philmltky Posted 9 June 2007 Posted 9 June 2007 Sorry to tell you guys but Martin Allen is doing exactly what he did last year with us. A few crowd pleasing transfers out, "Martins Updates" on the OS etc. Wait till you see him on the touchline with his backroom staff, he's truly inspirational. Unfortunately after about 4 months you'll realise that he isn't actually very good at managing a football team. You'll start hanging on to 1-0 leads before chucking them away in the last 10 minutes, the term "hoofball" will be the constant topic of conversation on the message boards, and god help you if you get to the playoffs. One tip if he comes out with something like " I sat outside the stadium in my car with a tear in my eye thinking about the year ahead" towards the end of the season, he's off!! A Brentford fan came onto our forum and told us all this a year ago and we didn't believe him either. Good luck, you'll need it.
Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 9 June 2007 Posted 9 June 2007 His overall record counts for nothing then??! I mean games played to won ratio, I read it was very very impressive when he emerged as a candidate

I mean games played to won ratio, I read it was very very impressive when he emerged as a candidate Yep, too true. Don't get me wrong, I chanted his name as loud as anyone. However, if you look at the record a different way (and with hindsight for those of us who are fans of clubs he's managed) it's never been good enough to actually achieve anything. From how he's acting so far it doesn't look like things will be any different for you guys
The Reverend Posted 9 June 2007 Posted 9 June 2007 With respect though mate, we are no Brentford or MK Dons. Allen clearly has a budget to bring quality players in, which he never had at either of the two you mention. And that is how you judge a good manager. Besides, who doesnt play hoofball in the lower leagues? Its almost a necessity.
Simi Posted 9 June 2007 Posted 9 June 2007 er...that's my point I know it was, but I didn't think mat_j101 undetood that.

Any manager would find it hard not to do well with Milan Mandaric and Don McKay helping him. With a big budget to spend. To do well in the lower leagues, you have to hoof the ball forward.

Tbh I've been really encouraged by Allen so far and no opposing fans views are going to change that, especially when their views seem to be as mixed as Alan Sugar's and Terry Venables

Interesting you should say that - most on here are convinced that Kelly was awful yet he was never given that chance...
The Reverend Posted 9 June 2007 Posted 9 June 2007 Interesting you should say that - most on here are convinced that Kelly was awful yet he was never given that chance... Yeah i agree totally but it was never an option anyway. Besides, the bloke never wanted to be manager anyway he was a coach so perhaps thats why he was never given any significant investment?
Jonbluefox9 Posted 9 June 2007 Posted 9 June 2007 Allen's at a different club now, as people have said already in this thread. He's at Leicester City Football Club. He's not managing League One and Two players (although some of the players that he has put on the transfer list so far could've passed for players of that standard on a regular basis last season). As he said in his press conference, he feels that managing players gets easier the higher you go in football and I can see where's he's coming from. Players like N'Gotty have been there and done it at the top level, he'll be easy to manage because he'll have the desire to get back to the Premiership without needing MA on his back. When you're a Championship player the motivation should be easy, you're one step away from the Premiership and that's where every footballer wants to be. He's got all the support he could want here, everyone pulling in the same direction, and I think this will enable him to be a success here.
DB11 Posted 10 June 2007 Posted 10 June 2007 Nor Brentford or MK Dons had Milan Mandaric as their chairman

You may well be proved correct and only time will tell if Allen is a leopard who cannot change his spots or a lion waiting to escape the reservation and get his hands on some quality meat that he can turn into a decent meal. And that must be the worst analogy ever posted on Foxestalk.
Stevosevic Posted 10 June 2007 Posted 10 June 2007 Both Brentford and MK Dons had several clubs he could move to that would be considered a step up. Who would he go to that would be a step up from us? No club in the premiership is going to want him.
mat_j101 Posted 10 June 2007 Posted 10 June 2007 I know it was, but I didn't think mat_j101 undetood that. I understood it, but im just saying that he must have done something right just to get into the playoffs in the first place, even if they did then lose

Lillehamring Posted 10 June 2007 Posted 10 June 2007 er...that's my point losing in the payoffs would be a hell of a lot better than the relegation battles weæve had for the last half a decade - i'd take a day out at wembley right now if it were offered...

dandannieldanok Posted 10 June 2007 Posted 10 June 2007 we are no Mk Dons n Brentford anyway ..and to be honest teams like you are awful and have no money to work with ...lcfc are totally opposite Shut up, we could easily have been in the same division as MK Dons this season so why call them awful? Anyway, we have hardly splashed the cash yet.
city1993 Posted 10 June 2007 Posted 10 June 2007 M K dons and Brentford are both little teams who had no right to be in the play-offs anyway, so you should all be very grateful to what Allen did for you. He's been a miracle worker at both clubs and gets no thanks for it, just give him a chance, the season hasn't even started yet, crikey !!
MBK Posted 10 June 2007 Posted 10 June 2007 He changed relegation contenders...and that means consistency suffers. Happens to any upcoming manager eager to prove his worth with a team in trouble. The issue remains results wise a top 6 result at the end of the season would be a respectable result, probably more to it and if MA gets the players to perform that's an excellent achievement, especially if most of them recover valuation wise i.e. Stearman back to a million etc. The difference to MKdons is not only money because the chairman seems to have been generous with him in that aspect but the infrastructure MM is setting up making a wider catchment area of player pool available to MA. To be honest, I would expect another two (very good) signings to finish off this summer's spending, with another 2 players heading out in addition to the ones on TL. Giving MA a chance to assess players including the reserve team over 20 games and inclusion of another 4-5 players during January.
