Forest eye Lennon as player/coach

Nottingham Forest are the favourites to sign former Celtic captain Neil Lennon, BBC Sport understands.

The League One side, who are managed by former Scotland international Colin Calderwood, are believed to want Lennon as their player/coach.

Lennon finished his seven-year Celtic career last weekend by lifting the Scottish Cup at Hampden.

But the 35-year-old former Northern Ireland international is expected to continue playing, his agent has said.

Neil's priority at the moment is to continue playing and I believe he has a lot still to offer in that capacity," revealed player's agent Martin Reilly.

Lennon enjoyed a colourful career in Scotland since Martin O'Neill signed him from Leicester City in December 2000 for £5.75m.

During his six-and-half years at the club the Northern Irishman won five Scottish Premier League titles, four Scottish Cups and two CIS Cups.

Forrest!?!? :dunno:

That makes no sense... when Sunderland are after you and Kean would probably be happy to employ Lennon both on the pitch and within the coaching set up, Lennon opts for the third tier of english football... nope 'that dog dont hunt"

If Keane wants Lennon as a player I don't see he'd be likely to want him as a coach as well.

Mixing the two is not easy any more than mixing coaching and managing. Lennon would need to work hard enough to stay fit as it is without being burdened with other responsibilities.

If Lennon wants to keep playing that's what he should focus on. Coaching opportunities will come along in their own time.

I can see that, but then again Speed at Bolton now has a playing/coaching role as he's getting on a bit... could not Lennon fulfill a similar duel role? :dunno:

He could. I just don't think it would work. Time will tell, doubtless.

No way :dunno: This is a lie! It has to be! Why would he go there if he loved Leicester? Also, i'm sure a couple of Premiership club and a host of championship clubs are interested?

Neil Lennon is poised to become player/coach at the City Ground according to reports on Thursday evening.

The veteran former Leicester City midfielder is leaving Celtic this summer but wants to continue his playing career as well as making the move into coaching.

Is a crappy unnoficial forest site so doubt there is much truth in the story. Surely Sunderland, Fulham, Leicester are more inviting places than league one outfit forest.

Tbh it doesn't surprise me... I can't imagine Lennon not going to Forest just because we don't want him to, no matter how much he enjoyed his time here. He doesn't seem like the kinda guy that worries what others think.

He won't. Lennon was the lynchpin for us in his time here and held things together in the midfield. That was plain to see when he left and we went to pieces. Jobs are very difficult to find in football and he'd be doing well to start at a place like Forest. Its not like we're playing them next season anyway is it. They still have an idiot in Calderwood in charge and he'll be calling the shots.

Times change, it's a good opportunity for him if there's truth behind it. One would expect Forest to push for promotion so he could be settled in a Championship Management role in a year or so's time. I wouldn't despise him for making the move, although I still think he could play for a year in the prem, certainly the championship. If he does go to forest I think that would indicate that coaching is now clearly his priority over playing

Lennon, who ended his seven-year stint at Celtic last weekend, is currently without a club for next season but admitted he was "speaking to a few clubs".

And he failed to rule out a return to City, saying: "I'm keeping my options open."

:D

You can't believe it's been 7 years can you, where has it gone?, bar one season we've actually been naff for nigh-on 3 quarters of a decade!!

Would be a fantastic signing for them if they manage to get hold of him. Maybe the coaching role will sway him into making this move.

But still, I'm sure other clubs will be interested in him and a higher level of football surely has to appeal to him more?

Oh well if he wants to go there he can, he is way past his best anyway.

Agreed.

Shame it has to be Forest though.
