very interesting. 20 light years away, how long would it take to get there?

About 20 light years? :D

All the planet stuff is very intersting but spending all this money on trying to discover what else there is out there when we cant look after the planet and people in the one we live in is all very sad.

How long would it take what to get there?

It would take light 20 years.

How long it takes to get there really depends how fast of course you're going. A long long time though, is the answer

That is roughly 117,580,000,000,000 miles so even if you went at national speed it would take you around 69,988,095,238 days (around 191 million years) to get there assuming no stops.

i think its better we never try to get to super earth and leave us to rot on this earth we have created. DO you think they have made a better job of it than us? or are they already ahead of us and on their way?!

Don't worry with wifi and 3G phones, maybe we can picture message each other!!

We could be put into deep hibenation on the journey out there. The danger there is that we could arrive there and find the world have progressed further than us and destroyed the planet with a super-nuclear war. Whatever mankind does we are buggered. :fox:

Like Apexgeo said, its all well and good finding out information about different places, but what about our planet?

At the end of the day who gives a fu*k? If theres life out there, then theres life out there, if theres isnt, there isnt. I mean, whats the life going to be? Fu*king bacteria probably.

Who cares?!!

So if there is a Super Earth 50% bigger than ours does that mean the World Cup lasts longer? I feel sorry for them if they play cricket...

why don't they send four fertile couples on a ship make them have children, there children can have children with the others you see where i'm going, then each generation can be brought up being briefed of there mission by the older ones

or by some sort of live feed back from NASA.

A little off topic, but do you need to propel vessels in space, assuming it is on the right course? Because there is no friction etc to slow the craft down...

A lot of what we know about our own solar system, planet and therefore life on Earth came about thanks to the study of other planets in our solar system, as well as other solar systems.

It's not as unimportant as it seems.

I agree but do e really need to go looking at planets 20 lightyears away? Take it too far, know what im sayin?

While it sounds (and is, obviously) a long way away, it's still relevant subject matter.

Thanks to the expansion of the universe, things of interest are forever getting further away... so this planet may have formed in our near neighbourhood, but it's since moved a long way away. If this planet does indeed play host to 'life' - regardless of what form that life takes - it's a tremendous find. Although it probably has little impact on life here, it will confirm that life isn't exclusive to Earth.

That's big news. If life isn't exclusive to Earth, we would know it's not a case of luck that Earth is inhabitable/inhabited by life. Great understanding could be derived from this new planet if it hosts life - we might discover what conditions need to be met for life to exist on a planet.

It might not mean much to you or I, but to science, it's not insignificant news.

Sounds good in theory. You'd have to hope the offspring are spread more or less evenly in boy/girl ratio and none of the females are mingers. Otherwise the males may turn to their sistersfor reproduction purposes and that would not be good as there are enough Derby supporters without dumping them on to an unsuspecting New World.
