Blue Bob Posted 15 July 2007 Share Posted 15 July 2007 There have been a number of calls from members on this site that we should be spending millions on players. I am not so sure we should as our record at spending over a million hasnt been that brilliant. Below is a list of all the players we have spent more than a £million. I dont think there are that many who did really well for the club. 2000 - Ade Akinbiyi ........... £5,000,000 2000 - Gary Rowett ........... £3,000,000 1999 - Darren Eadie .......... £3,000,000 2000 - Matt Jones .............. £3,000,000 2001 - James Scowcroft ..... £3,000,000 1998 - Frank Sinclair ......... £2,000,000 1998 - Arnar Gunnlaugsson £2,000,000 2001 - Ian Walker ............. £2,000,000 1996 - Matt Elliott ............. £1,600,000 2000 - Callum Davidson .... £1,600,000 2001 - Dennis Wise ........... £1,600,000 1997 - Graham Fenton ....... £1,000,000 1998 - Andy Impey ........... £1,000,000 1999 - Tim Flowers ........... £1,000,000 2000 - Trevor Benjamin ..... £1,000,000 If we spend £2 million on DJ campbell will he become another expensive flop??? Matt Posted 15 July 2007 Share Posted 15 July 2007 2000 - Ade Akinbiyi ........... £5,000,000 - Had our pants down, the most embaressing transfer ever! 2000 - Gary Rowett ........... £3,000,000 - Expensive, not worth that much but wasn't too bad! 1999 - Darren Eadie .......... £3,000,000 - Expensive, again not worth that much, injury prone but when playing not that bad! 2000 - Matt Jones .............. £3,000,000 - Was good when he played, If it wasn't for his injury i'd say he was possibly worth that much. 2001 - James Scowcroft ..... £3,000,000 - Not worth that much, people slagging him off more than he deserved 1998 - Frank Sinclair ......... £2,000,000 - Not too bad, didn't realise we spent that much on him though! 1998 - Arnar Gunnlaugsson £2,000,000 - Super sub! But when your signing a player to sit on the bench, Expensive! 2001 - Ian Walker ............. £2,000,000 - Worth it. 1996 - Matt Elliott ............. £1,600,000 - Legend. 2000 - Callum Davidson .... £1,600,000 - Not bad, Not worth that much though. 2001 - Dennis Wise ........... £1,600,000 - Twat! Not even gonna bother! 1997 - Graham Fenton ....... £1,000,000 - Waste of money. 1998 - Andy Impey ........... £1,000,000 - Not the best, half that I may say it wouldn't have been too bad a deal. 1999 - Tim Flowers ........... £1,000,000 - Worth it. 2000 - Trevor Benjamin ..... £1,000,000 - Always tried, Wasn't that bad in our promotion season, never worth that much though! So on a whole we have overspent on alot of out previous Million pound+ players but they havn't all been that bad! Edit:- You also have to bear in mind who we let spend most of the money on most of those players too! I'm not saying Martin Allen will be any different because he has never had any money to spend to compare with...

Chairman of the Bored Posted 15 July 2007 Share Posted 15 July 2007 Different time / different place. No owner, new manager. Judge by results this season BUT we have to spend to compete effectively, so yes we do have to splash some cash.
Cheese Me Posted 15 July 2007 Share Posted 15 July 2007 Remember we were an established premiership side when we bought most of those players too so fees for the likes of Impey and Davidson, etc weren't that big for decent squad players for a top 10 team. Also we've signed some great players for not much less than a million - Izzett, Lennon, Savage, Guppy, etc

Bojimha Posted 16 July 2007 Share Posted 16 July 2007 You make a good point, at least 50% of them signings over a mill where not good signings. I loved Draper though and I had his name on my shirt that I got for Christmas off my mum and dad then he left 6 months later and I haven't had a player name on my shirt since! Kent Fox Posted 16 July 2007 Share Posted 16 July 2007 Despite what we paid for them, surely the real test of whether or not they were flops, is what we got for them when they (were) moved on?? If we got more for them, despite our own feelings, someone must have thought they were ok - take Paddy Mac, for example. I'd be interested to see that same table with the sale figure added. If anyone can be bothered..

Always thought Eadie was a good player when he wasn't injured. I remember when we played Arsenal in the Cup and won on penalties, I think Eadie played left back that day and had a blinder. Wooo... looking at the money we payed for some of them makes me feel Ill! Elliot is a Leicester legend & Eadie I thought was not bad but just injury prone. Tim flowers was good, but possibly 1million was abit too much to pay for an oldie. Was Rowett that bad? I don't remember. The rest were pretty poor. But we are not the only club to have expensive flops . I seem to remember Man U splashing out big cash for Veron. Even the best managers get it wrong sometimes!
