Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 Are deals going crazy again, this is a silly fee. Absolute madness in my opinion, Cardiff must be laughing, great deal for them... From teamtalk, Chopra, signed for £500,000 by the Bluebirds from Newcastle last summer, is to discuss personal terms with Black Cats manager Roy Keane. "I am sorry to see him go, everybody in the camp is," City manager Jones told the South Wales Echo. "But at the end of the day there is a price for every player. The money could go on to make us stronger. "This is good business for us and after all, we are in a business. "And for Michael it means Premiership football - we cannot stop him. We wish him all the best with Sunderland." Keane has been tracking a new source of goals all summer but has failed to persuade England internationals David Nugent and Alan Smith to move to Wearside. Now he has turned his attentions to Chopra, who weighed in with 22 league goals for the Bluebirds in 2006/7. City's promotion challenge faded midway through the season, just as the Sunderland charge began, despite Chopra's net-bulging exploits. Two of his strikes came in front of Keane at the Stadium of Light in a 2-1 Cardiff win in late October. And after just one season in Wales, Chopra is set to return to his native north-east, with Sunderland's bid apparently triggering a release clause in the improved contract the 23-year signed in April.
Geo V Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 SS Link http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=4...ike+Chopra+deal Crazy stuff for a decent player but nothing more IMO.
Nationwider Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 Overpriced. I'd be surprised if he didn't grab the opportunity though. As an ex-Mag, it's an interesting choice. I think Quinn and Keane might be finding it harder than they thought to get a striker in.
Lovejoy Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 £4.5million profit for 1 season, Cardiff will be laughing all the way to the bank
Fez of Mahrez Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 Crazy as it is, this is the market price. It's not any worse as a price than Nugent at £6m or Bent at £16.5m in my opinion. And £2m for Billy Sharp will look like good business after he's scored 20 goals this season and is rated in a similar bracket to the current Chopra and Nugent fees.
Tevez Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 As long as all the decent players are leaving, i.e Koumas, Kamara and Chopra. I'm not complaining.
Joe. Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 I like Chopra, and I think he's a good player. He absolutely ripped us apart at Ninian park last season, scoring a brilliant hat-trick. Like Fez says, £5 million odd is the going rate. If you want a good player you have to pay over the odds nowadays.
Maybes Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 Steep. But could be a good purchase. Not sure how he will get on in the prem though.
Master Fox Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 He's no Matty Fryatt. He was good in training last week.
Dr The Singh Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 He's no Matty Fryatt. He was good in training last week. So was De Vries....what you trying to say MF!!!
Master Fox Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 So was De Vries....what you trying to say MF!!! What I'm trying to say is that because Fryatt and De Vries were good in training they should both start up front for us next season. We should not even consider selling either of these two players now, regardless of how much money we're offered. If they're good in training this means we're pretty much sorted for strikers next season, so why on earth would we need players like Fowler and DJ is quite ridiculous. Where's that emotion Dannyboy11 was on about???
andyh1884 Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 "Being a Geordie it meant a lot to me to come to Sunderland and score twice" - Michael Chopra, October 31, 2006. I'm sure he'll be reminded of this comment over the coming weeks
lildave3 Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 I'm just glad these clubs are buying more players from the Championship and not getting bargain foreigners.
Gené and Tonic Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 One of the reasons why clubs like Arsenal wisely go abroad for players. 6mil for Nugent, 5mil for Chopra, 6mil for Kamara, 5.5mil for Koumas While back where people aren't crazy Podolski went to Bayern for 7mil 2 seasons ago
The Reverend Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 "Being a Geordie it meant a lot to me to come to Sunderland and score twice" - Michael Chopra, October 31, 2006. I'm sure he'll be reminded of this comment over the coming weeks Yeah i was wondering if he was actually a Geordie, im sure he will be reminded of that comment a few times! 5 million though, Christ. But i suppose when you look at Billy Sharp for 2+ milion, Chopras done it at a higher level, so probably about right.....
act smiley Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 Is this actually going through or is it just a case of having to go to talks because of the release clause? Not as absurd as some of the deals that have been going on, its at an inflated price true but then so is everything else. I've got a mate who's a Newcastle fan that lives in Cardiff, he'll be gutted by this if they finish the deal.

Eastwood for £1.5m is looking like the summer steal to me with the inflated prices out there so far for strikers like Nugent, Earnshaw, Kamara and now Chopra.
Simi Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 £5 Million . One good season in the Championship. It's sad to see really, the gap between Championhip and Prem gets bigger with these new TV deals.
act smiley Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 Eastwood for £1.5m is looking like the summer steal to me with the inflated prices out there so far for strikers like Nugent, Earnshaw, Kamara and now Chopra. I'd say Earnshaw is the bargain - £3.5m for a player who scored 18 goals despite time injured (from which he's made a full recovery), has scored a fair few at premiership level before, compared to Eastwood who has merely proved he's a good championship player.

Agree with you there, i'd even say he is the better player of the lot.
Tevez Posted 13 July 2007 Posted 13 July 2007 Chopra, what a waste of money. He can't cut it in the premiership.
