Steven Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 Ian Dowie, Alan Curbishley, Sam Allardyce, Harry Redknapp 65171 Harry Redknapp??? None of these managers have really dealt with and managed high profile players like in the England squad, believe it or not its alot easier to manager a group of avaerage players than to motivate and get the best out of big name stars! Sven is better than all mentioned so anymore? 65176 Do you mean pander to their egos. I think Sven encourages it and that is part of the problem. What is worse, Sven will only pick players from a small group of Clubs on the whole. <_<
Muz Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 Harry Redknappp at West Ham managed Rio Ferdinand , Jemaine Defoe. Although he would not be my choice he is 10 times better then Sven

Craig Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 Sven couldn't motivate a bunch of schoolkids to go outside for playtime. He's shit.
shen Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 Bobby Robson? 65181 He's had his time...besides that's hardly looking forward to the future is it?
Oli Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 I'd rather have Chandler as manager then Sven. 65184 Same.
Steven Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 I'd rather have Chandler as manager than Sven. 65184 Now you're being silly.
Mark Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 I dont think he should go, the friendlies are shockingly bad but we haven't lost a qualifying game, how can you sack him when his record speaks for itself. Anyway, just take a look at who the F.A. admire, who they desperately wanted back to manage the U-21's again, who gave him the full England job for 1 game when they were searching for another manager. Sven > Peter Taylor
BartonFox Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 Sven is clearly taking the piss out of the English FA, media and the fans. After the way the FA and media tried unsuccessfully to get him out why should he give a monkey's about the team? For 4 million a year ( ) he is sitting back and lapping it up which, in turn is taking the piss out of the fans . Couple to that that he is negative and niave in his tactics and his inability to drop the 'big names' then England will never go on and win any major tournament. Sven should have been fired after Euro 2004 when his ineptness was highlighted once again. To harp on about his competitive record is fine, but the vast majority of those games are against the likes of Albania, Azerbijan etc... When it matters he is mince. The media in England are a joke they build the team up to being the best in the world in the lead up to any game, then the team perform to their actual level, and then the media go off on one. England are a collection of 3 very good players (Gerard, Lampard & Rooney) with the bulk being good to reasonable, but they are no world beaters by any stretch. It's 5 years since Man United won the Champions League and no English team has come close since. The Uefa Cup doesn't fair much better, so until people realise that English footballers are not the best in the world people will continue to be disappointed.

I know Brazil are a top class side but once Ronaldinho was sent off we should have capitalised. Brazil do not exactly have a top class defence and we should have exploited this.

Ricey Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 Sven is a good manager but I can't see England progressing much further with him in charge. I want a English manager to be in charge but quite simply there isn't a English manager in the game currently who is good enough. This whole thing of "England should be the best team in Europe" is utter nonsense. The level we are currently at is the level we have been for decades, yes we could do better we have no divine right to do so.
toonboy Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 i dont think sven should go. he has never lost a qualifier and only to brazil, france and portugal in competitive matches. the friendlies are a joke but you have to come to expect that. some of his tatics are poor but he isnt a crap manager. we all like to think we are good managers after we have played footy manager but its not an easy job. if the FA did appoint Mclaren or any other English manager would we all be calling for their heads after we drew a few friendlies? any England manager will have critics unless he wins every match 5-0 but it isnt going to happen. of course he his going to take £4 million a year to do the job, im sure he would take £4 million a week if he could but who wouldn't.

You might well be right that he is taking the piss, the good ol' Sven. I know I'm going to sound biased (yet again) but just take a closer look at Sven's record. I don't quite agree with your 3rd and 4th paragraphs. He turned your qualification for the 2002 World Cup around completely for you after you looked doomed to a play-off place at best. Need I remind you of the opposition you thrashed? You then go on to lose to Brazil in the quarters where luck was arguably against you, and yes, the mentality of the players after Ronaldinho's red card was baffling. It was virtually Sven's only mistake 'til then. You then go on and consign Turkey (WC bronze medalists) to the play-offs in another good qualification and lose out to Portugal. To be fair, England were excellent against France and almost as good against Portugal and were unlucky not to pull it off. I'm not saying it's entertaining football, but the Italians have previously proven that it can work. The next year or so will show if the decision to keep hold of Sven was a bad decision or not, but surely the judgement is well early and inappropriate after this friendly against Holland He should stay on until May 2006 at least, as he has at least shown the ability to get you qualified directly I completely agree with your last 2 paragraphs though
foxesfan69 Posted 10 February 2005 Posted 10 February 2005 I believe the F.a. will give Sven until after the World Cup and see what he achieves. Anything less than the semis and he will be gone i think. YAY 200 POSTS!!!

If it wasn't for David Beckham (the last time he played a good game for either club or country) England would have been off to the Ukraine. 2-2 at home to Greece was not inspiring, the euphoria of the last minute goal seems to mask over the fact England were dire that day. I was at Hampden to Scotland scrape past Latvia 2-1 and we were out totally <_< Against Sweden if it hadn't been for Seaman it was game over, Argentina was a game of 2 poor teams won on a dodgy penalty. Nigeria waste of time, Denmark were awful but England did what was needed no arguement. Brazil was well we know about that. Not a great campaign really. Euro 2004 his tactical ineptness was brutally highlighted by France and Portugal both of whom were not that good. France are in decline while Portugal had already lost to Greece. Scolari was man enough to haul Figo, Sven couldn't or wouldn't haul Beckham or Owen, that said it all. On Wednesday the only players missing were the centre halfs and yet he still played a daft formation and the team were diabolical. He can't drop Beckham and until he does it will be to Englands detriment. SWP is a better right midfielder than Beckham so he can't play there. Beckham isn't anywhere close to Lampard or Gerrard so can't/shouldn't get in there either. Is he a better player than Stuart Downing, maybe, but he isn't a better left midfielder so he shouldn't be playing. What am I on about............. Sven must stay

Sven must stay 65444 Sorry didn't mean to insult you didn't imagine a Scot would be against Sven As you point out about 2002, I just don't think that England are superior to either Sweden or Argentina. Nigeria were well poor and Denmark were out of sorts. That they managed to get through in the last minute against Greece was obviously a bit lucky, although the Greeks were under quite a bit of pressure. But not many teams have been as consistent as England during qualifying these last 4 years. I can only really think of France who have also cruised through... Tbh, I think the games against France and Portugal were good examples of Englands ability to play well defensively. I put it down to them that France and Portugal looked rather poor. But I guess that's a case of personal opinion. Scolari's bold move to take off Figo was extraordinary though. Not many managers out there would've done it, but Scolari is famous for making such bold moves. I can't say I disagree with Beckham though. He's been nothing short of awful to average for a very long time. Sven's stubborness with Beckham is a flaw no doubt. And it took quite a lot to force out our own Emile, but I don't think persisting with Owen was a mistake though. Anyway... I do agree that he is far from perfect and he may well be past it, but I'll say it again. It's a results business, and as long as he gets them, he should stay ps. What a great idea by the Scottish FA to appoint Walter Smith
dan_84 Posted 11 February 2005 Posted 11 February 2005 God u lot are a #### joke! Sven is a good manager, it was friendly who gives a shit, AJ shudnt be in the first team neway, we should judge sven on matches that MATTER. he has a great record, who else would we bring in? The team in the first half was spot on except for terry and ferdinand, he is a good manager and a stupid friendly against holland who were shit neway doesnt mean he shud go. u make me laugh. I agree, if someone had said before the game, is this friendly worthwhile? the majority of people would have said no it wasnt, and now just because we drew with Holland people are saying SVEN OUT. its ridiculas that a manager that has only lost 3 competative games, 1 being on Penalties. is having his head called for. I think Sven has done an excellent job and hope he carries on doing it!
BartonFox Posted 11 February 2005 Posted 11 February 2005 ps. What a great idea by the Scottish FA to appoint Walter Smith 65491 Don't get me started on that <_<
