Recommended Posts

Posted

I've got a big job interview tomorrow. And frankly i'm bricking it. Having just completed my A Levels I've got an interview for an Accountancy Firm in Leicester for the position of Trainee AAT Accountant. If anyone has any interview advice or tips I would be greatful, or if anyone already works in a similar field to what im applying for. Thanks

Not that I've ever had a job interview, but the best tip I know of is to stay calm because if you're nervous it will show and then you will not look very good.

But I haven't got a clue as I've never had a job interview

Yeh staying calm is easily said and done, but when i've got 3 fooking people in front of me interviewing, the last thing I will be is calm! :D

OK, i'm pretty good at interviews, i have an ok success rate... and thing that i always take in with me is the knowledge that if you couldn't do the job, you wouldn't be there - so don't go in thinking you have to convince them that they should employ you (skillswise)...

i always go in with the mentality that they are simply assessing whether they want to work with you. it's almost like thinking: 'i have got this job, they're just checking to see if they like me'

i suppose this could still make people nervous, but i tend to just make sure i smile a lot, and that i am adequately amusing without appearing like a clown. just imagine that you are meeting a friend of a friend, and that you want to make a good impression on them.

oh, and make eye contact, sit up straight, and try to find something in common, if you get a city fan, that's half your interview over once you've talked about saturdays results...

hope this helps...

Yep thats fantastic thanks. I've also prepared 4/5 ques im going to ask at the end about the company im looking to be employed by. Apparently this is advisable as it shows you have used your initiative and actually be arsed to do a bit of research..

apparently, tho i always used to do that, and then they'd answer them during the interview! but you will get asked so it doesn't hurt to have a few, but also to have a good reply in case they've been answered, i had an interview on thursday, and couldn't think of any questions, but i said if anything came up, would it be ok to e.mail them... and they seemed impressed with them...

having said that, i also managed to wink at the interview woman when she was seeing me out.. now i wouldn't recommend this, but they are checking my references as we speak! :D

I've been told that if all the questions you've thought off have been answered, it works pretty well to say something along those lines at the end of the interview when they ask you if you've got any questions.

Also, always remember that they wouldn't be interviewing you, if they didn't think you could do the job.

My oldest son has his own chartered accountancy. Let it be known you have a big sense of team spirit, will always be willing to help out in a crisis and that you are relish the opportunity of keeping your skills up to date.

Although he has nothing but praise generally for his staff my son says the one thing that frustrates him is how reluctant they are to change.

Also have a word with your boss's personal secretary if you get the chance - she'll likely be the one to give you a coffee when you arrive.

If you can find out the boss's hobbies you may be able to score a bonus point or two and also mention any charity work/organising skills you might have.

Accountants are always being asked to get involved in these sort of things and anyone that can take some of the burden off others is likely to be welcomed.

If my son's firm is anything to go by they'll also have team-bonding days - days out ballooning, go-karting or paintballing etc. If your interview's at that sort of company let it be known that you're up for anything like that.

Oh yes and look like a happy, positive sort of person with a smart, easy-on-the eye dress sense. Dealing with clients is all about first impressions and building on the initial relationship. Clients don't want to be intimidated. They want to feel at ease and to have confidence in you.

I interview people for a living so I can help (hopefully)

Look the part you only get 1 chance to make a first impression

Be confident about yourself, have a can do attitude

Ask a few questions not too many as they don't want to hire Michael Parkinson

Good questions are about progression and seek examples and how they support you in getting other qualifications if you want to study more and progress.

Ask the interviewer about themselves, people love to talk about them selves and will like you for asking (don't ask stupid questions)

A good question would be how long have you worked here and what role did you start with, do you like working here, what are the other people like, what are the age ranges of those i will be working with.

If you get stuck then ask about where to eat and park etc

If you ask relevant questions then they will think you are interested and on the ball.

You mentioned about the company who are interviewing you. Find out key facts like when they were formed, what they do who they service.

Remember as a trainee they want someone who will be molded by them and not the finished article, appear open to their suggestions of their way of improving you.

Lastly make sure they impress you with what they say! You may impress them, but your services are not free (go in and know how much you want) (Trainee Accountant 12-18k Dependant on experiance If you have just finished A Levels and done well look for 15k IMO ) and there are plenty of jobs out there if this one is not for you!

Oh yeah common interests! Look around the room for a calendar or a hobby or if they wear a wrist band etc and that will start a non business conversation!

it really is a good tool, as it can eat up the time, i ended up talking about shakespeare with one woman for about half an hour, still not heard from that one, but by the end it felt like we'd jsut been out for a coffee...

at my last interview, tho, the woman asked me if i worked out - i was like - 'excuse me?' - she said it again, and i'm like, 'well, i haven't been in town long so...' and breathing in... but it turns out she just wanted to point out there was a gym in the same building, phew!

Use threatening language and insult how they look.

Dave, this is what you need to say as soon as you walk in.

Only if i'm going for a job as an abusive clown.

I think i'd be good at that.
