davieG Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 Through out history there have always been players that have excelled at club level but could never produce at international level - Lampard is one of them. The key to a good international manager is one that can spot that, even better if they can spot the apparently average club player who manages to excel at international level.
lookwhaticando Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 I think McLaren and Kelly must have qualified from same flawed coaching school. They did. The one Les 'ooooh look at me!' Reed wrote the book on.
lookwhaticando Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 I just watch because it's tradition Whats the FC about though? McClaren wanted to inspire a 'Club England' type of team - wanted to be more like a regular club than a national side. Hence 'England FC' as a bit of a laugh, I s'pose.
Leonisco Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 Fair play to Frank Lampard though. He doesn't need to fight for his place, he can just swagger about doing f**k all safe in the knowledge he will be picked again for the next game. Would have been nice to see Gerrard in the centre (where he always ends up anyway, doing the things Lampard can't manage) and Lennon in his proper position on the right from where he can actually put a decent ball or two per game in. I'm just glad I don't care as much about England as I do about Leicester. I don't agree with all this criticism of Lampard. No, he's certainly not played to the best of his ability, but he's being made an unfair scapegoat, probably by people who used to tease him for being fat and crap while he was at West Ham, and then when he went to Chelsea and started playing well they couldn't any more, and now they just want an excuse to start having a go at him again. Over the last few years, Lampard's always been there getting the goals from midfield just when we've needed them. Euro 2004, he was our second top scorer with 3 goals, including one against France which should have won us the game, and the extra-time equaliser against Portugal (remains one of my favourite ever England moments). Last night, he could've had a hat-trick from midfield, he just had one of those games in front of goal. If you're going to criticize him, then why not Gerrard, Rooney, Terry etc. None of them have played to their full potential for England recently, why should Lampard bear the brunt? He's done no worse than any of them in my opinion. Having said that, and this will probably sound like I'm totally contradicting myself, I would still drop him and move Gerrard into central midfield - but that would be for tactical reasons not because he's played particularly badly.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 If you're going to criticize him, then why not Gerrard, Rooney, Terry etc. None of them have played to their full potential for England recently, why should Lampard bear the brunt? Leonisco Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 Cos I think Gerrard, Rooney and Terry are better. I agree, those three are better players. But if they're performing at about the same level as Lampard at the moment, then that surely shows that they're further below their full potential than he is. Which is why I can't understand why Lampard gets all the stick. Plus they look like they care, which is always a winner with us gullible twats. That's a matter of opinion I suppose, but I didn't think they looked too bothered last night.
Bert Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 For a start they're not a club. The thing that gets me is, we know we have great players and we're good enough to be up there with the best just we get to complacent, thinking that we're already through. Then we have to rely on other teams to do our dirty work.
Joe. Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 McLaren is too much of a yes man. He will never change. We needed somebody who was totally disconnected from the Sven era. OK, for example: Lampard has been consistently putting in crap performances for England. Drop him? Oh no, Lampard is undroppable. He can do what he likes on the pitch, he could lie down in the same spot all game and still get selected for the next match. Jamie Carragher is easily better than Rio Ferdinand as a centre back. Ferdinand gets the ball and tries to play an amazing 60 yard pass which usually ends up at the feet of an opponent. Carragher will do his job, win the ball and give it to somebody who can pass. But McLaren hasn't got the balls to drop Ferdinand for a better player or anybody for that matter. Not including Beckham was just making a point to try and show he is not a yes man. Balls. How beckham does not even make the squad when people like Stewart Downing do is a complete joke. David James, another player who is consistently overlooked from the squad. Old he may be but why should that matter? In my opinion he is a better keeper than Paul Robinson. Rooney is hailed as our saviour but also can't perform on the international stage. We don't have the quality up front. Defoe, Johnson, Bent, none of them are good enough. I could go on further but I suspect I have already bored too much.
Bert Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 For Manager Surely, there should be a "Next England Manager Sweepstake"
Lineker's Left Foot Posted 25 March 2007 Author Posted 25 March 2007 sorry but that's just pathetic Well I'd never turn my back on City, but England can do one !!
Leonisco Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 David James, another player who is consistently overlooked from the squad. Old he may be but why should that matter? In my opinion he is a better keeper than Paul Robinson. Bollocks. Yes, he is a good goalkeeper in the Premiership, but as soon as he pulls on an England shirt he turns into a donkey.
potter3 Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 Bollocks. Yes, he is a good goalkeeper in the Premiership, but as soon as he pulls on an England shirt he turns into a donkey. People only say that because he made a few mistakes. He's a much better shot stopper than Robinson, if a bit unorthadox at times. I'm sure Robinson makes mistakes too. I vote Almunia to go in net.

A FEW mistakes!!??? He was an accident waiting to happen, we would have got much further in Euro 2004 if we'd had a decent keeper in goal. Robinson is way more consistent.
lookwhaticando Posted 25 March 2007 Posted 25 March 2007 Robinson is also not very good really. Foster or Almunia it must be.
Geo V Posted 26 March 2007 Posted 26 March 2007 They play with too much fear. I`d love some Brazilian coach to come in and just tell the players that unless they attempted to express themselves on the pitch by doing what they can do, including taking risks without the fear of losing possession, they`ll be dropped! Our players are all capable of doing the tricks and scoring the amazing goals but even the likes of Wayne Rooney and Stevie Gerrard look shite in an England shirt as they look like being either over eager (Gerrard and his 50 attempts at miracle passes) or scared (Rooney running back to defend all the time is hilarious). Take some gambles and express yourselves FFS!
Phube Posted 26 March 2007 Posted 26 March 2007 I'm so not bothered with the Andorra game I'm off to the cinema to watch '300'. At least they'll have some attacking manouvres!!
Durnerz Posted 26 March 2007 Posted 26 March 2007 A FEW mistakes!!??? He was an accident waiting to happen, we would have got much further in Euro 2004 if we'd had a decent keeper in goal. Robinson is way more consistent. David James actually had a good tournament in 2004. Robinson is steady enough for England, a lot was made of something that could happen to any goalkeeper in the world as it did to Robinson in Zagreb, other than that for me he's been a sound choice between the sticks, although Ben Foster looks like giving him decent competition. As for the team in general and McClaren etc its really a case of,as one paper put it having 'Sven Lite' having McClaren as manager, hes about as inspiring as a visit to the dentist and has the passion of a library. How the F.A thought the style of play and the motivation levels within the camp were going to change with Svens NUMBER TWO! as manager is beyond comprehension, McClaren was unpopular with Middlesbrough's supporters for his style and lack of tactical ability and to an extent, motivation also there, there were far better options avaliable. MON for one and who I honestly thought would get it, but seemingly the FA are happy to employ a dullard who won't say a word to them so they have it easy in effect and he takes all the flack. As for the team it was there for all to see where the problems lay on Saturday, because Frank Lampard rakes in the best part of £100k a week for his club seems to give him the right to be on the pitch for nothing other than a leisurely jog, Wayne Rooneys work rate on the pitch has dropped severley compared to when he used to come deep and have a run at players and the way he plays for Man Utd. For me, we need Joe cole back on the left, Lennon on the right providing pace, trickery and natural width, Someone to get the best out of Wayne Rooney, maybe the answer lies with an alternate strike partner, im not sure, but the fact is we need to get rid of a lot of deadwood around the National scene.
Leonisco Posted 26 March 2007 Posted 26 March 2007 David James actually had a good tournament in 2004. No he didn't. If you watch Zidane's last-minute free kick for France, James was completely flat-footed and out of position. I think a better keeper could well have saved that shot. Also, when Gerrard's back-pass fell short to Henry, he hesitated first and then came out, giving Henry more time to control it. Then when Henry tried to take it past him, instead of trying to grab the ball with his arms he just turned his head and slid out on his knees, a position in which he had no hope of getting the ball. Then, if you look at both Croatia's goals in the final group game, they both came from set-pieces into the box. He had no command of his area, that made the defence nervous, they didn't know what they were doing and Croatia got two goals from it. Now onto Portugal's late equaliser in the quarter-finals. When Postiga headed the ball, if you watch James he was completely flat-footed and didn't even attempt to stop the ball going in. He was shocking all the way through that tournament, but because none of his mistakes were glaringly obvious ones, like Robbo's in Croatia, no-one noticed.

lildave3 Posted 26 March 2007 Posted 26 March 2007 Never produced? three years ago Frank Lampard was the golden boy of English Football. Top scorer of our qualifying campaign was he not?
Manwell Pablo Posted 26 March 2007 Posted 26 March 2007 Top scorer of our qualifying campaign was he not? Indeed he was, and he won England player of the year 2004 I believe, short memories some people. When we were competing with the likes of france and whacking teams like Croatia and Switzerland 3-0 and 4-2 no one was saying Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard can't play in midfield togther. Lampard was again not great on Saturday but I thought he was better than Hargreaves or Gerrard he was just dropping two deep to recieve the ball, probabley because of Hargreves limited range of passing and the lack of space up top due to Isreal defending so deep. I almost have sympathy for McLaren he did lack options on Saturday due to our rather impressive injury list. We still should be beating Isreal though <_< We miss Paul Scholes badly.
