Fez of Mahrez Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Shaping up very nicely indeed down at Sixfields for the season ahead. Have signed some quality (midfielder Giles Coke from Mansfield today adding to midfielder/forward Ian Henderson from Norwich, striker Colin Larkin from Chesterfield and left-back Danny Jackman from Gillingham) and managed to keep hold of Jason Crowe (one of their best players, pacy right-back who used to play for Portsmouth) despite heavy interest from Ipswich and Nottingham Forest. Add this to the decent form they showed at the end of last season when Stuart Gray took over and placed his faith in youngsters like Bradley Johnson (a very decent player who will have a good career in the second tier in my opinion) and Ryan Gilligan in midfield. Also a very solid looking backline now of Crowe, Jackman and Mark Hughes alongside Chris Doig at centre-back. They've also managed to keep hold of one of the best goalkeepers in the division, Mark Bunn. Sam Aiston is a decent player at League One level in midfield and they'll be looking to get the best out of Joe Burnell returning from long-term injury. The strikers are less certain. Andy Kirk misfired badly last season and James Quinn isn't up to it. A lot depends on whether Larkin can recapture some of his early promise. A couple more strikers are on their way and I have a feeling they could be one of the division's surprise packages for the top six, particularly if they can manage to bring back Simon Cox, a striker they had on loan from Reading at the end of last season who scored some important goals and looked like a very lively player with a decent finish.
escape2victory Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Year I hope they do well. Got the potential to be a half decent Championship team, in terms of city size and population etc, and with the Saints being relegated, maybe the footy will get more interest from the Northants folk, even though it still is and probably always will be a rugby town. Whats happening to the Sixfields redevelopment ? I can remember a few years ago they wanted to extend it, but nothing seems to be happening these days.
Ric Flair Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Giles Coke is a good little player. I thought a Championship club might take a punt on him.

Giles Coke is an interesting one, suppose to be one of League Twos most promising players for the last two years but suffers from very inconsistant form. Larkin is another one that been around League Two for a few years and I don't know if he's League One standerd. they may improve on last season but I heavily doubt they'll be getting promoted with that team.
chili_con_carne Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 I once saw them lose 5-0 to Darlington at Sixfields.
The People's Hero Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Kirk will come good next season... surely? He really did go off the boil in a big way - but he's got the stones.

The Cobblers have the potential to self-destruct on a cyclical basis, financially in the main - and regular crowds above 6,000 are always going to be a push for them. I've never understood how a club can painfully enter administration only to repeat all the events that led to the problem over again. And then again.

Thracian Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 I once saw them lose 5-0 to Darlington at Sixfields. I remember them losing 6 to George Best!
The People's Hero Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Danny Jackman from Gillingham is a good capture. Occasionally dodgy at the back, but handy on the ball and has a wicked shot on him.
Manwell Pablo Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 I remember them losing 6 to George Best! Ha, I've been told about that, wasn't that one of his first games? And didn't they set up a complex plan to man mark Bobby Charlton and told their defense to worry about him and not George Best, Best then procceded to tear them apart .

It's Northampton Town's proudest moment, getting ripped apart 8-2 by Manchester United. This really is a mediocre place.

The rise and fall through consecutive seasons, the relentless battles against relegation, Watford Gap service station? Nene College Northampton University College The University of Central Northampton in Northamptonshire? Only an hour from London? Mediocre?

Only an hour from London? Mediocre? You know it used to be University College Northampton, referred to by everyone as UCN. Then they changed it to the University of Northampton and sent round a memo to all staff saying that people were not to refer to it as the UN. Northampton is the only place I've ever known where the Tourist Information centre's main selling point is that it only takes an hour to get to more interesting places.

The People's Hero Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Erm... London? Leicester? You may have heard of them already to be honest. Not really much to see in Leicester either. I'm dragging Claire up to this gig she won't enjoy ( ! ) so I'm thinking perhaps do something else the day before/after. Any thoughts? What will you be up to anyway mate? Making a bit of a weekend of it?

Take her shopping in Milton Keynes on the Sunday. Northampton doesn't really do tourist attractions. Or attractions.

There was probably something useful in there about Milton Keynes which I could use to my advantage.

Daggers Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Miles of real British countryside, miles of things to do…Whether you decide to stay for a few days or longer, there is always lots on offer for every season, no matter your age or interests. Immerse yourself in the history of the region by visiting one of the majestic stately homes, gardens or castles. Tread where warriors battled at Naseby, meander along our historical waterways or feast your eyes on the renowned boot and shoe collection in Northampton; a much loved feature of our county - and just one of many fascinating museums. Enjoy fun with friends or family and plan a trip around one of our big annual events such as the Northampton Balloon Festival. Maybe you fancy some real fun? Why not use our almost state of the art railway station to visit London or travel North to see some real poor people with flat caps? Oh yes, Northampton is brilliant.
Tevez Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 After watching Northampton Town play Forest, i thought they were a side that never gave up. I was pretty impressed, with Kenny 'The Good Doctor' Deuchar, he was OK, but his shooting wasnt that good. There fans get behind them a great deal, i can recall when ever Northampton was on the attack and it went for a throw in, the crowd went mental. Brilliant. As for the keeper, Bunn is it? He pulled some quality saves that game, I also Jason Crowe is a decent right back and Northampton have done well to keep him, i think a few weeks after he scored a wonder goal. I always look for Northampton on the results when i get back home from city. Cobblers!
Chairman of the Bored Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Northampton? Anyone know what's happening at Roadmenders these days? The Soundhaus is acool and groovy venue too. Actually, it's shit.
