when he could have said things." Barton, who has been tipped to figure in England's squad next month, was critical of England players like Lampard who brought out autobiographies in the wake of England's poor showing in Germany. The outspoken City midfielder also said Lampard and Steven Gerrard could not play together in the same midfield, and claimed they needed a ball each to succeed. Lampard said: "I don't think Joey should talk about me and Steve Gerrard, that probably says enough. "Joey mentioned that he was running at six in the morning in Dubai on holiday and then he wondered if me and Stevie G were doing the same. "When I read that, I thought: 'I was doing that when I was 11. That's the difference. "I've been training my socks off and I think Stevie G has as well. That's what you do. "Maybe Joey Barton has found that but I've been doing that for a long time. "As a professional - and I know I'm talking about another player now - you shouldn't talk about other players too much." I wonder at the mindset of a tosser who refuses to accept that he was shit last summer - but I get really tiked off with the attitude that he is above question and that no professional should ever speak out about another. I hope Barton cracks the squad - a pugnacious, prove-yourself attitude could start to make watching England just that bit slightly more interesting.

Geo V Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 I think that too many footballers today lack personality or the balls to say whats on there mind. I saw Barton on Soccer AM the other day and he looks an honest lad. I personally dont think he is as talented as he thinks he is but there is nothing wrong with him actually saying what most people have been thinking in recent times, that Lampard and Gerrard in central midfield together isnt working.
Milky Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 lampard is a complete arse, he never grabs a big game by the scruff of the neck. coward.
JoeyB Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 lampard is a complete arse, he never grabs a big game by the scruff of the neck. coward. unlike gerrard who is the best cm in the prem by far gerrard would make it at chelsea and improve them by miles unlike lampard who would be an average player at liverpool
Tommeh Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Barton is just saying what everyone else thinks but because he is a fellow professional, Lampard seems to think he's doing something wrong Barton was great on soccer AM on saturday, his road to wembley goal was a beaut! Hope he gets in the England squad, will be interesting to see how he and Lampard get on after these comments.
MC Prussian Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Lampard's been awful in the past weeks. He and the entire team are nothing without Terry. So much for being a team player... Arrogant bastard, can't even be happy with his current contract and admit that he's been lacking initiative recently. I wouldn't mind Barton in the England squad. The only issue that I can detect is his tendency towards the colour red...
lcfc_jme Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 I wouldn't mind seeing Barton in the England squad - it'd be interesting now to see whether he could do the business at international level following his recent comments. Lampard is shockingly bad for England. And has been in recent weeks for Chelsea as well. I wouldn't mind seeing him dropped from the England squad, or at least demoted to the bench. Barton is right in most of what he said about Lampard imo. He just cannot play in the same midfield as Steven Gerrard. It's obvious. People talk about Gerrard being Liverpool? Terry is Chelsea imo. Lampard isn't as effective for them these days as he was last term.
Flynny Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Lampard had 4 bad games for England at the world cup but before that was a revelation. No-one remember him forcing Scholes, a fooking good player, out of the team and into retirement? Personally if I had to pick a Midfield for England for tomorrow I'd have Gerrard on the right, Hargreaves in DM, Lampard in AM, and Aaron Lennon starting on the left. He just brings an extra dimension to the England attack whilst doing his actual midfield job pretty damned well anyway.

I think that Lampard and Gerrard just do not work in the same team. If Barton was to come into the England squad I wouldn't complain. He is hungry more so than Lampard in my opinon. I would like to see... Lennon .......... Gerrard .......... Barton .......... Cole All of that midfeild has goals in it and although Cole is not left footed I have never been convinced with Downing on the left for England.

Cole's injured and will still be at the next international. A flat 4 in midfield doesn't work for England at international level. So no. And Barton is a hard worker but he has no class. Hargreaves is immensely better than him. Gerrard is a better all around midfield player than Lampard, but Lamps and Hargreaves offers more diversity. Lampard is a better attacker, he gets into striker's positions as well as getting long shots. Just because he tends to score more crucial tap-ins than rifling in 25 yard volleys doesn't make him worse. For a diverse midfield that has each player in a role where they know what they doing, Gerrard needs to be dropped or shunted out onto the right. He's never looked brilliant internationally anyhow.
lcfc_jme Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Hargreaves would evidently be a better option than Barton because Hargreaves has impressed greatly when he has been given the chance. He's just recovering from a broken leg though so I'd see no harm in giving Barton a go. Personally, I feel Lampard needs dropping from the squad to eradicate his complacency. He needs a good kick up the arse because his performance levels are decreasing. He's one of Jose's untouchables, and I think that's possibly getting to his head a little bit. Go SWP right-wing, Barton + Gerrard in the middle and Lennon on the left for the next game (SWP + Lennon can alternate). When Cole is fit enough to play he should replace SWP.

I think that you can fiddle with the formation to a certain extent until it becomes stupid. But we are still at the qualifying stage at the moment. When it gets to the next Euro Championships then maybe your right Hargreaves shoud play. I think if Gerrard is to be dropped out of the centre of midfield he shoudln't be put to the right as it proved at Liverpool he can't to his best job there. Lennon is a better attacking outlet for us if McLaren wants to carry on playing Crouch.

And I'm not "fiddling with the formation", either. We played a 4-4-2 diamond for much of the World Cup. I know that probably shouldn't inspire us with confidence in its effectiveness, but oh well.

potter3 Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 I know it isn't very popular since the Croatia debacle, but I beleive a 3-5-2 would be best. Lampard - Hargreaves - Gerrard as the central three. Or perhaps the same three in a 4-3-3? Just a suggestion. Having Hargreaves there, especially in a 3-5-2 with wing-backs gives Gerrard and Lampard the license to go forward. Hargreaves isn't so bad drving forwards either when he needs to.
lookwhaticando Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 --------------------Foster Richards---Ferdinand--Carragher--Bridge ----------Nolan----------- Carrick ------------------Gerrard ---Rooney---- Johnson---- Davies -------------------------------------------------- Discuss. Carrick in for Hargreaves (until fit), Lampard dropped completely. Carragher/Terry to swap when Terry fit.
Sparky Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 robinson richards terry ferdinand bridge gerrard lampard hargreaves j cole/ lennon rooney johnson barton would be close owen would return for johnson when fit ashton could be close when fit
RowlattsFox Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 robinson richards terry ferdinand cole lennon gerrard hargreaves cole rooney defoe king instead of terry until hes fit, carrick instead of hargreaves. iv been impressed with huddlestone i dont think it will be long till hes in the senior squad. i'd like to see rooney n ashton upfront to see what thats like.
Manwell Pablo Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Micah Richards? Have none of you seen Garry Nevile play for Man u this season.
Milky Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Micah Richards? Have none of you seen Garry Nevile play for Man u this season. i agree, he's still the best right back we have.
lookwhaticando Posted 22 January 2007 Posted 22 January 2007 Micah Richards? Have none of you seen Garry Nevile play for Man u this season. He's had a couple of injuries this season, though, hasn't he? If that's not the case, get him in. I remember him playing a few weeks or so ago - had something like 3 or 4 shots on goal, he hit the post a couple of times. Quite impressive for a RB. Agree he has done well from what I've seen... but is he always fit? Least ways, it's academic - RB isn't the problem with the England side!
Geo V Posted 23 January 2007 Posted 23 January 2007 I dont know why we are so loyal to certain players in our sports. We do the same in cricket as we do in football. There is nothing wrong with changing the side around to find the magic forumla and that doesnt mean it has got to be the BEST players who play. If I was the England manager I`d go for this lot... SCOTT CARSON (Robinson over-rated, no co-incidence Wenger didnt buy him when available for £5m from Leeds) MICAH RICHARDS (Gary Neville makes too many mistakes at the top level, Micah gives us options going forward) RIO FERDINAND (A good defender who needs to bring the ball out of defence more often) LEDLEY KING (whenever he plays looks to up his game whilst John Terry has been done quite often at that levl as his lac of real face is found out. I still think Terry is quality but King ups his game) ASHLEY COLE (Having an awful season and hasnt impressed in recent games but he has no competition) AARON LENNON (Different class who is now adding to his game by scoring the odd goal and running inside) STEVIE GERRARD (The best midfielder by far and carries Liverpool by himself) OWEN HARGREAVES (Wins the ball but can carry it too. Great dribbler and crosser but needs more goals) JOE COLE - (Has made left mid his own and was our bets player in WC) WAYNE ROONEY (World Class but needs to play upfield more. I`d tell him not to waste so much energy running back and stopping crosses coming in around his own peno box) JERMAINE DEFOE (For years we have had problems in defence and midfield and had great strikers from Ian Wright to Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand to Teddy Sherringham. Now, we have just a few options and he is the best out of an ordinary bunch) For once, I`d just want our footballers to be given the freedom to go out and express themselves and just GO FOR IT. Instead, we get this pissing about and nervousness in our teanm sports and its even evident in Cricket and Rugby these days. Play like theres nothing to lose and kick arse!!
