Phube Posted 29 July 2007 Posted 29 July 2007 Went to my 'local' the other day, my first time at night in a pub since July 1st. And I noticed something strange, no not the BO smell people now moan about or even the fact that you can smell evey type of alcohol on offer, all quite weird I'm sure. But my problem is the fact that all the smokers have migrated outside! What's wrong with this I hear you ask? Well it seems to have made beer gardens, especially in the smaller, less family friendly pubs, a bit of a no go area! Far be it from my to cast aspersions on people who choose to shorten their lives (and lung capacity) but far more 'not-nice' people smoke, therefore they all sit out side in the beer gardens making it intimidating for us 'nice' people to enjoy the sunshine. Whereas within the pub itself, well, it's now a really nice atmosphere where people drink, talk and generally get along without the need to accuse the fellow next to them of 'spilling their pint' or 'looking at their bird'! Secondly it's the outdoor café culture, especially in town, whereas it used to be nice to sit outside and have a sandwich or a coffee. Now you have to go inside to avoid coughing to death over your latté! Anyone else found this, or any other non-smoking realted issues? Or am I just being odd again!??

I just prefer pleasant company!!

If you can draw up a list of people who should not be allowed in pubs I suggest you pass it on to your local MP for further consideration and a vote. These people are going to be around whatever you do, just sit down have your drink pretend they aren't there, they're like animals of low intellegence at the end of the day Phube, they tend not to bite unless they are provoked.

Too true, my point is; in a pub they are usually spread all over the place and out side. Now the are all concentrated into one small area! But like I said the pub itself now seem really pleasant! To be honest in an outdoor beer garden the smoke is not enclosed like it would be in a pub. It goes up into the air. Not like in a pub where it'l just circulate & you just breath it in all the time. Personally the non-smoking is brilliant, keep you healthier & your clothes don't smell of smoke.

It's just a problem with the ban. Like the entrances to buildings being clogged up with smokers before going to work!! But this way if infinately more preferable to indoor smoking!!

Kent Fox Posted 30 July 2007 Posted 30 July 2007 Feckin' non-smokers are NEVER happy I think that now we that are killing ourselves are out of your way, banished to the soon-to-be cold and wet, should just get on with your own lives and find some other form of lower life to terrorise. Try binge drinkers or underage car thieves - they kill themselves and others (if they drive) Or anyone that regularly drinks over 2 pints a day - Bad cholestorol and liver failure are also killers. Eventually. Personally, I am a happy smoker - outside, in fresh air and away from you lot. And you'll still come outside and talk to us!

Back on topic I think the only reason I'll carry on smoking is so that I don't become a non-smoker. I don't drive but I don't moan constantly about breathing in the fumes from other peoples vehicles nor do I moan about satellite radiation or the hundreds of other risks imposed on us by modern living. When did we become so health obsessed anyway? Its not like leading an ultra-healthy life means that you won't die. Something will kill you and theres not much you can do about it. I would much rather be responsible for my own downfall and should I choose to quit I think I'll be a smoker who doesn't smoke. At the moment I am enjoying sitting outside enjoying the sunshine, cold beer and tobacco too much.

Well it is a possible risk at the moment but call me paranoid but it will eventually be proved. Remember how long it took to find out how dangerous cigarettes were? I think it'll be about same with phone radiation. As long as smokers are aware of where they blow their smoke outside, I can't see it being a problem. It's the ignorant ones who don't take notice of the way the wind blows it right into your face who annoy me. Agreed. I try and blow upwards if its crowded, especially if people are eating nearby. As long as people respect each other it shouldn't really be a problem.
