Crystal Palace 2 - 0 Leicester City

Recommended Posts

Oh, and looking back on it now, it's not just Kelly who got it wrong yesterday. Henderson didn't have a very secure game and was very much at fault for their first goal. Stears still doesn't look comfortable, Horsfield was largely ineffective, Hume wasn't actually too great, Jarrett was a waste of time and I refuse to even attempt a comment on Johnson or Hughes.

Taylor tames feeble Foxes

CARL FLETCHER’S fortuitous opener and Ben Watson’s late penalty mean that Crystal Palace wake up this morning 10 points adrift off the playoff positions, a gap that means these teams will almost certainly meet again at this level next season.

In truth, Palace were worthy winners, but such was the wretchedness of Leicester City that they cannot have secured an easier three points all season. Indeed, City seemed under the impression their own disappointing season is already over, a point not lost on the 1,378 travelling supporters, who jeered off their lacklustre team after 90 wasted minutes.

If mid-table Championship mediocrity ill-behoves both these Premiership aspirants, Leicester at least have the excuse of Milan Mandaric’s takeover. Palace, however, have been consistent only in their inconsistency. The first half explained exactly why both teams are where they are.

Despite Leicester’s fans still baying for Palace manager Peter Taylor’s blood six years after he left City’s employ, there was an end-of-season feel to the afternoon that even Dougie Freedman’s relentlessness and Watson’s assumption of midfield hegemony could not wholly obscure.

After 15 minutes there appeared to be little danger when Palace’s Tom Soares gambolled down the right. Carl Fletcher met his cross with a low, powderpuff poke at goal, only to watch with a sense of wonder as City’s hapless Australian goal-keeper Paul Henderson got both hands to the ball, but still allowed it to trickle into the corner of the net.

The arrears hardly inspired City. Instead, Palace assumed breezy control. Chances fell to Clinton Morrison and Freedman, but half-time came and went without a further test of Henderson’s jitters.

Palace continued to look sharper after the break and four minutes after the restart Soares and James Scowcroft combined down Palace’s right, only for Morrison to miskick in front of goal. If Leicester lacked zeal, Palace had a certain panache, particularly when Soares took the opportunity to run at Nils-Eric Johansson, and twice Morrison had fair shouts for a penalty rejected.

The introduction of Totten-ham loanee Mark Yeates finally galvanised City. Soon there were chances for fellow substitute Elvis Hammond and Levi Porter and Gabor Kiraly was finally called on in the 87th minute when he was sufficiently alert to paw aside Jason Jarrett’s drive.

Soon afterwards, however, Palace iced their cake. Soares crossed deep, only for Patrick Kisnorbo to handle needlessly. Watson lashed home the penalty and Palace had the faintest glimmer of hope for ascension in May.

An unbiased viewpoint though...the full article makes for an interesting slagging - I popped it into the match thread

You're right that does make for interesting reading, and it is not far wrong. It just goes to show, without using merited expletives, how pitifully bad we were yesterday. I think even an end of season performance would be better than that. Inexcusably dreadful to be fair. And when he talks about their first goal - the use of the phrase "powderpuff poke" to describe the shot is a fair summary. My 12 year old brother could well have saved that effort. Miserable attempt from Henderson in all honesty. Who's the bloke that wrote it?

I've said it after most away games I've been to this season but that's it for me away from home 'til August. 12 away games, 1 win this season. Games I've missed include Leeds, Hereford, Hull and Burnley. Is it just co-incidence or am I an unlucky mascot?

Don't want to go into detail about the match becuase I'll probably just repeat everything people have already said. Game summed up by Johansson's throw-in which was taken quickly to absolutely no-one and rolled out for a Crystal Palace goal kick. Yes, these are professional footballers. Oh and if I see another corner taker who hits the first man I'll go on the pitch and ram the corner flag up the offenders backside because that is shocking at any level. If you can't take corners let someone else do it who can.

Sorry, but to anyone claiming the above reporter is some oracle of unbias genius: What a load of toss. Now don't get me wrong, we were abysmal. Really, really bad.

But the only thing that separated us from them was a very fortunate penalty and a flimsy shot that wormed its way in thanks to a the one thing they had and we didnt: a bit of luck. Anyone under the belief that Palace were "better" than us, or anyone, on the day needs to be examined. They were about as embarrassingly, boringly uninspired as we were. A shit game.

That's one thing that pisses me off more than most, WHY oh WHY can't professional footballers take proper corners?!?! We havn't had a decent corner taker for years! It's a dead ball situation with no pressure on the player - just put the bloody ball into the box! I can accept the odd few going wayward or not clearing the 1st man BUT it just seems all to frequent!!

FAO those people moaning about our lack of ability from dead ball situations in recent times: I hear that a certain Alan Sheehan is a dead-ball specialist.

Palace were better than us - they won the game 2-0. We didn't deserve anything, and didn't earn anything. We had about 4 shots all game - 2 from distance and an Elvis Hammond header from 5 yards which went over the bar (from a goal-bound header if I might add). Palace didn't need to play inspiring football at any stage during the game, we allowed them to come forward with the ball, we didn't close them down enough and were absolutely, positively disgraceful when we had possession. There's only so long you can play shite and come away with points or sneak wins. Our luck deserted us on Saturday. I hope it's not a sign of things to come.

Even counting Gdjonnson, Sheehan has taken the best free kicks I've seen at Leicester these last two season - but mostly at the beginning of last season in the Reserves, two crackers in one match being particularly memorable - one that scored and the other that smashed against the bar.

He is also a decent crosser of the ball and is one of the few players at Leicester who can weight a long pass accurately. Not always, but sometimes.

Taylor TAMING the feeble foxes? Palace well worthy winners? Palace notably sharper after half time? There's no such thing as an unbias report, Dave. Everyone has their prejudices and sides however slight. Don't get me wrong, we were abysmal and I've admitted that, I'm just saying Palace were equally woeful and more on the end of what could and should really be considered luck than superiority.

There's a reason why Sheehan doesn't get in the side and I think it is a fitness problem. When I last saw him play in the behind closed doors friendly against Northampton Levi Porter was watching and said something along the lines of "he could do with a month of complete rest- no training or matches" about Sheehan when speaking to Gerry Taggart. If team-mates are concerned that he isn't fit enough then it is understandable that the management team don't select him. I'm not debating his ability from free kicks and other set pieces but if he hasn't got the legs to get around the pitch then he's not of much use at present. A fit Alan Sheehan would add something to our first team.

I remember you mentioning that and have said it depends if he's fit for that reason. He had groin trouble last season which kept him out for a while and is the sort of injury that can recur. There may be other niggles.

That may be the explanation for his constant non-appearance, although he played regularly enough at Mansfield, and, if he needs rest it begs the question why we've not acquired another attacking left back.

There are high hopes for Mattock but he's only 16 and has a way to go yet before he's the finished article so it seems obvious the position needs strengthening.
