It is still mathematically possible that Leicester could still suffer relegation from the Championship this season.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/e...tor/default.stm

We have eight games and my prediction is as follows:

Stoke: Lose

Derby: Lose

Plymouth: Draw at best

Norwich: Lose

Birmingham: Lose

Preston: Lose

Barnsley: Draw at best

Wolves: Lose

We are in this position because our current squad is not good enough. Over a season, you the table will generally reflect the quality of the team.

Rab Douglas:

Leicester career finished when Craig Levein left the club. He will surely depart the club in the summer. He is not the world’s worst goalkeeper just no better than the ones we already have and his frequent decisions to come charging out and clatter the opposing player when faced with a one on one haven’t helped him.

Alan Maybury:

In my opinion, he is still the best right back we have at the club and is more than capable at this level of football. When Rob Kelly took over as manager as the club he said no more square pegs in round holes (or something like that) but has played Maybury out of position as left back and a right midfielder. For me he’ll still be a Leicester player next season and I hope whoever we have in charge is able to bolster the squad so we can the best out of Maybury.

Patrick Kisnorbo:

I screamed for this bloke to be played as a defender after watching his display against Derby at Pride Park last season, when a lot of fans were on his back after the poor performances he’d put in centre midfield. A definite keep for next season and I’d make the guy captain as well.

Darren Kenton:

Not really given is chance since returning to the club. I thought he’d be okay but was never quite sure where Rob Kelly intended to play him and I think that has shown throughout the season. Kenton has some qualities as a full back that our others don’t, speed being one. He just looks a little reluctant to use it sometimes, I feel like he hasn’t got the confidence to carry the ball forwards and go past the midfielder. I personally don’t think he’s proved he’s capable of playing as a centre back at this level so for me he’s a back up full back, (rightback?) at best.

Patrick McCarthy:

Maybe a little controversial with this one but I personally do not think he is good enough to be considered a first team player based upon this seasons performances. I’d also have reservations about him being my captain. He showed more promise when he arrived than what he has shown this season. This could also be said about some of our other squad players to though. At which point you’ve got to point the finger at the coaching set up and ask is it motivation? Lack of fitness? Or even just match practice? Next season is a big season for Paddy as if he does not make an impact he will start to become a fringe player at the club.

Stephen Hughes:

I fear he is to lightweight for this division and has actually looked better against teams that have given him more time on the ball. I think the step up to the Premier league would actually complement Hughes well and he’d look a better player. Many Rangers fans told me he’d be a great signing for us when he join and they were some were unhappy he’d been sold. I’d have question marks over where to play the guy long term within our current set up. I personally think his best position would be as an advanced midfielder due to his inability to tackle but the bloke can shoot. I’d keep his for now but for me he isn’t rounded enough as a player to feature as a regular. This division requires rugged central midfields and ours is non-existent because of players like Hughes. The game just passes him by.

Iain Hume:

Okay, controversial with my opinion on Hume.

Technically I can’t fault the bloke, work rate I can’t fault the bloke but he is always out of position. This may just be to the inadequacies of our midfield but he wants to chase everything and get involved with everything. Last week in the game against QPR he was trying to win the flick on headers instead of Horsefield. Surely this should be the other way around. He isn’t the greatest goal scorer either so you ask why is he even playing up front. I’d stick him right midfield and let him attack from there personally. At least it’d allow him to get involved without sacrificing our shape to much.

Mark Yeates (on loan from Spurs)

A bit hit and miss from what I’ve seen. I can’t really comment much further, I don’t think he’ll make it as a Spurs player.

Mark De Vries (on loan to Den Haag)

When you play the ball to De Vries on the ground he’s okay. His goals/per game ratio wasn’t as bad as some of our current strikers. We just player the wrong style of football for his game. Despite his size he’s nothing short of useless in the air. One thing I always appreciated about De Vries though, he always looked shattered after a game. You could never fault the blokes workrate. He should never be chasing long balls though. Ball to feet lads, ball to feet…simple football suites De Vries. Shame he’ll be going in the summer, for me he’s more than capable as a goal scorer in this division.

Geoff Horsfield (on loan from Sheff U)

A few Leeds fans said to me “he’ll start well then steadily get worseâ€Â. Well they weren’t wrong there were they! He doesn’t work well with Hume. I often feel the strike partnership is the wrong way around. He will not become a permanent signing for us.

Andy Johnson

I was generally happy when we signed Johnson. I thought he’d add the bite in midfield we’d lost with Joeys departure. We’ve seen glimpses of what he was maybe like 5 years ago but I think he’s over the hill to be considered a candidate for a midfield position next year. He’ll depart the club with Rob Kelly and a few others in the summer.

Danny Tiatto

Danny wants to be involved in everything and he lacks all positional sense and goes looking for the ball because he gets frustrated because he hasn’t got it. His discipline record is nothing short of atrocious but he’ll gives you 100%. I’d have played him centre midfield this year with Wesolowski. The pair would have given us the much need bite we’ve been missing. Shame he’s going but I’m sure in the long run its for the best.

Matt Fryatt

Last season he proved that he was capable of scoring goals. I was hopeful that his partnership with Hume would continue into this season but it’s never got of the ground. Fryatt didn’t have a pre season and the fact we haven’t even got a reserve team has made the matter worse, not just for Fryatt but for the rest of the squad as they are unable to get match fitness. I hope he’ll be back today and I hope he can stay injury free for a while as he is more than capable of scoring us the goals that we’ve missed this year. I don’t think he’s a Premiership striker though, maybe more of a back up. So I’m hoping we sign someone more consistent for our next campaign.

Paul Henderson

Henderson has really surprised me this season. He’s come on leaps and bounds. He’s established himself as out number one kepper and I see no reason to change that next season. For me a candidate for player for the season. If you do get the award Paul, just don’t drop the trophy like Kevin Poole did.

Gareth McAuley

A candidate for player of the season. McAuley has really impressed me as a defender but for now I’d be tempted to stick him up front for the remainder of the season and play him alongside Hume. He’s brilliant in the air and that’s just the sort of defender that is required in this division. I think he’d struggle with the more technical game in the Premier league.

Nils-Eric Johansson

Our best defender, if he had any speed he’s be Premiership class. He reads a game well and you can tell he’s experienced. The most consistent player we have really. I’m surprised Bayern Munich let him go….okay maybe a little OTT there. No on the serious side he’s a good player, sold and I’d like him to stay. I’m pretty sure he’s yet to sign a contract extension and his contract expires in June doesn’t it? Maybe someone can just confirm this?

Shaun Newton (on loan from West Ham)

Will go back to West Ham….hopefully. I didn’t see the point in signing another winger and I’m still waiting for someone to give me a valid reason for this. For the sake of ten games he isn’t that much better than the one’s we already have.

Richard Stearman

Stearman has turn into a utility player. He reminds me of Phil Jakielka at Sheffield United. Is a bit of a jack of all trades but master of non. He lacks the physique to play centre back, wanders off and goes to sleep at rightback, lacks top quality vision to be a centre mid and pace to be a winger. He does however grab the odd goal for us and does a job when called upon. He’ll improve with ag and very much part of the future at Leicster City.

Elvis Hammond

Headless and chicken must always feature in the same sentence as Elvis Hammond. I still think if we spent some time and effort on teaching him to cross he’d be an asset. Pace is a deadly thing and he has it in abundance. He’s make a good right winger…..if he could cross. If not get rid of him.

James Wesolowski

I thought James might be the savoir of our football club when Joey left. He’s the perfect holding player and I’d have played him and Tiatto in centre midfield this season to add the bite. Wesolowski, like his mate Stearman will get better as they get older. Very much part of the setup of the new Leicester City.

Jason Jarrett (on loan from Preston)

I’m a little undecided on Jarrett. I ask myself why is he no longer at Wigan, why isn’t he playing for Preston? Then we witness a first half performance like the display at Leeds, then we watch in horror the display shown against QPR. He’s to inconsistent for my likeing, he’s like Junior Lewis, if you squint a little he even looks like him. A box to box midfielder definitely, loads of energy, I’m just not convinced he’s the answer going forwards.

Conrad Logan

Number two keeper for me. Look assured when called upon, a little over the top with his kicking. I didn’t think he’d ever play for the first team at Leicester but he’s come in and surprised me. Only time will tell if he can progress and become a good standard keeper for our club.

Louis Dodds (on loan to Rochdale)

Rob Kelly tells us he’s the best finisher at the club, we lack goals and he sends him out on loan??? I don’t get that. Give the lad a chance at least. He’ll go the same way as Tommy Wright and Chris O’Grady. Odhiambo and Chambers will go the same route as well. They are never given a chance to prove what they are capable of at first team level. They are given a game here and there (okay maybe not in Dodds case) but it takes a few games to get into it. He’ll depart the club and maybe come back to haunt us as we get knock out of the FA cup as we are beaten by Altringham Athletic with Dodds grabbing a Louis Dodds grabbing a hatrick. Saying that he can’t get in at Rochdale either.

Levi Porter

Player of the season? Maybe. The best thing to happen to the club this year really. I hope he maintains his form into next season and doesn’t disappear similar to Stearman this year.

Alan Sheehan

Never really given a chance in the first team so its hard to tell how he’ll get on. I’ve always called for his him to be given a chance in the first team (along with Thracian) but the Leicester coaching staff obviously don’t view him in the same light as I do.

Max Gradel

People tell me he’s the classic winger. Will run at people, score goals, fast, dribbles well. Why don’t we give him a try? Who knows…..over to you Rob Kelly?

Eric Odhiambo

I missed his cameo display against Villa in the cup but from what I’m told he was given the time to make any real impact.

Our club requires a shake up from the bottom up. We first need to lay the foundations with which to build our future success upon.

We need improved youth setup, improved scouting setup, a reserve team is a must for next year.

Milan Mandaric knows what he must do and he knows the task at hand. We all wish you good luck and we watch in anticipation as you shape our club, our dreams, into something that we can can only wish for.

Good post, I agree with pretty much all of that.

However, I don't really agree with this:

Norwich: Lose

Birmingham: Lose

Preston: Lose

Barnsley: Draw at best

Wolves: Lose

I think that's being overly pessimistic, yes they're tough fixtures but it seems we have a tendency to only turn up against the bigger teams and play poorly against the crap ones. In terms of recent games, look at how we played against West Brom compared to the shite we turned out against Leeds and QPR. I'm confident that we'll have enough to stay up in the end. :)

Agree with pretty much all of what Sly said in relation to our squad. Top analysis. :appl:

Though I have to disagree on his match predictions, even at this stage of the season and considering our less than poor form. I really can't see us losing 6 out of the last 8 games. Stoke is usually a good trip for us to make (so I'm told), and so I'd be fairly confident of us picking up a draw there. And as is normal with us, we raise our game against better sides (the 3 cup games, the recent game against WBA). Should make for an interesting run-in.

Nice post, and good assessment but these predictions are extremely pessimistic! :o

I know everythings not what how it should be at the moment but it isn't as bad as you make out there.

The two most winnable games look to be Norwich and Plymouth. If we can somehow cobble together 4 points from those two games, we'll be ok. I don't hold out much hope of getting anything from the other six matches.

Nice analysis from Sly there.

I agree with most of what was said by the original poster but one thing about a point about the kids like Dodds, you say that he will go the same way as COG and players like Tommy Wright which is a little unfair on the management regarding our young players. Loads have got through the academy and into the first team and there isnt a solitary player that I can think of that we have let go on the cheap and he has gone on to bigger and better things.

A few years ago it was players like Baraclough and then another England Youth Tommy Wright came along and he too has done sweet FA in recent years. COG was seen as one of the better kids and he came in and looked OK at times but most fans didnt think he was upto it and his transfer fee tells us a little something about his ability. Despite me wanting the likes of Gradel and King to get a look in at some stage and having a pop at RK for bringing in ropey loanees without giving them a go, I`d say that all in all this regime and others havent let one slip through the net. Its not like Birmingham who bought Clinton Morrison for a big fee and let Palace have a certain Andy Johnson as makeweight is it??!!

Someone kindly list the youngsters that have been let go and done really well???

Thank you everyone that has enjoyed my post. I just found it a more constructive way to vent my anger at our current situation and also point out why we are where we are.

Apexego you have a very valid point. The answer is no one. This then asks the question as to why this doesn't happen? We need to build the foundations for our club to stand upon and this must start with reviewing our long term asperations and installing better scouting, youth and coaching teams/policies.

Does anyone actually know if Johansson has extended his contract at the club though?

I was sat in Lloyds bar in Leicester last night and I was discussing the standard of our players with a mate of mine. We both came to the opinion that we mainly have a squad of good back up players. We really need to concentrate on improving the midfield and hopefully with the impending bosman of Todorov we might have a frequent goal scoring striker.

All in all - our back four is pretty solid, especially the two centre backs. The midfield is really a bag of wank, bar Porter. And we dont have a pure goal-scoring striker. Hume is more of second man.

Thankfully, no-one has slipped through the net yet but it may happen one day. I was just reading today that Billy Sharp, arguably worth £3-5m and looking amazing down at Scunny was actually let go by a decent judge in Neil Warnock at Sheff Utd a couple of years back. This season Warnock has gone and spent a couple of million on Jon Stead, another young forward who arguably isnt as gifted a player as Sharp.

The point is that players can show drastic improvements in a different environment and its almost impossible to know whether they would have actually improved had they stayed at the club.

All we must do is hope that the people in charge of our academy are able to influence these young lads to improve and that they get a fair crack at the whip in the first team if good enough.
